  1. I do freezer Cooking in bulk for this very reason! Sloppy Joes Pancakes and Sausage
  2. My 13 yr old Dd finished 6B years ago, went through Jacob's Algebra in two years and then into NEM 1 and is almost half way through NEM2. She understands all the concepts, feels much of the work is tedious, yet makes many small errors. (She never had a math error in her younger years.) She has the ability, but very little drive to excell. She seems to be hitting a wall with the intensity of the problems. She is stuck on Test Paper 3, confused about what they are asking for on some of the problems. She works independently and comes to me for help with corrections. I've been thinking of switching to Discovery Math. She thinks it looks babyish compared to NEM, but is considering it an option. I have three more math gifted kids coming behind her and am trying to find one program for them all to go through if possible. Any ideas or suggestions? Kathy:confused:
  3. I've always heard new people should start with 3B, so I wouldn't entirely skip it.
  4. Singapore came out with Discovery Math to replace NEM a few years ago. It has more color, more student wxplanation and the lay out looks more appealing to my kids. However, it moves a little slower than NEM. Not sure if there's any other differences.
  5. My then 9 yr. old did Jacob's Algebra before starting NEM 1. That worked well for her. I'm considering Discovery math for my second child though?
  6. I mix the dough in the bread machine and let it go through the first rise. Then take it out and do the second rise in loaf pans and bake in the oven. I think it rises much better that way. I'm on my third machine over 18 years, and I'd buy a new one if this one died.
  7. The progarm I teach uses the y saying /e/ as in happy, at the end of a two or more syllable word.
  8. Late responding, however... My oldest did Harold Jacob's Algebra before beginning NEM. My second child is finishing PM6 and doing LOF. We also had difficulty keeping the positives/negatives straight.
  9. We use the Text to introduce and discuss the lesson, only to the extent needed with each kid. Then my kids do the lesson in the workbook on their own. I don't allow them to skip anything in the workbooks, but we often skip over things in the text book. When we hit a wall we can always go back to that part of the text or use the reviews in it when needed, but mine usually do not need it. I use the Chalenging Word Problems as well. The word problems do not line up exactly with the book topics, so I always work half a book behind in CW using it more as a review. I try to assign a few problems once or twice a week from CW. Kathy
  10. My Dd used it in 5th, and I plan for Ds to use it in 6th.

  12. My Dh does help in teaching History, so he is more helpful in chooding history curriculum. Overall he also sayd he trusts me completely. When I really need his help, I have to find the right time to get his attention to really look at our options, but his attentions to curriculum are limited. We were both professional teachers, so it must just be a 'guy' thing:)
  13. Play lots of games with numbers! Roll two or three number cubes (dice) and add quickly. You can make a board that has all the answers on it and see how fast you can "cover up" all the answers that have been rolled or use spinners. Flip two numbered cards over and add. Play how many ways can we make a number? (6 is 1and 5, 2and 4, double 3, zero and 6, etc.) Otherwise,I agree that she's young and facts will come with practice.
  14. My oldest Dd started with Saxon 2, being rather gifted in math she soon became bored with it. We switched to Singapore, which has been much better for us. she is now in NEM 1. However, since I still have it, all of my kiddos have gone through Saxon 2 because I like the meeting time activities and the fact drill. We only do the meeting time items that they need, alternating between them to shorten the time. We only do one side of the worksheet (the next kid does the backs). I usually end up combining Saxon lessons that are similar in the second half of the book. That's what we do anyways. Kathy
  15. We've used all the levels and really enjoy the variety in the content.
  16. We are adding more advanced topics into our last few years of school because we don't want to graduate too early. Dd is not overly motivated to finish early anyways.
  17. In my experience working with children with LD issues, homeschool moms tend to be very in tune to when something isn't quite 'normal'. If you think there may be an issue (and it sounds to me like you do) then you should have him tested to find out exactly what is going on. On the other hand, homeschooling is the best thing for a child with learning issues and you probably are already doing a lot of things right with him. Direct Phonics instruction is a must, so it's great that you're doing that. I recommend seeing if there are any Nild educational therapists near you. www.Nild.net They have a list of members on the sight, but there are many therapists that are not listed because they can't afford the membership fees. You can call their office to get more info. Kathy
  18. Switching to cursive usually helps. Although I've had a few LD students that switch the sounds, so they confuse them in cursive as well, when they spell. Reversing letters and/or numbers is fairly common until about age 6 or 7. I wouldn't worry unless you see other symptoms of learning issues as well.
  19. Perhaps as an aside, to learn the multiplication facts, have her count by that number saying the multiples or answers only. Make it a game to see how fasy she can say them. This is great for the one with LD issues as well. Otherwise I'd do what others have said with math enrich and let her move on. My Dd slowed down in Singapore 4B (age 7) and again when we hit Algebra (age 10 -mostly attitude issues not math ability). I try to balance age, desire and challenge.
  20. After using PP with my first two, I am now using it with my third child. I have also used it a little with older students struggling with reading. I think it is a thorough, yet simple way to teach phonics systematically. It's easy to add to when needed ( second and third chidren used Explode the Code also). It's easy to speed through when they're picking it up quickly. Kathy;)
  21. We used Phonics Pathways and added Explode the Code with one that needed something more. Earlybird does get a little harder in B, we added a lot of math games and real world problem solving. Maybe just use OPG as a Guide for you to follow the progression of skills, but make it more of a game ors group similar lesson into one. That's what I had to do with Saxon when we used it. I highly recommend singapore when she's ready for level 1.
