  1. :iagree: Also, an aside thought- we have sat in on many master classes w/ Q & A time after. A large number of these people (a couple of Julliard profs. included) said they never keep a student longer than 5 yrs. They feel that the student needs a new artistic 'voice' after that. --like I said, just an aside. Changing teachers is very stressful. :grouphug:
  2. Absolutely and absolutely!!! I have resolved this year to get my rear up at 6:00am, to grade their stuff as they complete it and to be on my toes with their work. It has made ALL the difference in the tone of our days.
  3. :iagree:I also vote Tale of Two Cities, but OH! how I loved Great Expectations...poor Pip, dear Joe. It is so full of fantastic characters.
  4. The Silmarillion-Tolkien Sense and Sensibility- Austin The Hound of the Baskervilles- Doyle
  5. :iagree:and with Karen too. The 3 week sample schedule was the key for me. I needed it in my hands and it really took a few days of picking it up and putting it back down(due to feeling overwhelmed) before I really began to see how it would work.
  6. :iagree: with all of this, particularly the ignoring one. It is VERY hard to do, but speaking as one with a child that lives for arguement/debate, that is an invaluable tool.
  7. Ovoviviparous! I remember that word from 10th grade biology class!! WOO HOO!!
  8. Art and music are actually 2 of the areas I don't worry about. Yours are still very young. We didn't start formal lesson in any music until they were 8. Look in your area there are usually people giving art classes for a very reasonable price and then you can often get a multiple child discount. As they get older, CC is always a great option for science. I tend to not worry too much about gaps. I have found as I teach my children I see gaps that I have had in my own education(including 4 yrs of univ). Any system will have some gaps, but you as the constant educator will be open to looking for and identifying them in your children. Win/win.
  9. You ask your dd-12 to complete some task and she replies "Yes, most certainly." :001_huh:
  10. I am looking for some opinions on how the progymnasmata approach has worked for you through the high school years. Did you see continued improvement in writing ability? Do you think that your child was better equiped to write in-depth than if you had used a more traditional approach? It seems so many use this in the younger years, but I am wondering about successful/non-successful results in olders.
  11. :iagree: After settling into TOG, I find that I am on the boards substantially less. You explained that all very well.
  12. Oh, thank you! I was hoping the first person wouldn't tell me how entirely wrong I am--although I know it is a definite possiblity.:tongue_smilie: It is not difficult to see the artistry of her poems, but heavens they are so fatalistic/morose (what is the right word?). I want to like her. I wonder if there are those who like her work and do not find it sad.
  13. Yep. Happened here once. Dd swore she had NEVER multiplied fractions or found equivalent fractions before.:glare: It is frustrating. It does come back quickly though. Hang in there.:001_smile:
  14. Just another jinxed Walmart line person chiming in. I always pick poorly. I've learned to have a sense of humor about it because I know how it will always end. :D
