  1. Our water heaters are on the same line. I have no idea why. We bought our house as a foreclosure and were told one water heater didn't work, it turned out they were wired up wrong.
  2. I'm sorry you are dealing with this! As far as putting yourself out there to volunteer, trying new things is tough for a lot of people. I have helped sort food for the food pantry, they walk you through exactly what to do. I am certain you could do it and it is very low pressure. If it's awful, you can leave.
  3. Go to Lowes or Home Depot to see what they have. There are a lot of options, some are not expensive. It may spark an idea. They may even sell something like a dryer hose only not as big in diameter.
  4. I don't worry about a schedule, just keep in mind which child you were with last time and take a different one next time.
  5. I had a nice post before the board crashed. Anyway... I try to take just one kid to run errands or for a walk around the block after supper. For awhile I rotated taking them out for breakfast on Saturday mornings. I have also done read aloud with just one child during nap time. My husband and I took just our oldest when we went to TX to help family with the flooding. It wasn't intentionally so we could have one on one time with him, but it was so good we are now trying to think of ways we can have a weekend individually with our other two kids.
  6. Maybe it's a 5 year old thing! I know it's technically edible but it seems most adults don't care for it.
  7. Adding to the above, not everyone had power during that time either so boiling may not have been feasible.
  8. In Beaumont recently the city water pumps and the back up pumps were both under water for the first time ever. They couldn't be repaired until the flood water levels drained. The back up solution was temporary pumps that could put water through the city system but the water was not properly treated. Water had to be boiled in order to be used for drinking.
  9. Just checking in on you all! Hopefully the worst has past by now.
  10. I remember my grandma pickling the rind once, but it wasn't a regular thing she did.
  11. This is exactly what I was thinking. My dad pronounces short e and i the same, it's his accent. He can't hear that he says them the same. It drives my mom crazy but he's been talking that way for 60 some years, he isn't changing now.
  12. Silly question of the night-- Do you eat the white part of the watermelon? My 5 year old loves watermelon and eats it all the way to the tough green skin. When I told him he didn't have to eat the white part, he said he liked it and it reminds him of cucumber. I like cucumbers but don't care for the white part.
  13. This was a project I dreaded. My son's favorite stuffed animal is a dinosaur that was one of the $5 ones from Kohls. In other words, not the highest quality stuffed animal ever. It certainly wasn't meant to be chewed on, wrestled with, or washed umpteen million times. Dinosaur was looking pretty pitiful.l I swear I have in the past 10 years repaired just about every seam. Adding additional stuffing wasn't difficult, I added it through an existing hole and then stitched it closed while watching tv. After I finally did it, Dinosaur looked so much better. I wished I had done it a long time ago. I know you would prefer to outsource, but I bet you can find a YouTube video that could teach you how to do it even if you only have very basic sewing skills.
  14. I'm so sorry Blueridge! My condolences.
  15. I love to eat out at good restaurants and to try new foods. I'd say the furthest I have driven with the only purpose being to go eat would be an hour. However, we definitely would plan to go to an event and make it work out to also visit a certain restaurant in the area. When traveling we do plan our route in order to visit certain restaurants even if it means going a little out of our way. When on road trips we check online reviews to find local restaurants with high ratings and have rarely been disappointed. I am fortunate to live in an area that kind of has a foodie culture so I don't have to drive very far to try new restaurants or enjoy old favorites.
  16. Name please? When I'm in Louisville I'm always looking for restaurants to try.
  17. I prefer Smash Burger, Red Robin, 5 Guys, What-a-burger, then In N Out but any of them would do in a pinch. I wouldn't drive out of my way for any of them though.
  18. Here's another article: that poor girl has been through hell. http://www.twincities.com/2017/09/07/alexandria-girl-was-raped-nearly-drowned-during-monthlong-captivity-charges-say/
  19. Wow! I'm glad she's ok. I've been to Alexandria, it's not the kind of town where you would think something like that would happen.
  20. Last year I got fleece 3/4 zip jackets from Children's Place, my kids love them. They had a variety of colors and on sale were $7! ETA I see now you are looking for you, not your kids. Sorry!
  21. If she had the means, a generator is invaluable, especially for helping with post flood cleanup when there is no power. Even a small one will run a couple fans. This isn't as important, but put pictures, lap tops, and heirlooms in waterproof containers up high. If water gets 6' deep in the house it may not help, but if it stays under 2' it could help a lot. If she decides to ride out the storm, have a go bag ready in case of emergency rescue. My cousins had 10 minutes to prep to leave because that's when a boat was by their house when the water was rising. Pack belongings in plastic bags inside the bag. I would suggest at least a couple changes of clothes, several changes of underwear, medications, cell phone charger, and glasses. Having recently been down to Texas I have learned that there is no way to be 100% prepared. Do your best but know you can't think of every possible situation. My grandparents never took on water or lost power but were stuck at home for 5 days. My aunt (not in a flood zone) got 3' of water in her house and my cousin had water to his eaves (also not on a flood zone). They were all fortunate that they did not have the high winds with all the rain. They prepped as best they could but they expected wind damage and loss of power, not flooding.
  22. My husband has replaced the screen on a few iPhones. It's not too difficult but you do need a special tool set. He got it on eBay.
