creekmom
I've always thought it was "homeschool", but I noticed that SWB writes it as 2 words- home schooling on her blog. :001_huh:
lisabees
I write it as one word, but my spell checker doesn't like that at all. I don't know which is correct!
Wildwood
I don't have that answer, curious too. I do love the pic of your kiddos on the beach though...too precious!:)
AngelaNYC
I write it as one word. The Catholic schools in my area have something called "Home School" which has something to do with communication, planning, and volunteering between parents and teachers. I feel that writing it as one word separates us homeschoolers from the home-school associations the schools sponsor.
tinkgumby
I've always written it as one word, even back when I was being homeschooled myself - spellcheck or not. :001_smile:
Ellie
Yes. :D I write it as one word, as well, but I have friends who will defend to the death writing it as two words.:D
patchfire
Most authoritative sources will call for two words - "home school." Another example would be "breast feeding." However, advocates generally don't want to be relegated to a mere adjective, so they create a compound word. I fall in the camp of compounding. So there, official rules! ;)
lovemykids
Yes, it’s our world and we say it’s one word, so therefore, it is! They are just going to have to change spell check and make a new dictionary entry one of these days.. :tongue_smilie:
Reya
I've always thought it was "homeschool", but I noticed that SWB writes it as 2 words- home schooling on her blog. :001_huh: Most often 2 by those who don't and 1 by those who do. ;-)
AnnetteB
Just to make a little trouble, I prefer to say we home educate our children or that the children are educated at home if anyone asks.
Ellie
Just to make a little trouble, I prefer to say we home educate our children or that the children are educated at home if anyone asks. I used to say "I teach them at home." I thought it sounded awkward to say that I "educated" them at home (which is what we were doing, of course). IsabelC
In my ideal world, homeschooling would be called education and institutionalized schooling would be called institutionalized schooling. :tongue_smilie: In the meantime, I prefer home-based education, since I don't actually lock my children in the house in order to turn them into antisocial freaks. ;)
ReneeK
I'll have to remember that " I home educate my kids" or "they are educated at home" but that still doesn't change the spellcheck driving me nuts. :D
Cornerstone Classical
I've always wondered this too. As a home educator, I want to spell what we are correctly.... But thanks to this thread, the wondering still goes on...:D
AnnetteB
I'll have to remember that " I home educate my kids" or "they are educated at home" but that still doesn't change the spellcheck driving me nuts. :D My email spellchecker is kept "off." It has a problem with several of our children's names and I shushed it. I know that you have the option of adding a spelling to the accepted spellchecker list. I believe that "homeschool" will end up an accepted spelling in modern dictionaries eventually. You can be a pioneer :D
coffeefreak
Most my spell checks let me add Homeschool to the dictionary. Have you tried that? :D
lauracolumbus
I read somewhere that it is supposed to be two words like high school, elementary school, etc. I think hyphenating is a nice compromise. Laura
Ellie
I read somewhere that it is supposed to be two words like high school, elementary school, etc. I think hyphenating is a nice compromise. But then there are words like homesteading, and homemaking. Homeschooling is a lifestyle, not just a different place to Do School. And I don't think anyone can say what it "should" be. :)
SonshineLearner
Me too!! I actually remember discussing this with my mom when we were publishing things about Homeschooling:-) We decided that it was one word.... 'Course... that was in Oklahoma:-) ...and 24+ yrs ago:-) Carrie
LadyAberlin
I was homeschooled and we always wrote it as 1 word. It wan't until the past couple of yrs I started hearing people question whether it was one word or 2. So anyway I've spelled it as 1 word for the last 21 yrs and I'm not changing:D
MerryAtHope
In my ideal world, homeschooling would be called education and institutionalized schooling would be called institutionalized schooling. :tongue_smilie: LOL! But then there are words like homesteading, and homemaking. Homeschooling is a lifestyle, not just a different place to Do School. Now there's a good counter argument to the one I usually hear--homeschool is two words because public school is two words. I'll remember this one! Merry :-)
angela in ohio
Words often evolve in this way: two words, then hyphenated, then compound. They evolve more quickly in informal use. So you will see "home school" often in more "official" capacities (in our library catalog, for example,) but homeschool in "insider" materials.
