unsinkable
This is inspired by the "reading in the bathroom" debate. I get out hundreds of books a year from the library. The strangest things I ever found were hairs...dozens of hairs: dark, wavy hairs in between pages, throughout the entire book.:eek::eek: Gag, gag, gag. My imagination got away from my after about 30 pages and I almost vomited. The book was The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell. I returned it to the library and told the librarian, showed the librarian and she discarded it. Blech! http://www.bernardcornwell.net/index2.cfm?page=1&seriesid=4 unsinkable
OnTheBrink
I don't get it. Hair in food would gross me out, but hair in a book? And to throw it away? Is there a hair connection I'm missing somewhere? I mean, finding hairs would be weird, but I wouldn't toss the book over it. LOL
Lorna in the boonies
When we checked out one of the Lemony Snicket books, there were boogers on every page. Several of them. On every page.:( (Sorry, but you asked!)
Book Crazy
Shopping list... Electric Bill... The backing from a panty liner.... I didn't get much further in that book
Michelle T
I don't recall anything too strange, occasionally slips of paper or business cards. I have found odd things written in library books occasionally. MichelleT

Is there a hair connection I'm missing somewhere? I mean, finding hairs would be weird, but I wouldn't toss the book over it. LOL I guess it was the quantity of hair (3 or 4 pieces every couple pages) and the type of hair -- it was dark and wavy and it coulda been that kind of hair. I read in bed every night and the thought of that hair in my bed....shudder. unsinkable
KristineIN
One time dd checked out a book that we had checked out before (she checks out some stuff over and over) anyway, it had a library receipt from another book that I had checked out several months before. It also had someone else's library receipt in there, so I didn't feel to bad, but our receipts have our names on them and I wish they didn't. Kristine
Lisa in SC
I don't get it. Hair in food would gross me out, but hair in a book? And to throw it away? Is there a hair connection I'm missing somewhere? I mean, finding hairs would be weird, but I wouldn't toss the book over it. LOL Umm (trying to be delicate), I think the "dark, wavy" hairs was the clue. I could be wrong, but I think that the suspicion was that these had been located somewhere else on the body. EWWWW!! We've found used kleenexes (stuck to the page...yuck, yuck, ick), hard candy (already sucked on & also stuck to the page), and a bandaid (used...blech). Unicorn.
Gee, thanks! I WAS planning a trip to the library later. Not anymore! Me thinks I'll just go buy some books to read- TYVM! Unsinkable- I think you win for the grossest thing ever, followed closely by Book Crazy!
Guest Virginia Dawn
I found hundreds of 4 leaf clovers pressed in a copy of McGillicuddy McGotham (a book about a leprechaun). I had read the book as a child and spent many years as an adult scouring libraries and yard sales for the book. Finally, I found it in an "antique" store and purchased it right away. When I got home, I discovered it was full of 4 leaf clovers. It is a fond memory. :)
Baseballmom
A friend and I were shopping at Goodwill. She opened a book to skim it and found 5 $10 gift certificates to Cinemark Theatres. Man, I was wishing I had found that book first. Needless to say, she paid $1.00 for the book, just to get those gift certificates.
Jenny in Atl
Gosh, after working in bk stores for about 10 years, I think I have seen about every nasty thing you could find in a bk. Lovely items left by costumers who liked to look but not buy. We would lose at least a couple a year to, well how do I say this, the stuff that helps make babies (male contribution).. At least the kids kept it to sticky stuff, candy and soda. It always amazed me that someone would do that!

LOL I hadn't considered it being THAT kind of hair. Ick.
HomeOnTheRanch
I have a ton of library discards from a school where I used to work. About 4 years ago toddler dd pulled one off the shelf and tore the library pocket in the back. Inside of it were a b&w photo of 2 girls, an Oakland Free Library card from the 20s, and a book request form. I thought they were cool, but kind of sad to realize that the folks in the photo were probably dead. I still have the stuff. I'm not sure what to do with it, but I'm sure it has a history somewhere. I thought it was weird that this stuff was from Oakland, Calif. in a book I got in Michigan.
Excelsior! Academy
We usually just find library receipts. What is funny to me is they usually have just one book listed on them. I've never checked out just ONE book! 30 maybe, but one?!
BritAnnia
Aww, that's just precious! I'm thankful I've never found anything gross in any librarybooks or previously owned books. Library printouts are about the norm here. Phew! :)

I've never checked out just ONE book! 30 maybe, but one?! I know what you mean - I laugh when I see those. The librarians know us by sight now and like to tease us that they have to keep a whole shelf set aside for us and one other family because we order so many books! :D
Mamagistra
Nothing gross, but I always get a little misty to find a used book with a sweet inscription, such as: To Timmy, Love Grandmom and Popsie. :( I always come away feeling sad for the poor little abandoned book... Oh!...I do have a very humorous copy of the oop Latin Book One, containing much graffiti...stick figures jumping from the Colosseum and rhymes like: Latin is dead, as dead as can be. It killed the Romans and it's killing me. LOL :D

Chris in VA
but not because of me. We've just found receipts and notes and things. I was at our annual garage sale at church and I came across a fellow bible-study attendee's workbook from an old study. I returned it to her. We usually write our prayer requests for that group in the back of the book, but she had hers on a piece of paper left inside--it was kinda neat to see the names of the women who had attended, with their requests. One of the women had since died, and it was sad and yet wonderful to read her requests and remember how they were answered.
Guest Katia
I've only found two things in books: From the big city library I found an adorable picture of a little boy and it said "First Grade" on the back. I made up the story of a grandmother reading the book and using the picture as a bookmark so she would have the face of her 'baby' always in front of her... and she lost it. That made me so sad I wished I could have found her to return the picture. Then I purchased a book from a resale place (Cheaper By the Dozen) and at home found inside the mylar cover flap a newspaper article about the family with pictures, etc. What a find! I keep this in the book so that the next owner can enjoy it. Well, I think I'll hand the book down to my dd, and she will probably do the same, but somewhere down the road someone else will treasure that article as a "find" as well. :) :) :)
Plaid Dad
Probably the most disgusting thing I've ever found in a book was a used band-aid.
WTMindy
I once found a picture in a library book, and I knew the person. I thought it was coincidental!
Kareni
I once found three $5.00 bills inside a book at a thrift store. The funny thing is that I had just said to a friend with whom I was shopping, "I find a lot of money but never yet in a book"! She said that if we hadn't just walked in the store together, she would have thought it a set up. Regards, Kareni
Barb_
Considering the source, probably not strange but certainly appropriate for the thread. An Algebra II book, bought at Follett filled with detailed, gynecological drawings of the female anatomy. The boy was obviously failing Math.
