  1. Can you leave the 3A book and go on to the 3B book for a while? Come back at the estimating and long division in a few weeks/months, when she might be more ready to handle them?
  2. My sons 8 & 5 both love chess. Chesskid.com is fantastic for them both (they have it on their tablets and get to use it weekends). DS8 actually has recently started winning games against my husband. These movie suggestions are awesome, thanks!
  3. Someone posted this link in another thread just yesterday. You might find it interesting. https://welltrainedmind.com/a/bias-compromise-teaching-history-children/
  4. I just saw that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is on sale for 99¢! It's the one read by Anne Hathaway and it is excellent! Thanks for the heads-up on Mary Poppins, I just added it to our library.
  5. Thanks, all! I'll be spending some time this summer picking out a much more diverse reading list thanks to your input.
  6. Final plan: handwriting: Zaner-Bloser 3 spelling: Spelling Workout C grammar: First Language Lessons 3 math: Singapore Math (Common Core Ed) 3A/3B, finish up Beast Academy 3, and probably start BA4 science: Adventures with Atoms and Molecules 1 & 2, w/Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia history: Story of the World 3 literature: Classical House of Learning Literature (grammar stage Early Modern) Latin: Little Latin Readers, primers A & B morning time: religion, memory work, poetry, Shakespeare, artist & composer study from history time period, and family read-alouds. Soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, baseball in the spring, and looking into swim and/or scouts.
  7. I'll second CHOLL. I'm using it for my rising 3rd grader, but I have all of the files for all of the years saved for future use. It is exactly what I wanted in a history/lit curriculum.
  8. Everyone above the age of 8? Tonight is "Make Your Own" night. Eat whatever you want - just make sure to clean up after yourself. Bonus if you make something for mom. (I'm no help - I'm making baked mac & cheese because it's raining and that's what I want to eat.)
  9. So, yeah, I'm going to have to buy those pencils in bulk. *swoon*
  10. Off the top of my head, I'm only familiar with Newbery books. Could you point me in the direction of other book awards? (Off to google...)

  12. Has anyone ever started reading the Newbery Award winning books to their kids at the first book (from 1922) and then reading one each month until finished the entire list? I'm thinking that it is possible to finish the entire list before DS8 finishes 10th grade, and then read them all again before the baby finishes high school... Any cons to this plan? FWIW, I would use the rest of our read aloud time on shorter books, other classics, whatever the kids fancy, and picture books while the kids are small...
  13. This is my hope. DH feels like he has to pay cash for his kids to go to college, as his dad did with him and his 2 siblings. DS8 would start college in 10 years, but DS 8mos would be going into 4th(?) grade at that point. I would like to homeschool everyone until they are entering highschool, if I have the option. Worst case scenario, I do not want to go back for *at least* two more years (when DS3 would enter kindergarten) so that I would only be paying for daycare/preschool for one child. Also, I have to work 2 more years to be vested in my state pension. I left teaching when DS5 was born, and plan to return. However, I will have to do some coursework before I can go back, as my license is expiring and there were some new requirements that came online just as I was leaving... I plan to start doing that coursework within the next year so that, if something comes up and I need to go back sooner, I will be employable.
  14. arctic_bunny, how's it going? Thinking about you today because I removed facebook, twitter, and instagram from my cellphone before bed last night. I'n going to attempt to go the entire summer without social media. Wish me luck!
  15. I loathe that place with a passion so, of course, there is one right up the road. The noise hurts. (I have sensory issues.) My aunt gave us $70 in gift cards for Christmas; she meant only $35, but had a hard time ordering them online and she insisted we keep all of it. We went last Tuesday, when it was 100F outside and we have no air conditioners. We got there when they opened, played every.single.game a million times, had the not-entirely-terrible all-you-can-eat pizza & lettuce buffet (that is *not* salad!), and stayed for 3 hours. Greatest Christmas gift ever. Glad I never have to go back. ;-)
  16. This is great. I'm actually thinking about giving up my own screens (mostly, my phone & social media) for the summer. I know that the more time I spend on social media, the worse of a mom I am...
  17. We have no kids in the neighborhood and DS8's best friend moved away last year so... DS8 complains that he has no friends, and he's right. :-(
  18. I bought "a skeptic's guide to American history" and "turning points in modern history" to help with teaching history the next two years. I have another credit to spend, so I keep looking...
  19. Audible is having a two-for-one sale on selected Great Courses. I need help choosing! Any recommendations for courses you found worthwhile? (This would be for *me*.) If it matters, DS8 will be going through SOTW3 and chemistry next year (3rd grade). I have a B.S. in mathematics and an M.Ed. in math/science ed; history, economics, etc were never my strong suits, so that's where I am looking...
  20. I'm going to call the neurology nurse on Monday and see if they have any recommendations for adult doctors near-ish us. Our pediatrician's office sent us a long list of adult doctors, but none of them are closer than 20 minutes away. I just don't want to switch to someone who then won't work with our specialists, since they are "pediatric" specialists. This is a good point. He won't be driving for the foreseeable future, so I can drive him once or twice if it is out of his comfort zone, and once he starts driving again it won't be such an unknown. He hasn't been going in more than once or twice a year for a few years, so maybe being farther (further?) away isn't as big a deal as I thought it would be. Thanks!
  21. DS21 needs to find an adult doctor. DS has epilepsy, food allergies, and (greatly improved) asthma. His neurologist at Children's Hospital in Boston has said that he can stay with him as long as he wants and I'm guessing that the allergist would say the same. However, his Children's-affiliated pediatrician sent him a letter saying that he wouldn't be seen in the office again after he turns 22. Fair enough. But, they sent us a list full of their recommended doctors for him to chose, and they are all located in/around Boston; that's a 30+ minute drive from there, without traffic. (Pediatrician's office is 15 minutes away, but they only admit to Boston.) DS works an irregular schedule that changes week to week, and he's a new driver (actually, currently he can't drive for 6 months), and he's not confident driving to unfamiliar places just yet. Besides asking for recommendations on facebook, how does one go about finding, meeting, and ultimately choosing a new doctor for a new adult who has prior specialists already in place? (My doc is also 30 min away and DH doesn't really have one, so we are no help.) What steps do we follow and what questions do we ask? Thanks for any advice.
  22. I second (third?) the antihistamine/decongestant. It will dry out the ears/relieve compression on the eardrums a bit. See if it helps? As a toddler/preschooler, DS8 got multiple, antibiotic-resistant ear infections that caused temporary hearing issues. Never got tubes. That stopped as he got older and hasn't been a problem since. Good luck!
  23. This purse, this wallet, this pen, and my paint chip swatches (never leave home without them!).
  24. I was raised in a very strict "sit there until you eat every last bite" household and was traumatized by it. I've had to work to get (somewhat) over it and not be horrible to my children the way my father was with me. I have found that The Feeding Doctor and Ellyn Satter (both FaceBook links) have helped me tremendously.
  25. Coincidence that this showed up in my email today? It's from the lead authors of the math Common Core standards... http://commoncoretools.me/2017/06/07/ways-of-thinking-and-ways-of-doing/
