  1. Well, since it is the daughter and her friend that are the Medical rooms, it seems that they would have to stay and the scared girl would move. One idea would be to spend lots of time outside the room but in the dorm. I am sure DD is good at reading when people are happy to see a dog. Maybe she could find someone that would be willing to room with her dog. I am one of those that would be overjoyed to room with an off-duty service dog. If they find a volunteer, seems like it would help. If I were your daughter, I wouldn't spend much time in my room. I certainly wouldn't install a doggie gate until after the scared girl moved out. You want the scared girl to be vocal about wanting to move. If they used the doggie gate, I can see how scared girl would be really pleased with the situation. Not only would the dog not be in the common area, but there would be less people in the common area.
  2. A work friend who is a fellow audiobook nut just recommended this to me. It is amazing! When people in the book are making music, the audiobook has the music! Plus, it is on Audible Plus (so free). There is also a Book 2 and Book 0.5. One thing funny, DD was at Camp Grandparents and I recommended that book to her on Skype. Stupid autocorrect changed it to "Just Sick".
  3. For breakfast I'd do a breakfast casserole at least one morning. You want stuff good and hot but also not labor intensive. There is also the balance of labor-intensive vs. budget. People and teens in particular will load up on the meat if given free choice. For example, I'd considered self-catering my wedding. A good friend of mine is a wedding photographer and I asked him. His favorite that he's seen was fajitas. People would get the fajita pre-cooked in the frozen section of Costco or Sam's. Then put a normal amount of the meat inside a tortilla, roll, then wrap each in Al. Foil. The beforehand just heat in a couple of the big roasters. He said if people served the meat themselves one person would put a pound of meat on their plate.
  4. For front loaders it is helpful every now and then to remove the soap residue. The products you can buy to do that are harsh. Instead I get double-duty. Once every now and then for a towel only load after I do a regular wash, I'll do a super-hot load with vinegar instead of soap.
  5. I once saw a parody of LOTR that really captured it. Others will probably recognize which one I'm talking about. It was hysterical because the parody would be them describing something and then "walk walk walk walk walk" There is a lot of walking around that makes it good for falling asleep.
  6. I have the same rule. I learned my lesson with the Unfortunate Events series. We started out listening to it, then watched some of the TV series. Then I couldn't get her to finish the book series because she said "Why? I'd rather just watch it" Interesting news on the Brandon Sanderson series. I am reading all of his stuff now. Generally whether it is ebook or audiobooks depends on which version the library has, but for that they have both. Since I read before bed, I also don't like to ebook read anything upsetting. So no Dean Koontz on ebook. When I finish Mistborn series I was going to start on the Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians. I had been leaning towards ebooking it, but now I'll do the audiobook.
  7. Nothing is certain yet. But, it is looking like the long version is really mono which was triggered. Mono is something we have more experience with. If you've had mono and/or knew someone who has, the duration depends largely on your activity level, particularly early on. Ignoring it and going about your life means it will be around for a long time.
  8. To answer the title of the question, I see one use for masking. A good friend of mine with bad lungs and allergies said that cloth masking while outdoors has helped her pollen allergies. Has anyone actually sneezed inside a mask? I did once, it was disgusting. I had the kleenex right there, but both getting the kleenex and removing the mask was too much to do in that short of time. One thing that really jumped out at me in the second post was hating to quarantine. I hope no one actually thinks you don't have to quarantine if you wear a mask. What was probably meant was that not getting sick means you don't have to quarantine. I think that the changed the definition of who needs to stay home when sick and for how long might be a long-term benefit to our society. It used to be that only the person that was sick stayed home and even then sometimes only if there was a fever and even then only until they felt better if it was at least two to three days after symptoms. The new definition seems to be that everyone in the family stays home for at least a week. THIS is what will slow the spread of disease.
  9. Hands down, best option is World War Z. I'm not even into the zombie thing, but a friend said I had to listen to it. The amazing thing is that major league actors voice their characters. I'd listen to it and think, "That can't really be so-and-so" Yup, it was. When I say actors voice Their characters, I mean it. The author is Max Brooks and he knows these actors because he's Mel Brooks son. He wrote the characters is if the actor was really in that situation so the dialogue is what they would naturally say. Plus, good story.
  10. Adding these, particularly since you will need lots of suggestions since your kids have probably read many already. How to Train Your Dragon series Eion Colfer's Artemis Fowl series, oh wait someone already said this one. My daughter re-listens to the Land of Stories series
  11. I love Zenni. I was once chatting to someone whose name you'd recognize from fashion. (I'm not involved in fashion, just a weird situation) He gave me a complement on my prescription sunglasses from Zenni. The shape is good for my face and not one sunglasses normally come in. My script is high enough that I'm limited in the contact lens selections because most aren't made that high. I once wanted to buy spare frames because my glasses lenses are so expensive and the frames break first. That wasn't an option so I bought one set with the cheapest standard lenses, and another with the most expensive. I couldn't tell them apart. I think since they didn't have my script in the cheap ones, they just upgraded the second set for free. ETA: As someone pretty blind, shopping for frames online is so much better. In the store I literally can't see myself with the other frames. I tried with contacts but back then they made my eye color darker.
  12. Another idea from server farms. Dual locations far apart. Copies of our super important documents are at my parents house about 1.5 hours drive away. I should probably send another copy to my aunt much farther away. If something was big enough to effect both my house and my aunts, documents won't be a concern anymore.
  13. I was just looking to see if the library had that. So far I'm batting zero. But maybe it is worth an audible credit?
  14. After I posted, I read "The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo." Fascinating read, but then I'm a fan of Dumas. His dad was a total bad-ass.
  15. That sounds rough. Just an innocent observation from someone that hasn't been in this situation, wouldn't having the daytime aides provide protection? They would see that there isn't abuse. Of course, people can start frivolous legal action and cause someone to spend lots of money defending themselves. Also, if your mother doesn't take her grandmother in, what will be happen? Another idea, could you or your mom call Adult Protective Services preemptively?
  16. That is very helpful. DD has done a bit of Scratch with the Lego Robotics. I do scripting for my job, so I can assist DD with programming logic. I think I'll also follow along with her class.
  17. I'm happy for her. I'd be surprised if she did the normal post-doc then medical practice route. She'll have time to get another post-doc degree. Or, if she sticks with her current plans, She'll be 18-19 when she finishes medical school and that is very much old enough to join the military.
  18. Years ago with a large group of friends renting a beach house for a long weekend I'd fall asleep on the couch every afternoon. I didn't really have a bed to go to. One evening at the beach, they were talking about this screaming fight that a couple had. I said, "What are you talking about?" They said, "You were in the room." Turns out it happened while I was napping and everyone thought I was just pretending to still be asleep. I was working 80 hours/week at the time and I really really needed my sleep.
  19. I am easy-going when it comes to narrators. Maybe it because I started listening to them behind my dad back when you had to prove a sight problem to check them out at the library. BUT, the narrator for Patricia Cornwell drives me bonkers. Every k is its own syllable. She is literally the only one I can't tolerate.
  20. I was thinking for the middle school level. She is 12 and will be 8th grade.
  21. Mistborn series! By Brandon Sanderson. I've heard some fantasy fans say that it will be one of the classic epic series. The first book is longer than 8 hours but you'll want to finish it. You can tell he is an author that reads a lot. He writes books that he'd like to read. There is a lot going on in the books, but they don't drag. That series isn't classified as a YA novels. But there isn't anything in them that would be a problem for my sensitive12-year-old DD. ETA: Also, if you library has an overdrive account, the first book will likely be there and therefore free. Otherwise, Audible has it.
  22. Maybe that is why I don't do sarcasm? Early childhood was Minnesnowda. Just recently I answered a question straight and the person I was talking to thought I was making a joke and being sarcastic. I said, "I don't so sarcasm." He thought I was still being sarcastic. It went on for a bit until someone else that knew me had to pipe up and say, "No, really, she doesn't do sarcasm."
  23. Mine is sniffling. I hate that! Just blow your dang nose! DD does it and I don't know where she got that since neither DH or I do that. It has been a constant battle but she is getting better.
