Whole-to-parts Bible curriculum?
mims replied to Tranquility7's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Amazingly, What's in the Bible, by Phil Vischer (the creator of Veggie Tales) does an amazing job. They are DVD's with a curriculum companion if you want. Geared for upper grade school but the teenage helpers and adults in my church kept commenting how much they learned. They overview every book in the Bible and tie themes together all the way through. They also teach some of the complicated words and ideas in a easy to understand way. -
Check out this listing. Click on their summer programs to see if you have any local ones. The one in our state is for high schoolers and has been free over the last several years. It is definitely cultural as well as language and I have heard of a couple of things that were a little pro-Arab/anti-US. This is second hand and I feel most people felt it was very straightforward and a great intro to the language and culture. https://startalk.umd.edu

Economics in a Box looks like it has about 30 different clips from him. I can't find a good list with out typing each one out but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same videos you are thinking of. It has been several years since we used it and I'm having a little trouble seeing where they are even scheduled in but I'm sure could be used along side if they aren't specifically scheduled. Maybe someone else knows more than I.

Check out college confidential. It isn't a scam per se but is not usually worth it. You pay $50 and the statistics show that very few get scholarships and it isn't viewed too highly on resumes etc.

Looking for marriage-related book recommendations
mims replied to Just Kate's topic in The Chat Board
"What did you Expect" by Tripp. A very, very good marriage book! http://www.amazon.com/What-Did-You-Expect-Redesign/dp/1433530783/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421173644&sr=8-1&keywords=what+did+you+expect -
Needed! Opinions of Teaching Textbooks Geometry, v. 2
mims replied to sheryl's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I haven't used version 2 but like the layout of version 1. The work isn't done on the computer and I think that works much better for proofs etc. -
Montana has had below 0 and we might get over 10 today . . .

Name of homeschool on diploma/transcript
mims replied to klmama's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We had a different name on a transcript sent to state university and they made us resend it with the words Homeschool on it. I have since heard of several people on this board having that requirement. -
Any chance he has been on a strong medicine or antibiotic recently (last couple of years)? Migraine medicine really messed up my daughter's gut and probiotics have been the magical answer! Amazing the difference when nothing else worked.

Self-directed Latin and Greek--is it possible??
mims replied to Moxie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
If you go for Koine Greek, Elementary Greek is perfect for that age. It is very self directed and has CD's for pronunciation. -

We enjoyed Economics in a Box. It is conservative. -
flashcards for subjects like Science
mims replied to kfeusse's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Mine have done quizlet.com. People write up their own flashcards for different publishers etc. and save them for others. They have a number of different ways you can work on them or even quiz with them. I've found this very useful for 7th and 8th grade. My one daughter especially needs to have the 'facts' down before she can start connecting all the dots. -
Computer Programming Suggestions??
mims replied to SA Homeschooler's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
TeenCoder series. Self taught and my son loved it. He now spend hours coding on his own and investigating new things so I take that as success. -
It isn't a Final Transcript without a specific graduation date?
mims replied to Blue Hen's topic in The College Board
I had a month and year and it wasn't good enough for our public university! I needed to choose a day. It also had to say 'homeschool' in the title even though everything else implied it was homeschool (descriptions etc.). -
Does your state have free Dual Enrollment?
mims replied to foxbridgeacademy's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
University of Montana (and missoula college) charge $50/credit hour with no application fees or anything. For a homeschooler to sign up on their own they have to sign up for college credit only. If they want it specified as dual enrolment they have to go through a public school. I can't figure out why it matters because I am doing my own transcript and could include it if I wanted. The other benefit is you will be considered a student and don't have to reapply or anything later. -
I own and like Economics in a Box and Notgrass Government. I used them with my older dd. Notgrass was a little boring but so straightforward that she liked it. My son wants to go the AP route. Both make it clear that they are not covering everything for the AP test. Any suggestions for study guides that will add the basics that we need for the AP (whether you have used these curriculum or not)? Anyone have a student try the AP with these curriculum? If it helps at all, my son has taken the APUSH and I think will get a pretty good score so he does understand the level he needs to study and has practiced essays for it etc. Thanks!

The publisher is not allowing AWANA to update with the 1984 NIV, they would have to use 2011 so AWANA has introduced the ESV. Our understanding is they are fazing out NIV over the next several years. We are starting all our first year kids on ESV next year, both Sparkies and T and T, and then add a level every year. We have noticed AWANA is already closing out the CD's that go with the NIV so would expect them fazing out the books shortly.

I'll second the teencoder books. There is a progression to work through.
