  1. Same here. I fix him healthy, nutritious meals that he will eat. My son is so small that he is not even on the ped's growth chart. I just can't let him go hungry. But I definitely don't feed him junk. I just got the book The Sneaky Chef (on the recommendation from this board) and she has LOTS of good ideas on making meals more nutritious but palatable to kids. For a non-sensory kid, you might try that.
  2. Asheville, NC - the mountains are beautiful, there is so much to do (for families or for couples) and the vegetarian restaurants are unbeatable. :001_smile:
  3. Dh and I are HUGE Lost fans. My brother lives in Hawaii and went fishing with someone from the cast. He doesn't watch the show and so couldn't tell me WHO. Aaagghhh. I want to know the scoop! :D
  4. This is what gets me. Once they started advertising products ON their show I was pretty much disgusted.
  5. www.letsgolearn.com It's not free but it is pretty in depth and provides lexile and other scales as well. We have used the DORA test and the DOMA test for math. Here's a link to a thread I started about it awhile back: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46962
  6. I am excited for you! What type of goats do you have? We vaccinate and worm regularly, but don't drink our goat's milk so I don't know about how that would affect it. I have found the site www.goattalk.com to be very informative. We have nigis and they are my beloved pets.
  7. I voted "other" because while our chocolate lab is a princess and must be around her people at all times, she is trained not to go in ds's room. She gets to run and play outside in our big, fenced yard but when we are in she wants to be in, also.
  8. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I wish there was still rep so I could rep each of you. I'm off to the library to find these...
  9. We have used both Life Science and Earth and Space. I really liked the way she provides a list of all materials required for the year, an outline of the program that highlights the big and small ideas covered, and very extensive correlated reading and website lists. It is a very well organized program. We enjoyed the Life Science better than the Earth and Space. The experiments were doable for a first grader and I felt he learned a lot. We had a little more trouble with Earth and Space. With a lot of the weather experiments we couldn't get the "correct" results and they were hard for my young student. I ended up supplementing a lot with a Dinah Zeke book called Earth Science. I found R.E.A.L. Earth and Space to be more dry (as pp mentioned) - less hands-on, get dirty - than Life. We like "hands-on, get dirty" at my house. HTH.
  10. Ds is borderline ADHD and I need to learn more about it from a parent/home educator perspective. TIA.
  11. Long underwear under all the layers helps me. Also I wear thick socks and house shoes. And I do lots of baking. At least the kitchen is warm!
  12. My father in law died about 6 years ago. It was a very difficult time and is sort of a blur to me. I think this is huge. Keeping things going is the best thing you can do. He probably needs more time to grieve. I think when a man loses his father it changes him forever. There is a book out there - Father Loss, I think it is called. It might help provide you with some insight into what he is experiencing. It also might be helpful for your husband to spend some time around someone who has experienced a similar loss. Seeing someone who has come through it could provide comfort for him. :grouphug:
  13. Quick and easy black bean soup over rice. I better get crackin'.
  14. My ds is a chatterbox and he will answer the phone if I don't hear it or get to it. Once he answered the phone and somehow told his cub scout leader that his mom and dad were both in the shower. Dh was in the shower and I was at work. Cub leader (a mom of 5 boys) and I had a good laugh about that one later. Yeah, I'd say we should probably work on phone etiquette also.
  15. That is big! My banty eggs are smaller than that - what's weird is that we have two little identical hens and one lays much bigger eggs than the other. Banties and their eggs are cute. :)
  16. So true! I wear makeup only on special occasions, like when I was in my brother's wedding. My anniversary is this week, I'll probably get a little dolled-up for a nice dinner out.
  17. I buy pillows at Kmart - they hold up nicely and are cheap. My mom has found some really nice pillows for a low price at Tuesday Morning.
  18. You could get dairy goats and make soap and cheese to sell along with the milk. You do need good fencing, though, and barbed wire wouldn't work.
  19. I've got one to add: Kentuscan Bean Soup from Snug Hollow B & B 1/4c butter 3T chopped garlic 2T rubbed sage 1 - 2 t rosemary 2T tamari soy sauce 3T nutritional yeast 2C water or veg broth 3 cans great northern beans In a large saucepan, melt the butter and add the herbs and garlic. Let mixture cook slowly for a few minutes. Add the soy sauce and yeast and stir until well mixed. Add broth and beans and simmer until the cornbread you'll serve on the side is done baking. Yum.
  20. That is such a hard question because there have been so many talented people on SNL. If I HAD to pick just one as my favorite it would be Will Farrell.
  21. I watched Iron Man with dh last night. I found myself continually being shocked that it was rated PG-13. There were scenes with torture, bombings, shootings, people on fire, etc. I guess because there was no bad language or nudity it wasn't rated R. I didn't like it because I found it to be incredibly sexist.
  22. My boy's favorite subject is history. Hands down. I think it is my favorite right now also. Thanks SWB :).
