Alicia64
It's for co-op. I'll only have three days to read the book aloud, about an hour each time. So it can't be a long book. Also, the kids are 6 and 7. THANKS!! Alley
AudreyTN
Any particular subject?
Emilylou
Mr. Popper's Penguins~ My kids loved this one!
Chelli
I'm impressed you can get 6 and 7 year olds to sit still and listen for an hour to someone reading a book...:D That said...Charlotte's Web is a fav read aloud around here for that age group. Alicia64
No particular subject at all. It's just supposed to be "good literature." From there, we're free to choose whatever we want. A lot of the stuff I'd choose -- Charlotte's Web, Trumpet of the Swan, Little House, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins -- are all so long. I'm stumped. lexi
My kids really like My Father's Dragon or books by Cynthia Rylant or Dick King Smith.
Emilylou
How about one of the Ingri and Edgar D'Aulaire biographies? My kids these- lots to digest, large pictures but a good read. ???
Alicia64
Mr. Popper's Penguins~ My kids loved this one! Love this idea. We've read it too and it's short enough to really work! Thank you. Re: Cynthia Rylant. I love her. Which of hers are you thinking? Alley
Kidlit
Hmmmm. . . you could probably do a shortish chapter book in three hours. I'm thinking that the Charlotte's Web audiobook is at least that short. Maybe you could look up the audiobook versions of any chapter book you're considering and see how long the narrated version is. I agree with the pp who suggested the D'Aulaire biographies. They're long enough to seem substantial, but I don't think they'd last 3 hours (unless you did all of them). sweetfeet
Mr. Popper's Penguins~ My kids loved this one! That's what I was going to add. My daughter really enjoyed that book when she was 6. It's a fun read.
sandra in va
I would second My Father's Dragon - it is a little shorter. And so fun!
bethben
Winnie the Pooh - the chapters stand on their own so you can read as many or as little as you want. I LOVE Winnie the Pooh. My second son at that age would lol at parts and I just remembered today that I need to read it to son #3. Beth
PenKase
Winnie the Pooh (the original series. NOT DISNEY!!! Any of them/all of them will do. These are fantastic for a first all young and old) The Tale of Despreaux (My absolute favorite) The End of the Beginning (a really sweet quick read) A Cricket in Times Square (dd7 really liked this one) HTH
sewpeaceful
My kids really like My Father's Dragon or books by Cynthia Rylant or Dick King Smith. :iagree: Currently my kids are enamoured with Follow My Leader.
kkiller
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is also a big hit at our house!
yellowperch
http://www.amazon.com/Jamie-Angus-Stories-Anne-Fine/dp/0763633127/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299721673&sr=8-1 Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is also a great choice. The chapters stand alone so you don't have to finish the book if you run out of time. The first book is by far the best. Mr. Popper's Penguins and EB White books are great, but some of the children may already know them (not that hearing them more than once is a bad thing)
Disney Dreaming
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Follow My Leader, Gooney Bird Green, My Fathers Dragon....all of these are great! Also, Henry Huggins was a hit with dd.
Chris in VA
Oh, I know!! Fantastic Mr. Fox, by Roald Dahl! Unless it's a super conservative group.
jentancalann
I was also going to suggest My Father's Dragon. It's great, has cool pictures and is lots of fun!
crazyforlatin
Maybe The BFG by Roald Dahl. There's something exciting about a giant kidnapping a little girl....for kids of that age I mean.
Mommyfaithe
We love Little Pear by Eleanor Frances Lattimore. Sweet. Faithe
silliness7
My Father's Dragon Pippi Longstocking The Last Little Cat by Meindert DeJong The Hundred Dresses Happy Little Family by Rebecca Caudill
crazyforlatin
The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman. The chapters are short so it's easy to end it for the hour if you happen to be in the middle of a chapter. Besides that, it's funny and has enough adventure to keep them intrigued. Also, DD loved The Night Fairy by Laura Schlitz and it's short enough to finish within 3 hours.
