  1. We sleep late then go to IHOP for a "not back to school" breakfast/brunch. This year school starts the same day as choir so it'll be a short day.
  2. Was it something like this? http://www.marthastewart.com/259419/black-licorice-creme-brulee-tarts
  3. Just ordered my 2nd study guide for English and the Biology book we'll be using this fall. Only 2 more things to buy and those are both DLs so I'm not in a hurry.
  4. I haven't had success getting into the LJG books either. He just doesn't interest me on his own. I do have Scottish Prisoner but I haven't read it yet and only wanted it b/c of Jamie.
  5. I like a good tart key lime or lemon icebox pie in the summer, but it would all depend on the flavors offered as to which one is pick from both options.
  6. Back to books... Time Between Us turned out to be a sample. I've no idea how it got on my kindle but I was disappointed. I read The Cowboy's E-mail Order Bride instead. Now I think I need to look for a decent mystery. Ya know, the one thing I hate about kindle books is that it doesn't let me read a summary of the book directly in kindle.
  7. My mom is from the north and loves rhubarb. I only remember not liking the "purple celery" but that crumble recipe makes me curious about trying it again as an adult. I'm sure I can find rhubarb somewhere in Houston if I look hard enough. Right? Now that licorice brûlée recipe, oh please do share! DS and I absolutely LOVE licorice.
  8. Glad the kittens are here! Looking forward to the pics.
  9. I love the audiobooks. I got all of them on Audible back in October and worked my way through the series. I feel the need to confess that I haven't started reading MOBY yet. I don't want to be done reading it knowing that I'll have years and years to wait for the next one. At least we have the tv show to look forward to next month.
  10. I haven't read it either, but it doesn't sound like something I'd like. Unless I skip all the history bits. Beautiful x-stitch Shawn!
  11. Our local p.s. course catalog lists Economics as "the study of the basic principles of economics with emphasis on the components and benefits of the free enterprise system." The AP Eco course is listed as "a study of macroeconomics taught at the college level." That sounds similar to what I remember my own Eco class as being like in high school. I remember we played a stock market game; the rest is vague b/c I hated the class. For us, we'll be doing consumer math first (using consumermath.org) which will also cover personal finance, but I consider personal finance courses and economics courses to be mostly different.
  12. I love them! I need to find some that are closer to knee length and in a fabric appropriate for a business casual dress code. Might be time to find a pattern and dig my never-used sewing machine out of the closet.
  13. It's pretty easy reading so I'd think it would be fine if your DC understands what he or she is reading. Have you viewed the sample pages on the Notgrass website?
  14. :bigear: Following this thread since we're looking for one too. Are these by themselves enough for a 1 semester course on the basics?
  15. Having waist-length hair myself, I'd insist on regular trims. My stylist suggests trims be done quarterly to keep long hair looking nice. I'd never force a child to cut their hair though. When I was 8, my mom hated the fuss I'd put up over having my bum-length hair brushed or braided. She threatened to cut it if I didn't take care of it myself. I was 8 and really couldn't take care of it by myself, nor did she take the time to properly teach me to do so, and followed through with the threat to cut my hair. Except she did it herself instead of taking me to a professional. Epic.Fail. I ended up with an ear-length bob. I was depressed and embarrassed and so very glad I was spending the summer away from home so it would grow back out before school started. I also never got over it and just thinking about it fuels resentment against her for it, even though my hair is now (32 years later) almost as long as it was back then.
  16. She probably did! I admit that I googled trying to find a picture of the one she was wearing. It looked quite cute on her - solid black, mid-thigh shorts with short sleeves and a lattice type design across the top. Cute but modest, and she couldn't have been more than 14 or 15.
  17. DS20 was easy. He dated his true love once just before she moved away - a trip unchaperoned to the movies. He had two girlfriends over the next 1.5 years but never went on a date with them and only saw them at church or school, respectively. Then he and true love got back together and maintained a long distance relationship for the next 2.5 years until she moved home. A year later they were married and are still very happy and doing well. DS16 has had one girlfriend that he met at church. He asked permission first, as she had to her parents, and he asked her dad for permission to date his daughter. They went out several times but all of the dates were chaperoned by a parent. They broke up and she's dating someone else now (he's not) but are still friends. I'm not encouraging DS to date b/c we feel the purpose of dating is to find your spouse and you shouldn't date someone you can't see yourself marrying. So really they would be friends for a while first and then start dating once they felt they knew each other well enough.
  18. Yesterday I finished Anne of Green Gables. It was one of the books on my "how have I not read this yet" list. I did enjoy it but I don't know I'll continue reading the series. I read a summary of the other books and I think it was enough to satisfy my curiosity. Finishing Anne puts me right at 50% of my 52 book goal though. :) Working on the devotional You Are Loved but I think I'd be better off just sitting and reading straight through instead of doing a chapter a week with the bible study. I started using a random number generator to pick the next dusty book on Kindle. It picked time between us for me, a YA time-travel romance. Seems like a decent enough waste of a couple of hours. I also have Diana Gabaldon's newest book, Written In My Heart's Own Blood, tucked away in my dresser. I've caught up by re-reading the first 7 novels but I'm hesitant to start this one knowing book 9 is years and years away.
  19. So, at the grocery store this afternoon I saw a teenage girl in a black romper similar to the one in the OP. I resisted the urge to giggle and snap a photo though.
  20. I saw an entire rack of denim short overalls earlier this week when I was shopping. I just shuddered at the thought, but the dress the OP linked is cute. I wouldn't wear it now but if I had a DD, I'd buy it for her if she wanted.
  21. I'm so very glad I'm not alone. DS didn't get serious about doing school work until March or so, and I feel like we've been trying to catch up ever since. We have 10 lessons and 2 exams left in science, 1 book to read for history, and 3 movies and a poetry unit to do for english. I scheduled him for 1/2 day of work with a goal is to be finished by Aug 1 so we get at least a couple weeks without school. He says he wants to work longer so he finishes earlier, but he hasn't put that into practice yet.
  22. You could start off with a clear mascara just to get back in the habit of wearing it. Lately I've been using Maybelline Volum' Express in brown/black. I like that it has 2 different brushes for lower/upper lashes. A friend of mine swears the best eye makeup remover she's ever found is a homemade one using olive oil and witch hazel.
  23. We're still finishing up this year but start the new school year 8/25. All high level planning is done and I'm slowing buying what I need. Government and parts of English are finished since I already had the books or pulled it from online. I'll finish the rest as my books come in. A lot of what we plan to use this year will come pre-planned and I only need to customize it to fit DS's needs and our schedule.
  24. Have you checked into the DIVE CDs for Saxon? http://www.diveintomath.com/dive-math/ We never used Saxon (although I probably would have if I'd known right off about these CDs) but we love them for Science. They're made to teach directly to the student and Dr. Schormann is available via email to answer questions.
