  1. I know the America Cancer Society takes donated wigs. I'd call your local branch and see what they say.
  2. Also, Journey to the Center of the Earth, the Brendan Fraser one from 2008. They're coming out with a sequel this year too. ETA: It looks like Rockhopper and I were posting at the same time :)
  3. I have this one that you clip to a book. I bought it 3 years ago, use it frequently, and it's still going strong. I just had to replace the batteries recently and it still had the original batteries in it! :)
  4. http://www.riddleme.net/ Neat software for treasure/scavenger hunts. It's so easy to make them up now and the kids love it. :)
  5. We don't have this one but we do have and love Jishaku which is similar, although it's a 2 player game.
  6. I love that she did this! Good for her :D She was on her local news too...http://www.wtae.com/video/28909394/detail.html
  7. I'm dress shopping right now too and was having a hard time finding anything with sleeves and that came below the knee. I stumbled across these stores and they have lots of cute, modest yet stylish dresses. :) http://www.sweetinnocencedresses.com/shop/sweetinnocence http://mikarose.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3 http://www.sierrabrooke.com/catalog.php?category=4
  8. Not sure how you feel about bugs as pets but we love our Giant African Millipede. It's very interesting to watch and by far the easiest pet we've ever had. Giant African Millipede by KatherineNaomi, on Flickr
  9. Hi, I'm so sorry for your diagnosis. I too was diagnosed with IDC back in June. I had a bilateral mastectomy and just finished my last chemo today! You're in the scariest part of your journey right now. Once you get your treatment plan in place you'll feel a lot better. I agree with the recommendation to check out the message board at breastcancer.org. It's a wealth of information and support. Hang in there. You can do this!! PS: Here's a pic I took today. Bald but happy! And to a speech I gave at a Breast Cancer Awareness luncheon last week. I hope my journey can inspire you a bit and show you that you can get through this with dignity and strength.
  10. I agree with many of the sentiments in this thread. I'm 34 and was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. I had a bilateral mastectomy and am currently undergoing chemo. I'm really torn about all the breast cancer awareness hype that's out there this month. I do love The Scar Project. Getting past the pink ribbons and such this is what breast cancer really looks like.
  11. I choose not to use filters for a few reasons. I don't want any loss of quality to my photos, I don't want to lose sharpness. Also, in the case of a drop or bump, the filter can shatter easily and end up scratching your lens. A lens hood is better alternative in my opinion. It's cheaper, recesses the front element making it much harder to scratch or break, plus it reduces lens flare. I do change my lenses often, I have 4 primes (35, 50, 85 and 105 macro) and 2 zooms (12-24 and 28-75) so I have a lot to choose from for any given situation.
  12. I don't use a filter either. Why buy an expensive lens and then put cheap glass in front of it? I do use a lens hood for protection though. As for a zoom I like something in the 28-75mm range. The 70-300 or 55-200 are ok for outside but would be really cramped for indoors.
  13. I agree. I'm 34 and was diagnosed two weeks ago with breast cancer (DCIS). It was not detected on either a mammogram or ultrasound. It was a surprise finding that was found upon the surgical removal of a benign tumor in my milk duct that was causing nipple discharge. Had the benign tumor not been there it probably would have taken years for my cancer to show up on a mammogram.
  14. You've gotten great advice. Just wanted to add that we love our laser printer. We had an inkjet previously and it ran out of ink all.the.time! We switched to a laser printer (monochrome, not color) and the toner cartridge lasted us for 2 years even with daily printing!! It's been so nice to be able to print freely without having to worry about ink levels. :)
  15. Ouch! Not feeling the upstate love here. :tongue_smilie: I'm from the central NY/Utica area and have lived here all my life and love it here. Yes the winters are long, about the end of November to the beginning of April, but it makes the summers extra sweet. There are lots of lakes and campgrounds and we're just a short drive up to the Adirondacks. It's centrally located so it's easy to do day trips to Albany, Rochester/Buffalo, Binghamton, Old Forge, etc. Yes, the taxes are a bit high but it enables my Family f 6 living on one income to have excellent state paid health insurance. As for homeschool reporting, it's really not that bad. We send in a letter of intent every year, then our IHIP. Every marking period we send in our quarterly that just lists the material we covered that quarter. For the end of the year assessment we choose to do the CAT-5 test. Our school district allows us to sign them out and administer them at home. Pretty easy. I was really nervous about the paperwork before we started but it's not bad at all. Sure I'd like to have less oversight but I haven't found the hoops to hard to jump through.
  16. Lol! I'm reviewing punctuation/capitalization with my 2nd grader. I could print this out and have him take a crack at it but I don't think I'll be that cruel!
  17. This exactly! Plus I had 3 kids and I figured it was probably about time I was 30. I did end up having a bonus baby at 32 so you never know what life may bring.
  18. Wow, so surprised to see so many fellow non-coffee drinkers! I usually feel like the only one around who doesn't like coffee.
  19. Lol, great thread! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with a showering impaired 9 year old. :)
  20. Just remembered, you can read a very good synopsis at Wikipedia and see what you think. :)
  21. My DH and I saw this show for the first time in NYC this winter. We loved it and would love to bring the big kids some day. I don't remember anything inappropriate or particularly scary. There were lots of kids in the audience too.
