  1. Exactly this. I did this last year. I told the parents the schedule we would be covering and they could read or not. In class, I gave a brief summary of the girl we were studying and then we did a craft/activity.
  2. I have 2 DDs that we adopted from China. Older DD (now 9) was adopted when she was 21 months old. She has always had defiance issues. It turns out, she has anxiety issues easily traceable to abuse she suffered before her adoption. She also had surgery as a baby and probably had very little pain meds and attention from her caregivers. Also, she has a cleft lip and palate, which has resulted in many surgeries and orthodontic treatments. After many years of counseling and now (a low dose of) anxiety meds, it's clear that her anxiety manifests itself as control. When she feels out of control, she lashes out - physically and emotionally. It has been a loooooooong road with her, but I feel like we are making progress. Of course, as she enters her preteen years and tend years, Lord help us all!!!!! I've been telling DH that we need to start installing the window locks upstairs now!!! LOL Oh, she did go to a private preschool when she was 4, but I have homeschooled her since then. We started homeschooling because her older brother had needs that weren't being addressed appropriately in public school. Once he was home, I knew it only made sense to bring all the kids home. I was SURE DD would resent it if he was at home with me and she was in school. But it turns out that homeschooling is best for her, anyway. Please feel free to ask any questions. I know this was a bit disjointed!
  3. Changes in RED Also, here are our Morning Time plans - all 3 kids together (2nd, 4th, and 6th grades): Geography - 50 States and Where to Find Them Poetry, Shakespeare, Inventors, Hero Tales Nature Study
  4. I am so, so sorry you are in this situation. It sounds so hard on so many levels.
  5. We have a Facebook Group. We also send out important stuff to everyone by email.
  6. Definitely get the blood patch. I had the headache after DS was born from my (failed) epidural.
  7. My DH doesn't take any meds at all. He has an occasional soda - usually regular Coke. But that's it.
  8. This drives me INSANE. One of these days, DH is going to find me in a fetal position in the corner mumbling about how the Heated Dry cycle on our new dishwasher doesn't actually DRY anything.
  9. I'm a big fan of sandwiches, or cold cut assortments with pickles and olives. DH doesn't care for that plan at all!!!! Pesto Chicken - Spread jarred pesto on chicken and bake until chicken is done. Then melt mozzarella cheese on top. YUM. I have a skillet that is a grill pan and I have been known to "grill" chicken in that and then finish it off in the oven for about 15 minutes. I sprinkle the chicken with seasoned salt or lemon pepper seasoning or whatever I feel like.
  10. We have an Urgent Care clinic that is open on Saturdays, so that will definitely be on tomorrow's agenda if we don't go in tonight.
  11. DD9 was diagnosed with strep Wednesday night. She got one dose of Amoxicillin that night. So we are at about 48 hours now. She is still running a 102 fever. It goes down with Tylenol or Motrin, although it comes back up about an hour before it's time for more meds. She also says her throat hurts worse than it did that first day. Poor kid is pretty miserable. She's also not eating or drinking much because her throat hurts too much. At what point would you call the doctor or go back in? I'm thinking tomorrow morning if she's not any better? Strep worries me because the complications can be intense, but I know we need to give the abx time to work.
  12. We haven't used that one, but we've used a couple of her other ones. I really like her stuff.
  13. In VA, the cutoff is Sept. 30. Red shirting is allowed and is fairly common.
  14. Coconut anything. The smell, the texture, can't stand it. Cheesecake. Cooked fruit - like apple pie, cobblers - fruit is supposed to be cold, fresh, and raw.
  15. My plan for my DS this coming year for 6th grade is WWS1, finish Winston Grammar Basic, and just read tons of books.
  16. DD9 has had braces for around a year. When friends tell me their kids will only need them for a year or so, I just smile and nod. Cleft kids and orthodontia have a long relationship!!!!! DD7 will be getting her palate expander in the next few months.
  17. I have the PAL Reading AND Writing. But I was thinking about skipping the writing for now. I'm going to get this girl to read if it kills us both!!!!!
  18. I have 2 daughters from China with Cleft Lip and Palates. My older DD had her lip repaired in China. Everything else has been done here. I don't even remember how many surgeries they have had. DD9 - maybe 3? DD7 - 3, and she still has a big one to go maybe next year.
  19. DD just turned 7 and is not reading yet. She is VERY active - loves to dance, sing, pretty much anything involving movement. We have tried the following and she literally can't sit still long enough to do the lessons - AAR 1, Reading Eggs (this has been the best, but she still has to sit), Phonics Pathways, Progressive Phonics. She is motivated to read, but just has a hard time settling down long enough. I am ready to spend whatever $ I need to at this point, even though she's the last kid. (I am fairly certain there are no learning disabilities lurking.) Here's what I've been looking at: Logic of English Foundations A and B Sing, Spell, Read, and Write - 1st grade level PAL Reading - I have the teacher and student book of this one, but I'd need to buy the Phonetic Farm stickers and the Games book Is there anything else I should look at? I need something open and go.
  20. I take morning and evening meds and I am the WORST about remembering things. So my boxes stay on the corner of my dresser next to my daily jewelry. I take the morning ones after I shower and the evening ones just before bed. Definitely tie it to something he already does.
  21. Personally, I don't allow my kids on trampolines very often. Everyone has their own "thing" and this is mine. I do know that kids can get hurt doing anything - my friend's daughter broke her arm last week by tripping on something in their house and falling on her arm. I fell on our driveway yesterday and tore up my leg and foot.
  22. I tend to agree with this. I had one and yes, it confirmed reflux. Um, OK, I already knew that. Here's $800.
  23. Do you know the brand of these? They sound great!!!
  24. Right???? Aren't they amazing???? And they erase really well, too.
  25. Have you guys seen the new mechanical pencils with colored lead? I can color code my kids in my planner in PENCIL!!!!! https://www.amazon.com/Paper-Mate-Clearpoint-Mechanical-Assorted/dp/B01N5H8TD5
