  1. I have experienced this in conversation many years prior to social media. I fear the backlash, as the steady stream of magnification now promoted through social media has the exact opposite effect: that people no longer realize how truly bad it was in the past.
  2. I'm so excited! I got a new-to-me phone and was able to put the Overdrive Libby app on it. This phone is bright enough to read from and fairly easy on the eyes. I was able to give Patricia Wentworth another try, with The Case is Closed. I think I stand by my original verdict, these books are maybe the equivalent of playing too many games on my phone rather than getting work done (fun once in awhile), but anyway happy with how the week went for sure!
  3. Who's paying for wedding photos? I would want a nice head-on shot, too, and would be sure to get one at the wedding to post on Facebook/add to the family Christmas card, w.h.y. While you are right to let it go, I totally understand your disappointment and would feel the same.
  4. @Junie I occasionally browse through the large print section at the library. They are so much easier on the eyes! @tuesdayschild I ran across this article by Andy Crouch last week and loved it!

We did this last year. We bought tickets to see a great band, then made reservations at a fancy hotel within walking distance. It had a very nice restaurant, so that's where we ended up having dinner beforehand. We went to another great restaurant for a fancy breakfast, which we never do, on the way home.
  6. That is a good question. I usually use a whole acorn or butternut squash, one onion and a couple peppers. If it's small or I only have a half one leftover, that's when I'll add some other veggies. I would guess 7 cups?
  7. Oven roasted: squash onion bell peppers 3 cloves garlic (I sometimes add sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, even potatoes or carrots to round out) 1/4 c. oil 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. thyme 2 tsp. rosemary salt & pepper Mix oil and spices in a big bowl. Add chopped veggies and stir to coat. Pour onto cookie sheet. Bake at 450 for 20 minutes or until veggies are tender.
  8. I really need to be more on top of our humidifier as everyone starts getting stuffy heads from the dry heat.
  9. You need to make sure that air is getting in there, so not too closed a pattern. Keep an eye on it and you'll be able to tell if it's catching.
  10. My teepee over loosely bunched newsprint usually ends up looking more like a lattice and works well. If you have slightly larger piece of kindling to hold down your lattice/teepee/newsprint combo, it should all catch just fine. Dry kindling, dry wood, patience and attention... you should have everything you need!
  11. I searched up a manual, assuming all Hearthstone Homestead Wood stoves are the same: Pull the lever forward (towards the front of the stove) to open the primary air control; push the lever back (to the rear of the stove) to close the primary air control.
  12. I too got caught up reading last week's thread but not posting. Three books read between then and now: Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder. A powerful biography for book club, Deo's story lingers. I found it a bit uneven - I think because he is still fairly young and his life meanders on in its circuitous way, the story feels unfinished. Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty. I'm very grateful to this forum for reminding me of this author! So funny, yet her description of grief left me in tears several times. I saw parallels in the setting and title to Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None (which I first read as Ten Little Indians). Perfect epilogue. Grey Mask by Patricia Wentworth. My teenage self would have enjoyed these safe books.
  13. My niece is named Janneke. Her younger brother is Joel Peter. My SIL's Dutch family immediately nicknamed him Jip. I wonder if they still call him that, lol.
  14. Yup, you just can't charge and use earbuds at the same time. Which you probably shouldn't be doing anyway.
  15. Batiste. WalMart or any pharmacy. Instructions on the bottle, easy peasy. Only downside is I have now increased my aerosol bottle consumption.
  16. Wow, I think return airfare to Europe here is $1000 per person, so for 6 people that's $6000 right there.
  17. Assuming you have very good reasons that you can only do one (because my first choice would always be split the difference), I would vote vacation.
  18. I finished Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. A whole backlog of library book requests came in at once and while I had no memory of ordering this title, I had a pretty good idea it must have come from this board. A subsequent search shows many mentions, so thanks to all! It completely sucked me in, I love self-makeovers.
  19. Ah, okay, I realized after I posted that this could be what y'all were talking about. Yes, definitely don't want that. Will have to watch for that at next second-hand vehicle purchase. 😁
  20. I love, love, love mine. So much easier to lock and unlock all doors at once. I have the ignition key and the fob on a cheap carabiner clip to make winter idling secure and easy. ETA: Unless we are not talking about the same kind of fob? I don't have a newer vehicle, so I could be missing something here.
  21. Talking about this article with my family, perhaps it should be restated that hyper-conscientious people don't tend to hold top positions.
  22. Yes, rug! Play pen Pet beds Bookcase Musical instruments Reading Nook Phone message center/small desk Additional pantry cupboard I've seen a somewhat similar though smaller space with a spinning wheel displayed.
