  1. I agree with pp, he is very young for 1st grade. He may technically old enough to attend first grade in your state but he would be the youngest. Waiting a year he will be a completely different child.
  2. Thank you! This morning every time I chose hard back this morning it switched to the unillustrated version. I knew I could get it in paperback, but it wasn't what I wanted.
  3. I agree. I believe he also struggled with alcohol prior to having children and having children is part of what sobered him up. The relapse was hinted at although not focused on before his wife said she had enough.
  4. You can watch the previous episodes on the NBC app (1st 3 shows are free). It is also on Hulu. I signed up for a free month, watched all the episodes and then cancelled. I assume you can probably watch the current episodes on the NBC app for a limited time as well.
  5. I'm looking for a hardback copy of Farmer Boy with the Garth Williams illustrations. Anyone know where I can find a new copy of it? I've tried Amazon, local bookstore, Barnes & Noble, and Harper Collins. There is a new edition of the hardback without illustrations (forward by Ree Drummond) and that's all I can locate. We started a set of these for my daughter and I want it to match, plus I like the Garth Williams illustrations.
  6. I love this show! I had never seen it until I binged watched it while sick a few weeks back. I'm glad I didn't miss this gem.
  7. I'm sorry! Could you send them out one or two at a time until they learn how to "play nicely"?
  8. We live in town. We pay for garbage pick up, but you aren't allowed to opt out or pick the company. It is picked up weekly on the same day, by different trucks. We need our recycling picked up weekly but we only need trash pickup every other week. Trash is one large wheeled can, we pay a small extra fee for that convenience. The city provides a large tub about the size of a big Rubbermaid tub for recycling. As far as who sorts the recycling, it goes to a nearby city where there is a sorting center with conveyer belts and people working to pull out the non recyclables. Paper is apparently suctioned off the belt. Even though everything is mixed, if glass gets broken it is no longer able to be recycled as it jams up the belts. There is some controversy over whether or not this is a good method for recycling, though it greatly increases participation.
  9. She didn't say anything about that, but it seems like a smart idea.
  10. What a day! Put up your feet and relax if you can.
  11. The doctor says it's gastritis, basically an irritation in the stomach. My son is to lay off dairy for a few days, take maalox, and report back if he isn't feeling better in a couple days. Her initial guess was constipation but she ruled that out pretty quickly after talking to him and poking around his belly.
  12. I'm not sure the size of your town but goats milk is sold by the half gallon at my local grocery store. It's usually near the creamer. It is not at every location, but not impossible to find either.
  13. For a three hour hike I would wear your Columbia pants and a light weight rain jacket. I'd skip the plastic bags and just deal with wet feet. Dry them well when you are done. Have a change of clothes in the car. I kind of enjoy hiking in the rain if it isn't all day long, there aren't many crowds. All day rain is miserable.
  14. It doesn't sound like this is the case with this baby, but sometimes the bleeding diaper rash is a yeast infection. That's something to consider if you can't get it to clear up. Poor sweet baby, I hope you are able to figure out what he/she needs! Hang in there.
  15. I haven't used it. I'm not sure about the skin care but the eyelash stuff really works. My friend started using it and I hadn't seen her in about a month. We went out to dinner and I thought she had gotten eyelash extensions. Her eyelashes were noticeably thicker and longer.
  16. He woke up feeling puny this morning, we have an appointment for later today.
  17. My younger son had it the week before for a couple days. It's possible he has two different things going on. I'll call the doctor tomorrow because a week is long enough. I just keep thinking he has finally kicked it, then he hasn't.
  18. Last Monday and Tuesday my son, age 9 threw up once, had zero appetite, slept most of the day, no fever. His stomach bothered him but he could not explain how it felt. He was restless and moaned whenever he wasn't asleep. He woke up fine Wednesday, ate, played, did school work and acted completely normal. Around 4:00 he curled up in a ball and was restless again, moaned, wouldn't eat at all, and only drank a bit for the rest of the night. Thursday through Sunday have been the same way. He acts completely normal all day and then around 4:00 he starts complaining about his stomach. You can see in his eyes he doesn't feel well, he refuses to eat, and will only drink a little. One friend suggested dehydration, but he's drinking normally before it hits. My husband suggested constipation, but our son says he is pooping normally. Someone suggested anxiety, but he's not an anxious kid and he's pretty open with me when things are bothering him. I feel like since it's been a week I should take him to the doctor, but assume she will tell me it's a virus and he just needs to wait until it passes. It's very weird that he acts completely normal up until it hits and that it's starting about the same time each day.
  19. It is a pretty crop. In my area it's still grown but apparently there isn't nearly as much as there once was. I moved here right as everything was changing so I don't have anything to compare it with.
  20. I live in a tobacco state, there's a few acre tobacco field less than a mile from my house and tobacco barns that I pass regularly. Next spring and summer I will regularly pass trailers full of baled tobacco headed to market. That said, smoking is not unheard of but I don't think it's super common either. It has been banned indoors for 15ish years. The nearby city was one of the first places in the country to ban indoor smoking and all the smaller surrounding communities quickly followed. It's also not allowed outdoors on the campuses of the universities, hospitals, or many work places. When you drive past a hospital you will see a small group of people in wheelchairs with their iv stands near the side of the road smoking, it's kind of odd. When I went back to the Midwest this summer I was shocked by how much more common smoking was, there were even a couple restaurants with smoking areas. That was a blast from the past. I don't remember smoking being very common as a child. ETA apparently the state of CA banned smoking several years earlier. Maybe ours was the first city, I'm going to have to find some old articles. Interestingly Wikipedia has the smoking ban for my town and the nearby city as 10 years later than it actually happened. I've never updated a Wikipedia reference, but now I'm tempted.
  21. Not my kids, but my husband's shoe size kept up with his age until 15. He's 6'5" now.
