  1. My MIL has MRSA, my dd has a birthday this Saturday and I don't think my MIL should come. I'm a nurse and maybe a bit more protective about this stuff because I have seen it, at it's worst. Her arms have sores on them and she is not even following the basic protocol for person with MRSA by keeping them covered. If it were my own mother,I would ask her not to come, and she would gladly stay home if she ever thought she could hurt the kids. But my MIL is a passive aggressive, manipulative person and she will make my husband feel like a heel. I went as far as saying she can come, don't hug the kids and leave in an hour , then I can have everyone else come later. My husband thinks she'll flip out. Am I overreacting???
  2. How about The Guide to Grammar and Writing, I really like this resource. Go under the Essay and Research tab.
  3. I think it's possible to do anything as long as your disciplined to do it. I think it's important to set realistic goals, then go for it. If you find yourself never getting to stuff you had planed after a month or two, it's time to re-evaluate. I love our afternoons, it's usually History or Science and we are normally in the middle of something fun. In order to keep afternoons free to get to the fun stuff, I had to change a few things. I make dental appointments at 7am. I go grocery shopping one a week at 6:30 am. I get up daily at 5:30 am for cleaning, laundry and breakfast.

  11. It's not one of your choices but my son went to the HS conference and he picked out BJU 6th grade. It's meaty and a nice transition into textbooks.
  12. I just went through this with my 7 yod. I used SM with my older two but, my little one was really struggling conceptually. So, I had her take the CLE placement test, tons of review and drill. She placed into the second half of grade one. I was happy she hadn't lost much ground. We did three of them before going back to SM alongside CLE. Great fit, shes doing well.:001_smile:

  17. We were go through the, grass is greener on the other side, baloney. I told my dd that work was work, and school is work. At home you have the liberty to jump in your bed and do math, do science while snacking, run out side for fresh air, take time off when your overwhelmed. She was dying to go to school and wanted to see it. We went for a tour, she saw a ton of her friends, they all waved from classes. She would be in a class of 208 with about 15-19 kids per class. The teachers were really nice, the computers and the smart boards were great. The graphics design class was amazing. She LOVED the science lab. They said they would allow her to take the 8th grade Alg. class(she tested into it). She would try - out for the soccer team, they have so much to offer. It was a wonderful time. We got in the car, and I said, "So what do you think?" She said," Thanks for taking me, but I'm all set. I want to stay home." She put on her MP3 player and we drove home. At supper my husband asked if she wanted to go to school, and she responded with, " The kids looked miserable, slouched in their chairs, they looked unhappy. I want to stay home, I'm to happy here to change that." Done, she wants to be home till HS and then go for another tour at the HS. :) Needless to say, my younger tend to default to the decisions my oldest makes, so they both want to stay home...lol
  18. I gave my dd a number line and taught it as the differences between the two numbers. Then it clicked, and she did fine.
  19. Oh well, if it just you then take yourself out of the pic....lol Is a tutor or a writing class an option? I just got the Writers Journey for my 11 year old, it looks really good. Sorry I misunderstood you:glare:
  20. I don't know, I take it from such a different perspective. I don't cook everyone's favorite meal at supper, but everyone has to eat their supper. I pick a solid program for writing, math, English whatever. Liking it or not liking it, is really not up for debate. If my kiddos knew every time they complained about a subject or the books for that particular subject, would prompt me to go find something else, I'd be in a lot of trouble :) I say this barring any learning disabilities and learning styles. I use a combination of math for each child, they do very well but complaining does not warrant a new curriculum. I feel the same about writing, it's not everyone's cup of tea. I have 3 kiddos all using IEW, and they master skills at their own pace but they are still obligated to write. They may not like a certain textbook, but as long as it's solid and they are doing well , then it stays for the year at the least. Have you looked at the One Year Adventure Novel for you story writer, that looks co cool, I will most likely use it for my ds in a couple of years. Some ideas could be: Attach the writing to their schoolwork. Write a 2 summaries this week on your History studies. DO a mini- research report on something from Science you are studying. Write and essay on a famous composer. I find many times they want to write about what they find interesting, seeing that they have to write about something;). If it's a specific skill you are trying to get them to learn narrative, descriptive, expository etc. How about using an outline template and they still get to use their own topic, I do this for my 7 and 10 year old. Good Luck!:D
  21. I was in a HST coma for about a week:glare:, but so well worth the effort!
  22. Yes and yes. But the plus has more features, so look at those to see if you would want them, if you end up liking basic.
