  1. Does anyone have links to blogs or other sites with cute fall projects? My kids are 9 and 4.
  2. I am the same way. I get stressed with two many things on the calender, especially if they are back to back.
  3. We have a huge beautiful church and convent across the street that takes up half a block. There are no wild parties, no garbage anywhere. Its awesome. They do ring large bronze bells everyday at 7AM, noon, 6PM (?) and 9PM, but its nice.
  4. I just had that problem before giving up and coming here. I think I will deal with it later (ask dh when he gets home).
  5. I only skimmed the article. it was weird. I first thought of Nora Ephron. Then I thought of Samantha Power. How about Susan Wise Bauer and Charlotte Mason?
  6. My older two play together and I entertain my four year old for a good portion of the day. His brothers often wont play with him because he takes their legos apart and makes game pieces talk when they are trying to play monopoly.
  7. thanks everybody! I think I may have found someone through a friend and they charge $12/hr. I hope she is able to take on a new babysitting gig.
  8. I have twin 9 year olds and a four year old. I work at home, but sometimes I need to go to meetings. There is a teenage homeschooler I met and am thinking of asking her if she will watch my boys 2 Mondays (or 4 Mondays, I can't decide) a month. What should I offer to pay her for 6 hrs a day?
  9. That is a really funny show. The humor reminds me of Northern Exposure. I loved "Jalaloween".
  10. I think self educating is fantastic and sets a good example for kids.
  11. I started doing this for my nine year olds about halfway through the school year. why stop them from learning about something they want to learn about? Its great to see them pursuing their interests.
  12. I had never heard of it until one of my boys was born with one just above his bum. It disappeared over time.
  13. My twins are 9 years old today! I think the first full year of homeschooling went really well. I finished all of my end of year paperwork (thanks to Hive for help on various things) and will go to post office tomorrow. I received a UPS box from Rainbow Resource yesterday and watched the boys get all excited pulling out their new learning materials. They even started reading and working on some stuff. I guess I tricked them into school during the summer.
  14. Thanks for the quick replies! I followed the link to Seton and it looks pretty easy. I might leave that section of the IHIP blank for now. I don't think my school district will give me a hard time.
  15. My boys will be in 4th grade next year. On the IHIP form that my school district sent to me, there is a blank where I am supposed to indicate if I will produce a narrative end of year assessment or a test. I don't know anything about these tests or where the boys should take it. Should I just do a narrative for another year and worry about it for 5th grade? Actually, as I write this, I am thinking about doing just that. But will someone clue me in anyway so I can start thinking about the test?
  16. This was my first full year of homeschooling and I realized that I liked to have large blocks of time for one subject. I was thinking maybe that winter is for staying inside and doing history and fall and spring for doing science outside. Some people have two week blocks for history and science.
  17. I just bought a bucket balance for my 4 year old. Actually my 8 year olds like it too. So far they have just been experimenting and playing with it. Does anyone have any activities or lessons that I could do with it?
  18. Is there a polite way to do this? I have been dropping major hints that I don't really like him to be here. My boys keep asking why he can't come in the house and why they can't sleep over at his house.
  19. My boys have a friend who is nice enough. He is 7 or 8 years old. We have had many playdates but now he is really getting on my nerves. He is kind of sneaky. I found him holding my checkbook and going through a basket of stuff on my dresser. So I made a rule that no kids go in my room. He likes to mess up my twins bedroom and one twin gets upset. So I made a rule that no one goes in the bedrooms ever. He will repeatedly try to sneak in. I have to follow him to the rear of the house and say don't go in there. I decided to solve the problem by saying why doesn't everyone just play outside. He repeatedly tries to sneak in the house. I have to lock the doors. If dh opens the door, the kid goes in and I have to follow him and tell him we are playing outside. I really don't know his parents. I have talked on the phone with the mom. But I feel like the boys watch whatever they want. My boys told me about some really scary stuff they watched there. Now I don't want my boys to go over there. Also, we received a call from his mom's phone at 3 in the morning. A long message was left on the voice mail of static, and then female voices exclaiming, " have you been passed out here in your car the whole time? we were looking for you!" So, discuss. Give me any thoughts at all. Am I too overprotective? Am I too judgemental? Should I relax and not jump up every time he sneaks around? Did I mention that he punched another kid on my lawn a few weeks ago and I sent him home?
  20. I'm too tired at eight o'clock at night to watch another child. My day should be almost done at that point.
