  1. My DS is 10 and things generally come easy for him. He gets very frustrated and gives up quickly when something is hard. He will be middle school age next year and it's time for him to start shaping up and getting a grip. How can I encourage him to take more responsibility in his school work and just in general? At the same time. I don't want to go overboard and expect too much from him. Each Monday, I give each kid a spreadsheet with their work that needs to get done for the week. DS is great about getting it done and checking it off. I think maybe he needs some longer-term projects or reports or something. I hope that all makes some sort of sense.
  2. Great article. My DD struggles with anger, and her anger is a manifestation of severe anxiety. We have been fortunate to find therapists and doctors that recognized it quickly.
  3. Yes, it's 99 99s. Not 99 x 99. It's 99 x 99 x 99 x 99 x 99 x 99 ......... etc. The wording : the product of ninety-nine 99's : Here's my explanation. Product means you are multiplying, so the 's is the key. If it had said the product of 99 and 99, then, yes, the units digit would be 1. In the middle panel of page 60, they talk about multiplying an even number of 99s vs. an odd number of 99s.
  4. We are finishing up our 6th week of our school year. Picture Smart Bible: Seriously LOVE this. Even 10 y.o. DS, who hates to color LVES this!!! Elemental Science - Biology for the Logic stage: LOVE - so easy to adjust for each kid's level Wordsmith Apprentice: DS LOVES this Beast Academy: Love AAR: I really did not want to use this, but DD and I both seriously LOVE it. Winston Grammar: love Biblioplan: I was sure we were all going to love this. I like it ok, but all 3 kids hate it. :sigh:
  5. Our church uses the materials from Orange and we have for many years. I love, love, love it.
  6. I have the K-3 Picture Smart Bible New Testament. And I have 3 kids I'd like to use it with - ages 6, 8, and 10. I'm having trouble figuring out what using this with 3 kids looks like. Do you use it during a sort of Morning Time? How long does it take each day? And how long does it take you to get through each Book of the Bible? Thanks!!!
  7. A friend gave me some clothes for my DS and they are great. The only problem is that her teen boys left them in a dirty clothes hamper for months. They reek. I have washed them 3 times and tried vinegar in the rinse cycle. What else can I try?
  8. I'm not a huge fan of reading out loud, I will admit. I have been doing it because I do see some value in it. I'm not sure my kids like it. I allow them to play quietly while I'm reading, but then that morphs into leaving the room, or fighting with each other, or wrestling with the cat, etc. So does anyone homeschool, but not do any read-alouds?
  9. This sounds interesting. Do you have a link to the one you use?
  10. http://www.cursivelogic.com How does it compare to other cursive workbooks?
  11. I don't know. We have it set up for each kid and their own devices (iPad, Kindle Fire), but we set up our Laptop and Desktop computers as Family devices. I would bet you could find the answer on their website, or send them an email.
  12. We LOVE it. I haven't done much with the time limits, but the Bedtime feature is totally worth it!!!
  13. Do you happen to have ground flaxseed?
  14. Fleas suck. We are dealing with them for the first time ever. And our cats never go outside. 2 of my kids have literally hundreds of bites. We have tried DE (huge mess to clean up-will kill a regular vacuum cleaner quickly). We have the cats on Advantage and they seem to have no more fleas. I finally called a company and they treated our house and yard for $150. Honestly, I should have called them to begin with. My poor kids are going to have scars from all the flea bites :( And I rarely use chemicals in my house at all.
  15. Great advice so far. I am so sorry. We have been dealing with fleas in our house for almost 2 months. I have tried so. many. things. (Capstar and Advantage on the cats, natural spray, foggers in the house, diatomaceous earth in the house) I finally had an exterminator come out today. I should have called them earlier, but I was trying to save myself money. Ha! If this doesn't work, I will lose it. I normally don't use chemicals in my house, but after 2 months of 2 of my kids having hundreds of flea bites, we had to do something extreme. The crazy thing is that we have 2 indoor cats - as in, they never go outside. The fleas in our area have apparently been especially bad this year.
  16. Eating Gluten-free has almost completely gotten rid of my migraines. Other triggers for me are: weather changes, MSG, heat, and bright lights.
  17. Same boat here. My 10 year old DS will only wear all elastic waist pants. So we are stuck with athletic pants. He needs about a size 12-14 in the waist, but a size 10 for the length!
  18. We are new to Biblioplan, but we are not using the Companion. Instead, we are using SOTW 3 and lots of the recommended books. The Companion would be waaaaay too much for us.
  19. It totally depends on the doctors/dentists involved. My daughter is having her tongue tie repaired by her plastic surgeon, but that's only because she's having another surgery done, so he's just doing it all at the same time. If she hadn't needed the other surgery, I absolutely would have had our dentist do it with the laser. The laser is much quicker and an easier recovery.
  20. I like binding things because I like workbooks to lay flat. And I don't like the 3 rings being in the way.
  21. I had a brilliant idea today - although, in reality, I may be late to the party and maybe you all do this already! And if so, why has no one ever told me? I have several electronic curriculum books that I needed to print for my 3 kids. 2 of my kids are using a lot of the same ones. I color-coded each kid by printing the cover on their color paper and then laminating it. I also gave myself a color! It's so much easier to see which book belongs to which kid. And WHY have I never laminated the covers before? It really protects the cover and keeps it nice. SaveSave
  22. We have just started using Logic Stage Biology, and we like it. A good friend of mine locally used Logic Stage Chemistry last year and she and her kids LOVED it. I think you will find negative reviews about everything. You have to gather your information, make the best decision you can, and go for it. (I'm reminding myself of this, too! I'm such a second guesser.)
  23. I used to teach math in several public schools and we NEVER came close to finishing a textbook. I now teach math at a community college and we don't finish the books there, either!!!
  24. We have been in a co-op for a few years now. We just do the next thing each day. I do not try to squeeze 5 days of work into 4. We school year-round, with various breaks whenever we want or need one. We also tend to vacation during the traditional school year, so we take a week off here and there. I won't lie - it's hard to fit everything in. We also have lots of medical and counseling appointments to fit in. Some weeks, it just doesn't all get done.
