  1. I think they have pretty much the same content. Only the pictures have been updated and the teachers manual has had the biggest overhaul. If he is getting that much from BJU I would try to stay with it, my ds is not in the 7th grade math as he has used it from K and it's been a wonderful fit. Although at times, it gets difficult, he has had tremendous retention. Now, my youngest is in CLE because she would NEVER want to write that much...lol. She is messy, silly, scattered, has 0 attention span. Teaching her is like trying to staple jello to a tree. She has mastered the art of looking busy while getting nothing done. The CLE books are great for her, the lessons are succinct, and the books are consumable. She gets a small lesson from me in the beginning, 10-15 minutes then she is on her own to complete the lesson. It has quizzes and a test at the end. It lacks color but that's a small price to pay for convenience. Lastly, she scored the highest on her standardized math scores...who knew?
  2. Yes, I cook dinners for all but one maybe two nights a week. We ALWAYS have desserts like those ones rookie posted above. We have had an abundance of zucchini so I have made zucchini apple crisp and zucchini choc. chip cookies as of late.:001_smile:
  3. I think the reason they have them start writing it out in 5th is because they are preparing them for 6th and 7th when the "norm" is a textbook and they are to copy the problems out. Unless my child had a LD I would think the little writing required in BJU 5 is fine. If you have a child that is really resistant to writing out math problems, maybe you can find out why? Does it hurt, is he having reversals, is he not copying the same problems down and mixing up numbers. If that was the case, I would address those issues. If it's simply because he hates to write, I'd make him do it:tongue_smilie:, it will prepare him to keep using BJU, it won't get any easier.
  4. How about the Drive Through History DVD's:001_smile:
  5. If I want to buy the T-shirt it's an extra $10 per child, if I want the CD it's and extra $5 per CD. But it is $10 per child regardless of the additions.
  6. Edited after reading second post. Nothing to say, other than good luck!
  7. :iagree: The relationship between mom and child is VERY different than that of teacher and child. At the end of the day, we are still with our children, teachers are not. We see them through their entire life, teacher's do not. Don't get me wrong, I have academic standards, but I also have standards for life. Honesty, compassion, kindness, gentleness are AS important to me as their academic well being. BALANCE it the main goal, happy kids, that are academically well rounded, with a strong moral compass. A happy mom, doing the best she can do in her situation, whatever that may be, I need to look at myself and know I made the right choices, for me, and them.;)
  8. OMG, Periwinkle was my favorite when I was a kid, and still my favorite:)
  9. That stinks.....where are you, we are drowning in Cukes, Green beans and squash......I'll ship them:D
  10. I think you will be pretty suprised with CLE 6, I would not say it would be review at all. Did you have him take the placement test for it? I would say its quite a step up from Easy Grammar. When you say remediate, do you mean, math facts? Or Fractions, decimals and percents? Or basic foundational math? MUS is separated into topics as well as Math Without Borders, but not nearly as flashy as Horizons. I think it might be best to try some for the free online placement tests, Singapore, Saxon and TT come to mind, I'm sure there's more. Then you can see where he is placing, and hone in on those particular concepts are holding him up. Lastly, you could look into the BJU work-text for review. You could pull out the chapters he needs work on staple them and put them in a folder, he would never know the grade level.:D
  11. I have the same system. Mine say Jan., Feb., March on the large tabbed green files. Then in those I have a file for each week of that month week 1, week 2 week 3 and so on. I have Advent in the Dec. file, Thanksgiving in the November file and so on(if their are any special projects I want to do). For those items that are consumables they are in a colored pocked folder, one color per child in the weeks folder. My older two do a lot on their own that are not consumable, for those they look at their handy dandy HST assignment sheet that is in their pocket folder. It's hard to explain, I should post pics. I also buy birthday cards early, address and stamped, then I put them in one week before the persons birthday, this way when we get to that week I just toss it in the mail. :) You can get great deals on special occasion cards the day after (Valentines, Mothers Day, Christmas..etc.)
  12. I have them, and I agree the sample is VERY chatty. He's really not that bad in the rest of them although he does have that sorta style. He really digs into the lessons and my dd really likes him.
  13. Don't you just love a bargain (Christmas Tree Shop Tune):D It dries me insane they charge so much for it. The publisher, who usually charges top dollar is selling them for a fraction of the cost. I hope they work out for you!!
  14. I just hired YellowBook to do ours, as well as put our business number in the book. he package I got costs $62 a month. They did it all.
  15. Ouch! I agree Facebook, is a public forum, you can say whatever you want. Remove the comment, unfriend them. Unfortunately, that's the nature of online conversation, you can comment on whatever you want, even if someone finds it offensive. I stopped using FB, not because I got comments like these , but because I saw many of my friends and family say and act so differently from how I knew them. It stinks.
  16. Since on my latest kick to stop making it so hard, for me AND them:glare: I tossed Introductory Logic out of my shopping cart from Rainbow Resource's and went with Logic in 100 minutes.
  17. We have used SWR for 8 years, with 3 kids. 2 have tested out of it, and 1 is on list 0. I have always felt that SWR does exactly this, "It becomes, therefore, the teacher's business to prevent false spelling, and, if an error has been made, to hide it away, as it were, so that the impression may not become fixed." - C. Mason My understanding has been, this is Sanseri's philosophy, it is the same a CM's. When you dictate the word for the first time you are making sure by the process of dictation, they are thinking of the correct phonograms, and they are writing the correct phonograms. They are not to guess, or allowed to write the words incorrectly. I sit directly next to them, so the first time they write the spelling word, IT IS correct. Only during the quizzes or tests do you allow them to write the words on their own, and then go over wrong ones. I would scale back on the amount of words. Set the timer for 20 minutes and do as many as you can in 15 minutes, then take the last 5 minutes to go over markings. They will get faster. I was able to keep my three in different lists, and spend 15 minutes dictating lists to them. They would do about 40 words a week. I would rather see you do less words than change the "think to spell" dictation;)
  18. My 12 year old dd- Feeds the dog, makes her bed, picks up her room, and puts her clothes away(daily). Tosses laundry in the dryer when needed, vacuums once a week, dusts once a week, vacuums the pool once a week, unloades the dishwasher daily.Changes all her bed linen weekly (Fridays). My 10 year old ds- Takes out the trash daily, has dog poop duty(daily), brings down recyclables weekly, brushes the dogs teeth twice a week, makes his bed, puts clothes away and picks up his room daily. Empties the dehumidifier daily in the summer, vacuums the pool once a week, vacuums the house once a week and dusts once a week. Changes all her bed linen weekly (Fridays). My 8 year old dd- Makes her bed, picks up her room, and puts her clothes away(daily). Feeds her Guinea pig daily and cleans his cage bi-weekly. Brushes the doges teeth twice a week. Takes out the bathroom trash and wipes down the bathroom counter daily and puts all the silverware away (daily). Lastly, she turns on and off the pool filter in the summer.Changes all her bed linen weekly (Fridays). We have had the kids start making their beds since they were 4. Everyone just gets up and runs around and does their chores, no mumbling, it's just another daily task to them. Best thing we ever did.
  19. Although I do read the math threads among others, I know that I know my kids best. Do what is going to make them succeed in math, writing, grammar , vocabulary..whatever. Does it really make sense for force feed a curriculum to a child, only to find out they retained nothing:001_huh:? It's much better to see progress, however that needs to come. I have 1 student that is an academic dream, my other two are bright. The Singapore I loved using for my older two will not cut the mustard with my third. That's okay, I use different material for her and her scores were amazing. On the IOWA ITBS her total composite was in the 99 percentile and I use whats considered the less- rigorous material for her, in just about everything. My dh and I were shocked! Even for vocabulary, we dropped Latin and her scores still soared(go figure). My older two had great scores but, they work harder, and to think my youngest had the most fun last year. Still she scored the highest and that really put it into perspective for me. I did some last minute changes last night before I hit the purchase button. I really tried to look through their eyes, and for the first time I picked some unknowns for a few subjects. I want them to have fun, they are more likely to retain information that way. I just went with my gut feeling, I can't wait to get the stuff...lol I say, go with your gut, school IS work but it doesn't have to be a tearful mess. Good luck!
  20. My friend had the same issue, her son was going to MIT. She made the transcript show he did the regular science class and then for summer school he did the other science class and they accepted it.
  21. Seeing she did the Keys to... she will most likely fly through the Singapore 6 A & B, which is basically pre-algebra, and need the DM series. :D
