  1. I just did this today! My neighbor brought me a huge basket full of fresh corn. I husked the corn, blanched it in boiling water for 7 min, plunged it in icy cold water and then cut the kernels off and froze them in meal-sized batches. This is my first try at this but that is what it says to do in the book Preserving Summer's Bounty. I gave the husks/silks to the goats and the cobs to the chickens and now we are all happy! I think you can also freeze it on the cob after a short blanching. Good luck!
  2. We haven't yet hit the $100 mark. We have a small, well-insulated house and keep the thermostat at around 78 degrees.
  3. I just think they are the greatest dogs, hands down :D. Great with kids, very smart and eager to learn (trainable), calm (as adults) yet playful, loyal, handsome! I could go on and on... LOL! I agree with the shelter idea, though, so maybe you could find a lab or lab mix there that needs a home?
  4. Wall-E! We saw it at the drive-in down the road from my house. Perfect summer experience. :D
  5. It has been a looooong time since I used half.com so I may be rusty but can you contact the seller? I guess it might depend on how much you paid for the book if you want to go to the trouble of returning it. I do recall that I purchased a book and was sent the wrong one, I notified the seller and they sent me the right book and told me not to worry about returning the first one. The best resolution it seems would be to get your money back or at least a partial refund since the book was obviously misrepresented. I would hold off on the neg feedback until you are sure the seller won't resolve the problem properly.
  6. I am having the exact same problem with my recently turned 7 ds. I am going to look into this alarm others have mentioned. I talked to our ped about this at his annual visit and he said to keep a daily log of what ds eats and drinks. He says there may be a dietary trigger that we could be determined by comparing the diet journal with the incidents of bedwetting. I haven't tried it yet. I'm glad to know that this is pretty common.
  7. They may have the right to withhold that information but more importantly, you have the right to find another doctor! Most doctors like to display their degrees in their office, one that doesn't would make me very leery.
  8. I'm so glad you posted this, I've been thinking about getting it for ds but the reviews on Amazon were mixed. I'm glad you guys like it - I might just pick up a copy today!
  9. DS7's favorite things to do (according to him) are: build and play legos read books draw with crayons and markers play with figures (knights, horses, soldiers, etc.) go for long walks (while wielding a sword, of course)
  10. That's terrible, I am so sorry! Do you have an incubator for her eggs? At least if you can hatch them he'll have companionship with the chicks.
  11. The company that my dad works for is responsible for recovering the charges for books taken out and not returned. They are like a collection agency for library fees! I am always so frustrated when I need/want a book that is deemed LOST but then I think - "Dad'll get em!" :001_smile:
  12. I'm totally stumped... I usually have the opposite problem with zucchini. Does the plant look healthy and green and not bug-eaten? The biggest problem I've had with zucchini are the squash-vine borers.
  13. I think it's harder for people to view your profile on Facebook than on MySpace. I think a lot depends on the privacy settings you place on your profile, either site. I prefer Facebook because there aren't so many flashy, racy ads and videos and stuff. I don't consider either site "safe" really.
  14. I have a clear plastic, over the door shoe rack that hangs on the inside of a large cabinet door. The pockets are filled with scissors, rulers, glue, 3x5 cards, pencils, markers (washable down low, sharpies up high :)). You can place small kids drinking cups in pockets for holding writing utensils and keeping things sorted. For papers, I am a 3-ring binder fanatic.
  15. This tragic event has been devastating to dh and me. We have always felt that our church was a safe haven where we could go and be ourselves and worship without being judged. That someone would breach that sanctuary in such a brutally violent way is chilling. Our hearts are with the UU families in Knoxville that are suffering.
  16. For a cookbook that includes quick, wholesome and easy recipes that you're whole family might just enjoy check out Better than Peanut Butter and Jelly by Wendy Muldawer & Marty Mattare. Many of the recipes are things she could make herself if she has some basic cooking skills. FYI I am veg and I rarely eat tofu unless at a restaurant prepared by an expert. :)
  17. We buy distilled or spring water for drinking because our tap water is not trustworthy. I just discovered that our favorite brand, sitting next to all the other gallon jugs on the shelf and costing the same, is 3 quarts not 4.
  18. My dh is a paramedic. Right now he works for two different municipal emergency medical services and at the ER of the local university hospital/trauma center.
  19. I second the Frazier recommendation and... In Louisville, (and right down the street from the Frazier) the Louisville Science Center is a great hands-on museum with an Imax theatre. www.louisvillescience.org In Indianapolis, Conner Prairie is a living history museum. It is huge and filled with volunteers who make the experience truly memorable. www.connerprairie.org In Chicago, the Art Institute is one my favorite places ever. www.artic.edu Hope this helps. Have a great, safe trip.
