what does elevated enzymes in/on the liver mean??

Recommended Posts

Hi All-

I tried googling this but dont understand what it is. I had some blood work done and got my results this week. Elevated enzymes of the liver, type 2 diabetes, and anemia are at the top of this doctors list of concerns- nevermind the thyroid score of 4.2. I appreciate any info you guys have to offer. Thanks!

First, I would ask for a referal to an endocrinologist for the thyroid. The TSH should be 0.3-3.0.

For liver enzymes, my daughters' were off on certain meds and they had to change meds. I think that elevated liver enzymes could mean many different things---most of which I know very little about.

low thyroid function also decreases liver function so toxins are more likely to build up. (after eliminating possible causes, thyroid was all that was left for me.). at least that is my understanding as I also had a TSH of 4, with elevated liver enzymes (which were ALL over the place as I had several tests run).

yoga with twisting postures actually helps excrete toxins from the liver and I no longer take acetiminophen (read the warning lables - it can cause liver problems) at all. excedrin is the ONLY OTC that ever has helped my headaches, and I can't take it. oh, drink lots of water.

My husband used to get this reading every time he'd have his blood drawn for his life insurance physical. Then he'd go to his regular physician and the bloodwork would come back normal. We couldn't figure it out. Then it hit me that his ins physicals were always early on Saturday mornings when a nurse would come out to the house. Friday night is dh night to kick back with a few beers or glasses of wine, stay up way too late and play guitar or watch movies. Apparently the alcohol was throwing off the reading. Many things can affect it, so be sure to rule out the simple things first.

Thanks for the replies so far!

I have been a heavy pepsi drinker and sugar user for years..... I add this because I am curious if this has something to do with a liver issue. When I went in last week, we discussed some things and I have since quit pepsi and sugar. It has been hard because I hate water. But I have eliminated breads and pastas and rices, you get the picture. I also am walking 30minutes a day. And I have actually lost about 5 pounds so far! *happy dance* This dr made me pretty upset though cuz he said that changing my diet and exercise wont help at this point. And my sugar came back at 248- which I realize is terrible but its not like I am going to explode this very instant. Anyways.... Thanks for the input and I look forward to reading more. :001_smile:

Elevated liver enzymes can be caused by many different things. It depends on which enzyme(s) are elevated and how high they are. It's complicated and you will probably need more testing to figure out what is going on. :grouphug:

My liver enzymes also come up a little high. I don't drink, don't take alot of tylenol. I think my dr. was sick of me asking why and he finally told me it was because I was fat. :001_huh: He said it nicer, of course! :D Apparently there is fat around my liver and it makes my liver work harder thus increasing my liver enzymes.

i am an r.n. there are lots of things involved with the liver that could be making the enzymes elevated and not knowing your medical history--its hard to know where to start and explain. go back to your doc and have them explain everything to you. you probably have something already scheduled with your doc, right? in the meantime, the more you goggle the more you will become anxious with all the things you will find out that you probably do not have. go to sleep, and talk to doc in morning.

My DH got just his blood work results back at the end of last week and his liver enzymes were elevated too. The doctor didn't seemed worried about it....he said they were slightly elevated, but not enough for immediate alarm. I guess it was unusual though, since the doctor personally called instead of a nurse.

We researched it a bit and it could be anything from an infection, to fatty liver (which is usually harmless), to hepatitis, to liver cancer, it can stem from diabetes or autoimmune disorders, it can be caused by medications, or vitamin/herb usage. DH's doctor is leaning towards either an infection (DH was sick the day before), or fatty liver because he is overweight. It can also be from Tylenol use. Had you had Tylenol that day?

DH's doctor wants to retest him in 2 months. I wasn't happy with waiting two months, but I guess the levels were not high enough for him to be concerned.

You need to see an endocrinologist ASAP. Every bit of this could be related to the thyroid. Make an appointment with the specialist.

I have elevated liver enzymes... but I was in end stage liver failure last fall... and they have come down a lot (I am a miracle according to my doctors)... basically the liver is not working properly... which could be from many things... from too much tylenol to too much booze to a fatty liver to hereditary cirrohsis to certain medications.... and many other things, to boot. First off, you need to find out what exactly is elevated (like AST's or ASD's) and then ask for a full liver panel if you need more answers. When my liver was out of whack all those months, my blood sugars were very high... the liver causes the elevated sugars and not the other way around....

If you love your thyroid you won't go to an endocrindologist , but a naturopathic doctor , or one that works alongside an MD.

Endos do not know how to treat thyroids properly at all. They specialize in diabeties plain and simple.

Everything is off kilter because of your thyroid/ Actually normal thyroid levels should be 0.3 to 1.9 (which 1.9 is borderline).

Once you get your hormones in balance everything else will balance itself.

Be sure to find a good ND that will prescribe you Natural Thyroid HOrmone. Your body does not live off of T4 alone if your liver is not functioning properly. You can take as much as you want until your blue in the face and if your liver isn't filtering well then your body won't convert it to T3 which is the active hormone.

Stop by the Stop the Thyroid Madness website and read, read, read. I wished someone had shared this info with me many years ago. I don't think I'd be in such bad health as I am now. Its the best advice anyone can give you.

I am having to go to a different doctor- not only for a second opinion but for financial reasons. So, I have to get a referral to the specialist from the new doc. I dont see him/her until the 5th of August so.... both times I brought up the thyroid thing to the current dr, he acted like I was dumb. I seem to be getting the idea that drs dont want to acknowledge thyroid issues as being a cause for alot of medical problems? Correct me if Im wrong? Thanks everyone!

It does seem strange that doctors don't seem to know the importance of thyroid function. But, unfortunately, that seems to be exactly the case. You have to be your own advocate. Research thyroid function and know it inside and out for yourself because it is rare to find a medical professional that will. You have to know what to push for to get your health back.

Also instead of researching what high liver enzymes might be from, research what the liver does. It plays a big part in toxin removal and, if I remember correctly, is associated with hormones among other things. When you learn what all the liver does in your body, you will probably recognize ways that it could be stressed.

How high are the liver numbers? My DD has PSC (think Walter Patron). The doc tells use that the liver #'s need to be at least twice the normal levels before we should start to worry. Hers have been over 10 times normal before. If they are not twice normal it could be nothing. Some liver numbers are so variable that sneezing will cause them to be off.

My friend is seeing a naturopath and has had awesome results. I think I need to find one myself. He put her on a diet plan and she has lost weight and inches and hasnt even started exercising yet.

I have elevated liver enzymes, and for me it's ended up meaning autoimmune hepatitis along with possibly lupus or sjorgren's. The autoimmune hepatitis is quite rare, though--I've heard as low as only 17 out of 100,000. I'm also hypothyroid, but I've been hypothyroid for 7 years, and the liver issues didn't start until October of 2009.

The more common reasons for elevation are fatty liver and hepatitis A, B, and C. There are a lot of uncommon reasons, though--I think I was tested for all of them because my serology doesn't line up is AI.
