  1. Laura, do you know about this series and how it compares to LP? Is it on the same level as SYRWTLL?
  2. Does any man ever read an email longer than a sentence or two? This sounds like a TF (testosterone flowing) thing to me! ;)
  3. YMMV, but ringing groceries all day doesn't seem like the best use of human creativity and ingenuity IMHO. Automation is coming, whether we like it or not, and people would be wise to retool in preparation vs. trying to pretend it's still 1970.

  6. Does anyone know where I can get a Latin Prep Book 1? It looks like it is currently out of print. Does anyone have one they would like to sell? The workbooks still appear to be available, but I am not sure that we can do the workbooks without the main text.
  7. Do you have Patchwork? https://www.amazon.com/Mayfair-Games-MFG3505-Patchwork-Board/dp/B00RCCAPPE
  8. I have an anxiety disorder, and my oldest also shows signs of it. Agreeing with the others re seeing a psych for an eval. One experienced with gifted kids is a plus, but not required. Along with CBT and meds, if appropriate, another thing that I would suggest is finding a course in mindfulness meditation. I thought it was a bunch of woo when my shrink suggested it to me (a decade ago), but the science actually backs up its ability to alter the brain in positive ways.

  12. Just books for my oldest that I had in the wishlist. 1. Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones 2. The Island of Dr. Libris by Chris Grabenstein 3. Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson 4. A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd 5. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
  13. Thank you! I bought 5 books from my wish list. :)
  14. I think that it's pretty normal for a lot of kids to test differently than they generally perform -- for a lot reasons. I told my older DS that test taking is a skill in and of itself. Some people are just really awesome at taking tests, despite shallow knowledge; others may suffer from test taking anxiety and have a difficult time with assessments no matter how well they know the subject. I wouldn't be concerned if a 5 year old doesn't test well. But, I can imagine that it would be frustrating not to see her placed appropriately. If my middle schooler was still having difficulty with test taking, I would probably try to assist with teaching that skill set.
  15. My ex DH went to Stonybrook, then Claremont McKenna, then to Rice for his Master's, and taught history at West Point. He's currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. I mention it because I know that Stony Brook was having real financial difficulties a few years ago. I agree that this is a second tier list of U.S. boarding schools.
  16. I had a baby in Mexico. It was 110F with the heat index, but every Mexican asked me why I didn't have my baby wrapped in a blanket. :) I agree with the observation that Helicopter Moms are anyone who pays more attention to their kids, and Tiger Moms, anyone who pushes harder, than me. ;)
  17. Just got the test results this morning. Somehow he managed to qualify for the quantitative, even with the fraction fiasco, but barely missed the verbal cutoff. Oy vey. No idea how that happened. He finished the verbal in 10 minutes, so I suppose it's not surprising. But, he's normally really good at analogies. We will retest in the spring semester to see if we can get a more accurate verbal and quant score now that he has more familiarity with the test. Some other questions.. Now that the Explore test is gone, what are people using to qualify the early elementary crowd for DYS? Do they take the Aspire above level? The DYS website still seems to only list Explore scores. Also, do people generally try to qualify for more than one program -- like CTY plus Duke TIP, etc. Just trying to figure out what opportunities are available for camps and online classes, as he really likes both.
  18. I've also liked the short stories in the Mosdos literature series.
  19. I use Athenas, CTY Young Readers, Mensa, Newbery, and Bookshark to come up with reading lists. I also pay attention to recommendations here, and add books to Goodreads or Audible as they come up.
  20. I just wanted to thank you all for your advice and experience. My husband and I had a chance to talk it over, and you all were very influential in our discussion. :) We decided to require my DS to practice before having access to electronics. I suppose that this should have been a given, but we were lax on enforcement. No longer! To clarify, my son enjoys playing guitar, and doesn't mind practicing. He is just 7, and will forget about practicing if he is playing outside or with his electronics. Annoyed by this fact, my husband decided that, if my DS forgot to practice more than 20% of the time, we would stop paying for lessons. This is where I stepped in, and told my husband that he was being unrealistic -- hence my OP. Practice has increased since more strictly enforcing this policy, but I appreciate all the insight that you have given to my husband and I. We will definitely be enrolling my son in a summer rock band camp, so that he also gets the chance to play with others, and I will start paying more attention to his lessons and practices. Thank you all again!
  21. Test was this morning. I am not optimistic. He finished the verbal in 10 minutes and came out of the math saying thay he didn't know what all the slashes were. Me: You mean like greater than, less than? S: No. Me: You mean like does not equal? S: No, like x/y. Me: You mean a fraction? S: Ooooh, is that what that was. I thought fractions were like X - Y Me: <Bangs head on desk.> And this is from the kid who says to the test administrator, "I hope it has exponents. I like exponents." /HomeschoolMomFail

  23. I live in California and voted for this proposition. I'm very glad that we are doing something about this issue on a statewide basis. Hopefully, other states will follow suit. As a boater, we often see the effects of all this plastic in the water. It's a huge problem around the world.
  24. My son actually liked to patch, so I specifically asked the ped oph if he could do damage by patching for more than the alloted time. She told me that he could not, so YMMV.
