Update on DSS's academic situation

Recommended Posts

As you may recall, DSS did not graduate on time last June. He had the opportunity to get his 2010 diploma by doing an online psychology course (required for graduation) over the summer but he did not complete the course on time and therefore is only eligible for a 2011 diploma at this point. We decided that the best course of action would be for him to return to school for that class and take his second year of German, another year of English, and another year of Math (all required for college applications).

We met with the counselor and superintendant of his high school who informed us that due to budget cuts and high enrollment numbers, they were unable to enroll him for anything other than the psychology class. The guidance counselor discouraged us from looking into the local technical high school stating that they wouldn't want to take him either since he technically only needed one course.

Today we met with the superintendant and counselor or the technical school who welcomed him with open arms. Not only did they let him sign up for a full schedule but they informed us that their school district does not require psychology (which, given DSS's other issues, has not gone well for him). He can substitute Economics, History, or a handful of other online courses for the Psychology course he has floundered in. He will be allowed to go through the full year of his technical courses (allowing him to earn college credits) regardless of when he finishes the required course, or he can be finished with high school the moment he finishes the course. He could, potentially, finish this year with a year's worth of college credits under his belt. DSS was really happy with today's meeting. Honestly, I think this is the best possible plan given all of the extenuating circumstances in his life.

Thank you everyone. I'm so happy that the technical high school was so accommodating and that DS actually seems pleased with this plan for the year. Today I am filing the paperwork to change school districts so he can attend the technical high school. He goes into the school on Friday for orientation and will sign up for classes at that time. He is hoping to take a Construction Trade course as well as a PC Hardware and Robotics course. Otherwise there is an EMT/Firefighter course that sparked his interest. Classes start Monday.
