  1. I used the Answers Bible Curriculum from Answers in Genesis when I was a Sunday school teacher and I know of homeschoolers who modify it for home use. Here is the review from Cathy Duffy: http://cathyduffyreviews.com/bible/Answers-Bible-Curriculum.htm Sometimes only one or two students came so I had to modify it for that situation.
  2. I had no idea it sounded like thee in front of a word beginning with a vowel.
  3. I've had to buy everything that I can't get for free used and very cheap for next year. The boxes are coming in and I hold my breath and expect the worst each time.
  4. She thinks that cooking and caring for children is so special, so she doesn't understand why blacks had to do it for whites *because* they were inferior people.
  5. She asks, "if white people treated black people so badly and they thought that blacks were inferior, why would they want them cooking their food?" She wants to know about the book's time period and the time during slavery.
  6. My daughter is reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and she has questions about African Americans that I don't know the answers to. I'd like to ask them here without sounding disrespectful. I think disrespectful is the right word. I'm also probably very ignorant but I'd like to be more informed. First question: Are African Americans still called negros? She didn't know what that word meant and I said that that was the term that used to be used to describe those with black skin. She wishes to know if that term is still used and if not, when did it stop. I also explained that there is another word that starts with a N that is very bad, worse than the F word even, and we absolutely never use it. She understood. Second question: If black people were hated so much, why did they cook food for white people? She couldn't understand why and I've never given it much thought. I'm very nervous to post this. Edit: updated issue in post 30. Edit2: Thanks everyone. She has decided to put down Roll of Thunder and chose to read The Help instead. It is more enjoyable to her and we are having the types of discussions that I wanted to have before. I feel more informed for those discussions because of this thread, so thanks again.
  7. My unique situation and my stubbornness equals two distinct morning basket times. My daughter is 12 and I have the babies, technically a toddler (almost preschooler) and a baby. My daughter wakes up slowly with a book and my toddler needs an episode or two of Dinosaur Train (hate that show!). Then we start on breakfast (typically yogurt, cereal, and fruit) and their chores. On a good day I did all of mine before the two oldest wake up. That way I can concentrate on teaching the toddler how to make his bed, feed the baby again, etc. My daughter and I do the first morning basket of the day which consists of Bible, a read aloud (currently Sense and Sensibility) and one other thing: we rotate things like poetry, fun Latin reading, and artist study. At this time my toddler is playing with legos or something, hopefully quietly and the baby is where he needs to be. I juggle. She then moves onto her checklist. The second morning basket is with the babies. While the toddler is playing and the baby is probably in my lap I read a Bible story, maybe a few other seasonal board books, and maybe we sing some nursery rhymes. My toddler is probably quite insistent on watching more Dinosaur Train at this time. It was on ALL DAY when I was sick and pregnant so we are weaning him off. I will add things as the babies get older and my daughter and I will probably modify hours as she enters high school. I don't want to give up that time with her but I'm not sure yet how I will make it work either.
  8. I have the first K12 HO book and plan to use that too. I think. Undecided actually. I've already put together a plan (what I think is the best for us between WTM 2nd edition and Pandia Press Human Odyssey) using the red Kingfisher and HO but I keep second guessing myself.
  9. Is this it? http://www.amazon.com/Kingfisher-Illustrated-History-World-Present/dp/1856978621/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1459250248&sr=8-1&keywords=kingfisher+history+of+the+world I own the red one and I'm getting the impression (from the boards) that it sucks for outlining. Is this one better? We are doing WTM logic stage history.
  10. I'm only commenting because you mentioned Stargate and I'm watching it right now. Jolinar is in Sam and everybody is freaking out.
  11. I needed this, thanks. This morning I just sat and watched while my son dumped out a loaf of bread (onto the coffee table) and ate a slice. I was feeding the baby on the couch and I didn't do anything about the mess at all. My husband didn't even ask later while there was a loaf of bread smooshed on the table. He let me nap.
  12. My baby sisters are mothers. Well, two of them are. I remember the days each were born. Now they have babies and toddlers of their own. It is surreal.
  13. Every time! The movie too, even though it is Disney. Toddler DS watched it every day, nearly all day, when I was first pregnant with baby DS and I cried every time.
  14. I wore a dress to church on Sunday, I'm sorry you missed it. It was amazing. You see, my toddler thought he should go under it while his baby brother was being baptized... it was a hoot.
  15. I've been in apartments my entire adult life. I will not hesitate to tell the proper authorities that I smell weed next door or their music is too loud. I live near a college campus so that sort of thing happens a lot. The thing that annoys me the most is that I have two boys now and there is no safe place for them to go run around and play. There aren't any playgrounds nearby either. We tend to be quiet but most people around tend to be gone all day while we are home all day. We haven't had those types of noise issues.
  16. I have a friend that says that there is no such thing as skim cows so she only drinks whole milk. I'd stay with whatever has been working for you.
  17. We have liked Latin for Children and will start Latin Alive this summer. The current plans are to use their logic and poetry next year so I can't say much about them yet.
  18. I preferred the instructions in the second edition. I was going to do it until I got a textbook that I wanted to use instead.
  19. What did you use, are using or will use for poetry in seventh grade? Why? We've just been reading poetry for enjoyment but I'd like to step it up a notch occasionally and discuss it with academic terms like we know what we are talking about.
  20. I hate it. I miss seasons, the humidity gives me Hermione hair unless I use five different products, it is too darn hot to do anything with kids outside most of the time, the bugs are huge, hurricanes are scary, and Disney is close but technically too far away because of money.
  21. I add morning basket to WTM. I'm currently revamping her day because I just had a baby but a lot of it is independent. She has a checklist that I modeled after Mystie's. Oh and she is doing Apologia general science instead of wtm science because I want to do Apologia in high school and figured that it was best to start from the beginning. I will probably glean some ideas from this thread.
  22. Well Educated Mind vs How to Read A Book I have both. Which one do you prefer and why? I haven't read Adler yet because it seems daunting. I would be using it for self study now and my daughter would use it later. I know that Ambleside recommends Adler for their year 7 and so do other curriculums.
