  1. Ours is up. Link in sig. Latest member of the family hanging out grazing with our old timer guinea pig
  2. Ours is up! and I managed to put pictures of our dioramas!
  3. I got level 2 for my son at a used curriculum sale. I really think it would be great for him. He hates to draw "pictures" But he loves drawing using "tools" like rulers and compasses. I am having a hard time helping him with it though. There is no instruction on how to make the figures. There is simply one incomplete picture. Some of them are easy to figure out but others are very difficult. Is there any book or website that could help? Also I just noticed that in the back of the book there is one sheet of paper that is kind of like graph paper. I went back and read the directions but it says to make the diagrams on blank paper. What is the graph-like paper for? Should we be using that for the drawings? It looks like it could help to make the pictures correctly. Thanks to anyone who has any input about this program!
  4. I haven't, but thanks for the link. It looks really neat and inexpensive
  5. here is a great blog post by Harvey Bluedorn. I think he has a great point about delayed math instruction actually being beneficial. Note that I have not followed this method completely. We did informal math until age 8 and it seems to have helped my son be able to move more quickly now. Anyways, I guess I am just trying to point out that your 7 year old will be fine and that delaying math instruction can actually help the child to grasp it better and not hate math. http://www.triviumpursuit.com/articles/research_on_teaching_math.php
  6. week 2 is up here....We are easing in pretty slowly this year. :)
  7. We live in a small town where everyone knows each other. That's not to say that bad things couldn't happen here but I have allowed my son since he was about 7 (he is now 10) to go to the store (which requires crossing two streets) go to the skate park (during school hours when the punks aren't around) to go to the library and to ride a bike up the hill to a friend's house. I think it also has to do with the child though. My son is very careful and aware of his surroundings and takes it seriousky. My dd who is now 7 has been asking to do these things and there is no way I would let her go by herself. Maybe it also has to do with being a girl vs. a boy? Sounds silly..but it just doesn't resonate well with me for her where it felt natural for my son...Of course in our previous town there is no way I would have allowed either of them to go outside of our block...
  8. Another option is Community Bible Study..if your area has one. They have homeschool classes that are broken up by age group. And the great part is thta the kids study the same book as you so there is lots of discussion. The kid's workbooks are great. Look to see if you have one around you: http://www.communitybiblestudy.org/ Sorry, I just realized you are in Canada..But CBS is a worldwide thing so here is the canadian website: http://www.communitybiblestudy.ca/ editing for a third time! LOL...It appears from the website that Canada CBS doesn't offer the homeschool programs? That is a bummer. (Unless I am reading it wrong) Oh well, maybe the links will help someone. It is a great program...
  9. I am starting French this year with my dd7 and ds10. I wanted to also do Prima Latina but am concerned about their being confusion learning two languages at a time. (Even though one of them isn't really for the purpose of speaking) Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  10. Where do you see the price tag of $300? I am seeing far lower prices. Am I looking at the wrong thing? Here is the link I see: http://www.etahomeschool.com/search/searchdisplay?type=keyword&query=algeblocks&x=0&y=0
  11. My daughter, who loves Ramona books also really likes the Amber Brown series.
  12. yes, we got the Hands and Hearts Egypt history kit and they had us make a cute mummy guy by attaching an apple to an orange with a piece of wire. The kids removed the orange "guts" first so it was just like removing the organs of a person LOL then we wrapped him and decorated a coffin box for him. This was 3 years ago. I just saw him in my attic the other day. He is quite mummified still! Though I guess that is the point of mummification!;)
  13. 2 Corinthians 9:7 seems pretty clear to me. I don't know how it is constantly ignored: Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. If this is a legitimate post then all I can say is "Find a new church!!!"
  14. Actually I hate the "You are lucky" comment even worse. How am I lucky? It wasn't luck. It was a choice. People who say that it is luck are trying to make themselves feel better for the choices they have made. I imagine it would offend a successful career woman to tell her that she is where she is because of luck. She too made choice and worked and sacrificed to get where she is. We aren't rich. We have to sacrifice MANY things that two income families take for granted. I chose to be monetarily "poor" in order to have a richer relationship with my kids during their brief stay under my roof. There was no luck involved. Luck is pulling #1 out of the hat at a Yankee Swap.
  15. :iagree: Plus someone else might have more to add to the conversation OR might also benefit from the answer during the brief time that it is back on top :)
  16. We used the science this year and it was the most successful science year we have had! Thank you so much!
  17. reading books...both ones that are read independently and ones that i read aloud. This of course encompasses science, history and various other subjects as well as "just for fun" books.
  18. yes, won't load for me either... I am sure it will be resolved soon
  19. This year we have enjoyed following this science schedule: http://www.guesthollow.com/homeschool/science/otters_science/otters_science_main.html I guess it isn't really free if your library doesn't have a lot of the resources but we only purchased a small fraction of the books and are still enjoying it a lot
  20. We are finishing up middle ages. Our favorite read aloud this year was Adam of the Road
  21. My almost 10 yo ds WANTS to do geometry. I was originally thinking that was a high school subject..but now I have heard some programs say earlier is better. He is currently in Singapore 5A. What are the prerequisites for geometry? Some good programs for his age? TIA!
  22. Where I live there are fisher Cats. When they scream (in the middle of the night) they sound exactly like a human screaming. They are indistinguishable in my opinion. I hope everything is alright there!
  23. I posted some pictures that i took yesterday of the flooding. One of our playgrounds is almost completely submerged http://shelznh.blogspot.com/2010/03/wordless-wednesday-3-31-playground.html
