Magic Eraser hasn't worked.

Smooth top stove cleaner hasn't worked.

Nor has dry erase board cleaner.

 

I've got an old single-student school desk (tan top w/ metal adjustable base) that just won't give up the crayola marker colors.

 

Any other suggestions?

Rubbing alcohol. If the magic eraser hasn't worked, I wouldn't count on it though. Try the ra with the eraser.

I hate to say it, but you may have to strip it and refinish. Growing up I had one of these desks. It was my mother's pride and joy. Needless to say she had to refinish that desk 2 or 3 memorable times. She wasn't pleased with me. :glare:

I don't think it is strippable. The top isn't wood, it is a new and improved 1960s or so laminate top. And, it is so old, that perhaps the reason the marker won't come off is that its protective coating has been worn out. Thanks anyway.

You could try a damp wool cloth and baking soda. (Sprikle the baking soda on the desk and then scrub with the cloth). That's how I used to get crayon marks off the walls when my kids were little.

Depending on the finish, you might try putting a cotton cloth over the crayon then placing a hot iron on the cloth. Since crayons are waxy, the cloth with the hot iron on it will leech out the crayon.

I have removed sharpie marker ink from numerous things with sol-u-mel from melaleuca. I keep it on hand just for these things. ;)

How about soaking a cloth in bleach and laying it on there for a while? You may want to do this outside.

 

Otherwise I would try a wax solvent like Goo Gone. I have had good luck with De-solv-it. It is an orange based cleaner that works great on crayon.

I've also had good luck getting crayon off with Goo-Gone - worth a try, anyway.

When my youngest ds was about 2 he believed the walls in our living room were a canvas on which he was to create his most beloved "drawings" - with markers none the less.

 

What I found worked best to remove his creations were Goo Gone and Scrubbing Bubbles. Oddly enough, they didn't necessarily work on the same colors. If I remember correctly, the Goo Gone worked best on orange and SB worked best on purple.

 

You might try one of those. If that doesn't work, if you have liquid dishwasher detergent that has bleach in it, you might give that a try. Just put a little on the mark full strength and let it sit a while.

I've gotten crayon off of our laminate floors with murphy's oil soap and water. don't know if that would work, but if none of the other great suggestions pan out, it might be worth a try. :)

Hmm....I heard WD-40 works. Spray a bit on and then use Dawn dish soap (cuts the grease best) to wash it all up. Something bout the WD reactivating the grease. I would only use it as a last resort though and only after testing to make sure it wouldn't cause damage.

My dd wrote on the walls with a red crayon once. I was able to take a hair dryer and melt the wax, but it still left some color. 409 took that right off. One or the other wouldn't have worked, it took both steps.

I've used toothpaste (regular paste, not the gel) to remove Sharpie from an oak desk, walls, and a computer monitor. It might work on Crayola marker.

 

I just used a rough washcloth and dabbed it on the marker. Scrubbed and rinsed with a clean cloth.

 

No traces left.

When the Magic Eraser doesn't work, I tend to throw in the towel. That stuff is crazy good!
