  1. I let my three kids watch tv after lunch so I can relax. I tell them they have to watch something educational like Beakman's World, Magic School Bus or Postcards from Buster.
  2. I would be furious if I had to go through that. Being a landlord is pretty frustrating sometimes.I have some stories, but yours tops mine! Dh and I used to be pretty laid back about who we rented to. Now there are applications, background checks, references. We don't let rent slide for longer than two weeks. We have never had to do an eviction, luckily. Are you going to get back in the saddle and rent again?
  3. I know the title sounds boring but I can add some drama! I have a lot of baggage about this space.
  4. I own a two unit house with upper and lower apartments. There is a shared front door and entryway. It is a beautiful 4 feet by six feet space with woodwork and stained glass windows. My first tenant completely decorated it with tons of curtains, carpet and fragile antiques. I told her that my twins are two and get into stuff. She was outraged and moved everything. My next tenant completely took over the space as well and actually blocked my apartments access to it with furniture. I never said anything. Now it is empty and before we find new tenants I would like to set new rules. First of all, do a lot of people do this? I never did this as a renter and find it quite bizarre. How can I word the lease to keep new tenants from filling this nice shared space with tons of stuff? I need this to be a nice clean space that my clients can enter.
  5. You have a lot on your plate and your family should be helping or at least visiting you.:grouphug: I don't have nearly the responsibilities that you do, but I do feel upset when other people make suggestions about traveling that would be easy for them (no children or older more independent children) but superhard for me.
  6. I had no idea that Steiner wrote such racist things. yuck.
  7. There are several things that I like about Waldorf education that I incorporate into what I do with my children. Now these are things that I have found on curriculum pages on Waldorf schools' websites, so i don't know if they were important or intrinsic to the original Waldorf philosophy, or if they are a modern interpretation. Anyway, here they are: -appreciation of natural materials, such as wool, wood, etc -processes that manipulate these materials into functional objects (I love the whole gathering, carding, spinning of wool thing) - how humans learn to adapt to different environments (gathering food, building houses) I just bought a book that is an anthology of poems used by Waldorf teachers called, A Journey through Time in Verse and Rhyme, and I love it. - I like the artwork associated with Waldorf (watercolor, paper stars) Here I things I do not embrace: -waiting until children are considerably older before teaching the alphabet -math gnomes -teaching children that plastic toys are dead
  8. I babysat a lot when I was a young teen. I can think of two clients who still owe me money. Even back then, I remember thinking, "who cheats a minor out of money?" I think you should get involved to pressure the woman to pay.
  9. I have been using History Odyssey Early Modern History by Panida Press. I have been wondering if I should've just used SOTW activity book volume 3 instead. I think the activity book might have more pictures to color and the maps might be a little better but I am not sure. I have been trying to look at sample pages on line. What do others think?
  10. I think if it does not have a button that says "add to cart" you have to go to used or third party sellers. But I am no expert. Last time I tried to buy something I spent 30 min signing in.
  11. My greatgrandparents came from Naples and Sicily. I called my grandfather "nanu", but standard Italian for grandfather is "nonno". I called my grandmother "nani" but standard Italian is "nonna".
  12. Oh no! I just decided that I loved amazon and sent in a huge order for books and audio books. Has anyone had trouble with buying these items from Amazon (I dont go through their third parties).
  13. Oh and I forgot that he takes a nap at preschool and then that night stays up quite late. Another reason right there. Thanks- I will go through those threads to find some ideas to keep him busy. We often let him participate in class but sometimes its hard.
  14. My 3 1/2 year old goes to daycare twice a week for 6 hours a day. On these days I can focus on work more with his homeschooled brothers and I can also relax and have a little me time after lessons are finished. There is also less squabbling on those days. However, I am having issues with daycare now: 1. my 3 1/2 year old complains every morning that he wants to stay with me and it breaks my heart 2. Its a pain to get all three boys into the car because everyone is complaining. I think 8 years is too young to leave alone at home. 3. The especially caring daycare workers have left and I don't think the new staff are as patient or warm. 3. Since I am working part time less often, I don't make very much and can't really justify the expense. 4. It would be nice to not drive in the mornings with bad weather coming up. So I have basically decided to take him out in a month or so. Any advice on how to have him home all the time? How to handle his periodic disruptions?
  15. I am learning latin for the first time. I'm so excited! I have the book and CD called "Minimus". I tried to just use the book but I didn't know how to pronounce anything.
  16. Yes I absolutely can recognize the sound of a UPS truck. My three year old can, too.
  17. I never read Winnie the Pooh, Frog and Toad or Velveteen Rabbit to my older boys. When I read them to my younger one, the older ones (age 8)listened so that made me happy that they aren't missing out.
  18. I was a public school parent for a few years. I wanted to know everything that the boys did at school. The dynamic teachers who loved their jobs loved me. The teachers who were less than thrilled to be there did not like me. Then I was a private school parent for three months and just couldn't keep up with the homework, sales, meetings, uniforms, signing stuff, etc. The one thing I started to really resent as a public or private school parent was the shopping. I was tired of repeatedly going to the store for supplies, snacks, etc.
  19. These are things I like to do, but I don't know if the kids notice: put away sandals, bathing suits, bug spray, etc and take out coats and boots; put flannel sheets on bed; plant mums outside. These are things I do with the kids: we bought a little scarecrow and pumpkin for the front; we have hot chocolate on colder days; I took out all of our fall children's books (I hide them and the winter books because I don't want to read them over the summer); talk about falling leaves; we have started a nature journal and took notes about fall. Living around a beach sounds amazing to me. I am so used to seeing trees turn colors and raking, finding acorns, and pinecones and chestnuts on the ground, I wonder what fall is like at the beach.
  20. If this workbook is very thick, something on the order of 200+ pages you can use a bandsaw. Most milling places have a bandsaw and they may even do it for you for free.
  21. It does feel better to vent. I have been wondering, "Am I just too uptight and micromanaging?" I was afraid someone might suggest talking to their parents, but that would involve three different sets of parents. Then the whole neighborhood wouldn't like me.
