  1. I posted to the other thread regarding this this morning. The answer is: as long as there has been photography, and before that they had artists' renderings. There were news photographs of the dead from the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in 1911, on the side walk and in the morgue they set up at the docks. There were photos of people jumping to their death, as well. We simply have endless 24 hour news venues now. Then, it was the paper.
  2. 2 black (one cotton, one convertible), 2 gray cotton, 1 beige, 1 white convertible, 1 strapless white, 1 strapless beige, 1 lacy purple affair from VS that contorts the b00ks into such a strange shape that every one of the others have to be dirty to the point of unwearable for me to reach for it. So 8 for wearing and one for weeping. Well, and then the sports ones (2 black jogging ones, and an assortment of colors that are for freedom of movement when I teach Pilates, etc.) but I tend to think of those as "work clothes".
  3. I think that's true. I wonder if we (as a society) are becoming desensitized to violence more because violence as sport is so ubiquitous than because of media images of the dead.
  4. Yes, she really is. But OMG are those SHOULDER PADS?!?! Ugh. I hated the 80s fashion.
  5. Hmmm. I know that there are newspaper photos of people jumping out of windows, lying on the sidewalk and in the makeshift morgue from the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in 1911. So I would guess that it's been done as long as there has been photography. It's just that the photography wasn't all that great then. Before that, there were drawings.
  6. These Pumpkin Cream Cheese muffins are like crack. I had a friend who would wrap them individually and hide them in the bottom of her freezer so her husband (who doesn't eat bread or cake of any kind) wouldn't find them. They keep well, even outside the freezer, but won't last long. Hmmm. I wonder if I can gluten-free them.
  7. I keep bed linens in an antique dresser in the upstairs hallway. Hats, mittens, etc are kept in another one in the foyer (by the under-the-stairs coat closet).
  8. I agree. I have no problem excusing people when they make a poor judgment, are thoughtless, inadvertently offend or hurt someone. Cold manipulation and personal attacks are done on purpose, and (in my mind) not forgiven unless there is some sort of acknlowdgement/contrition. And if a person feels entitled to manipulate or attack me (or others) on a continuing basis, they have to be removed from our daily lives.
  9. I'd put the mattresses on the floor, and revamp the way you normally settle them to accommodate the new freedom (which you will have to do anyway, since E can climb out). And probably put in some surveillance. (the Joyful Abode blog has an excellent solution for a video monitor.) Toddlers are HARD. Just when you find your footing, they make a new developmental leap. Sigh.
  10. Yep, that. I stopped when they stopped being round-the-clock nurslings so, around three.
  11. Bet you could find one on eBay or at the thrift store right about now. ;)
  12. Shutterfly does fine work. Honestly, we've used the Walgreens upload and pick up at the store and it's been fine, too. (worked great because the local store is 24hr, so my husband picked up at 4:30 am on his way to work) Walmart does the same (I know not everyone has a Walgreens but Walmart is ubiquitous.)
  13. Oh! Ack! Read-alouds. I hate that, too. Not that it's not a worthy pursuit, I just don't like to read aloud. And my kids aren't so crazy about hearing read-alouds, either. We all love audiobooks, though.
  14. Not so much, here. Sure, I knit and sew. From patterns. I follow directions. Ok. But "write a <genre> about something <very general topic>"? Fate.worse.than.death. I can write, but I need to have something to say. I can't come up with something to say so I can write a poem/drama/haiku. I cannot even say how ecstatic I was when I read Susan's thoughts this year -WTM or WWSkill, I can't remember... Or maybe it was the WWS video, even - that everybody needs expository writing, but creative writing should be reserved for those so inclined. <queue choir of angels> (and then I noticed in the video that her books all have spine tags and thought that was so clever I had to tag and organize our books. I love that Susan. She's clever and sensible.)
  15. Yup. Cheap tuna, olive oil, cereal, treats, fruit, coffee... (not all TJs carry wine)
  16. No, I meant Sally Forth, but Mary Worth would also fit that genre. Sally Forth is just a more contemporary riff on the theme.
  17. 1. Yes, and I think your husband is correct, though Space Oddity may be one of those points of cultural literacy our children should be aware of. 2. Judge Parker would fall into the genre of strips like Sally Forth for me. I think they're a comic strip version of the old radio serials. I like old radio serials, but don't feel like they translate well to comic strips. 3. :svengo:
