What have been your kids favorite books to listen to as audiobooks?

Recommended Posts

We all loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with award winning Monty Python guy reading it! The Narnia series, The Magic Tree House series, Charlotte's Web, Trumpet of the Swan, Chocolate Fever, Little House (first one), Jim Weiss series (we have a couple). That is all I can think of right now. Oh, and I did find a rare cassette tape, from the library, of Tin Tin that my son loved, he is 6. We are way into books on tape!

I'd like to start listening to an audiobook in the car on the way to and from activities, since we live at least 30 minutes from all activities. Are there any titles that you and your kids have particularly enjoyed listening to as opposed to reading yourselves? Thanks.

We all love EB White reading Trumpet of the Swan. It's easy on the adult ears as well as loved by the kids. The Narnia series is another favorite.

For history, ours loved SOTW CD's and something called Principles of America or something like that. I don't know what the "principles" part was, but they were excellent dramatizations of moments in American history. Very captivating.

Anne of Green Gables

Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles series

Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series (these are adult rather than kid, but my 8 yo daughter adores her---we did have to stop for a while several books into the series as the time period moves more toward WWI and gets a bit darker and heads into somewhat more mature territory than she's ready to handle yet)

Redwall

Percy Jackson and the Olympians (my husband found the voice annoying though)

It's the perfect time to listen to all those books you would ideally read to them. We went through most of the audio books in our library. Many of them have been mentioned. The dc grew up listening together and discussing the books. Book studies have never been difficult for them because of this. :)

Ditto on many of the ones already mentioned, but here are a couple others:

Bud, Not Buddy

The Watsons Go to Birmingham

Mr Chickee's Funny Money

Mr Chickee's Messy Mission (this one and all above by Christopher Paul Curtis)

The Stray (Dick King-Smith)

A Year Down Yonder (Richard Peck)

Room One , and Frindle (Andrew Clements)

Homer Price

The Series of Unfortunate Events (read by Tim Curry; the author reads a couple of the books and my kids didn't enjoy those as much)

Double ditto on Hank the Cowdog which are intended to be listened to rather than read.

We usually listen to audio books only while vacation-driving. However, my husband spends about 3 hours daily in the car. He tried audio books for adults, but complained they were too smutty and poorly written, so I started getting him kids books! So far he's listened to His Dark Materials, Harry Potter, Witch of Blackbird Pond, Crispin Cross of Lead, Frankenstein, and The Cay. It makes his drive easier, and he's able to discuss them with my son. (Who's usually already read them)

My favorite is The Mysterious Benedict Society and its sequel. I couldn't stop listening to it. :)
