  1. I totally have a crush on him. I can't wait to watch.
  2. My 10 year old twins love Ask magazine. Its a science magazine. If you go to Cricket magazine online, they have many different cool magazines for kids. It think Cricket is literature, Calliope is history, and Faces is geography. The subscriptions are a bit pricey, but worth it.
  3. I let the kids play with it and periodically mention that the moonsand doesn't get wet and it is hydrophobic, which means fear of water in Greek. I would love some new ideas.
  4. I have an Oak Meadow grade 5 curriculum picked out. I heard they have a big sale in May so I am trying to be good and wait.
  5. We found National Geographic for kids. It has games and videos. My 5 year old likes it.
  6. Sometimes I just return all library books and don't get more for a few weeks or months so that my boys will focus on books we have at home.
  7. Here are some reasons why we have art and music appreciation: 1. Sometimes a piece of art or music can fill us with happiness or help us feel connected to the artist/other viewers. 2. Art and music often reflect history, events, religion, and/or culture. Art and music present different ways to explore and understand these subjects. 3. It opens different paths and perhaps career options for kids (artist, curator, art conservator, musician, entertainment fields, etc.) 4. Perhaps this is similar to #1, but art and music appreciation are other ways to spend time that is enjoyable.
  8. We just started OM1 midyear and so far we really like it. There is reading, drawing, math, music, and art all presented in creative ways. In fact, my nine-year olds come over and listen when I am working with my youngest. I am going to get OM5 for them next year. I am a curriculum and book junkie so I supplement all the time. I am always second guessing myself- am we doing enough? am we doing too much? There is someone on this board with an awesome blog about her kids' experience with Oak Meadow. She would be a great resource. I hope it is ok to post her link.http://nancextoo.livejournal.com/.
  9. I am also wondering if OM 5th is written to the student. I am probably going to use it next year. Also, are the materials they send you like workbooks? Do kids write in them? I have twins and it would save a lot of money if I could just buy one set of materials.
  10. I have been using sotw for my elementary kids. I feel like there is so much good info in the books and activity books that they could be used for junior or even senior high. When I started sotw I thought they would be read in a loop for 12 years so that kids learn about ancient history once every four years, middle ages once every four years, etc. However, just now I was reading that they are meant for elementary school ages. Can you tell me how you use this curriculum? I feel like my kids could actually go through these volumes several times at different ages and keep getting more out of it.
  11. I can't wait to see it! Do you think it is appropriate for nine year olds?
  12. I try to watch it every year with the kids. We also love Charlie Brown Christmas too.
  13. I found pages of squares with dates and events in the back of my SOTW vol 4 and I thought about photos of people's timelines where they had cut them out and laminated them. So, now I would like to get a laminator. Could someone tell me what kind they have and how much they run for? I was looking online, but was overwhelmed by some of the prices.
