  1. Use double-stick tape to keep your feet from slipping out of your shoes.
  2. As I recall, the lessons in Advanced Math are much longer. Whereas each lesson in the previous books can usually be read and the problems worked in about an hour, the AM lessons take more time to read. I would figure about two hours per lesson.
  3. Not worked up. Just throwing out a thought. :)
  4. I just don't think it's worth getting that worked up over...
  5. Good grief! You'd think that someone was trying to recruit the op's son for some kind of weird cult or something. If the person in question was the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, would you all be so offended by the recruiting? Is it so shameful to serve one's country in the armed forces??The Navy recruiter's remark was, admittedly, ignorant, but you have to admit, there are some homeschooled kids who are just plain weird (of course, some public-schooled kids are weirdos, as well). Hopefully, the op's son just smiled and said, "Thank you!"
  6. Registration for the SAT is usually a month before the test, unless you want to pay a late registration fee and scramble for a spot. Then it takes about 3 weeks after the test until the scores are released. Scholarship money may not be available late in the game, even at a school with rolling admissions. Usually those schools suggest applying by January, at the latest, for fall semester in order to be considered for the best scholarships. My advice is to take the test earlier just in case. There is nothing to lose except the test fee and a few hours. And books are plentiful at the library for test preparation.
  7. Excellent post, Lori! My kids all took the PSAT beginning in 9th grade for practice. Oldest took her first SAT in June right after 10th grade (and scored extremely well). The other kids waited until 11th grade to take the SAT. Our state has a scholarship for high scoring students that is definitely worth working for (it used to pay 100% of tuition and fees, but that amount has been decreased). Colleges also use those scores to award scholarships. You might be surprised at the money that is available to students with good scores. For those students planning to apply to the service academies, the application process begins early and usually the best scores for each section are considered. It pays to take the tests early and often! One never knows what a child might ultimately decide to do. A kid who doesn't seem very motivated in 9th or 10th grade might decide by 12th grade to apply to a competitive school. I believe in keeping your options open!
  8. We have gotten 5 diplomas and graduation announcements from homeschooldiploma.com, and have been very happy with their products and service.
  9. She's beautiful!! We have a polydactyl white cat with blue eyes named Twinkie.
  10. Oh, Rosie...I am so sorry. :grouphug:
  11. Yes. Every day. I look and feel so much better with makeup. Plus, even in my mid-fifties, my skin is very oily. Wearing makeup helps keep that under control. The one thing I don't use, however, is mascara. No matter what kind I try, it always seems to smear
  12. I grew up in a family of seven with only one bathroom. That was a little inconvenient at times. We have two bathrooms for our family of seven, and it' fine. For one thing, your family won't always be as large as it is now. But even now, two should be enough. It teaches people to be considerate of others. And if there is a nasty illness, you use buckets.
  13. I tried to ignore this post, but just have to respond. First of all, Ellie never said to tell the school to deal with it; she said it's their job to deal with it. As for rest, quite frankly, you sound like a know-it-all teenager who won't take any advice from your "old fashioned" parents who "just don't understand anything." To scoff at the advice of those of us who have been homeschooling over 20 years and have graduates, college graduates, and graduates of medical school, law school, or graduate school is just plain foolish. You can learn much from the experience of others. And without homeschooling pioneers like Ellie, who paved the way for you, the rights and privileges you have to legally homeschool, dual-enroll, etc., and the ease with which your children may get into college would not exist. If anyone was rude here, I'd say it was you.
  14. Interestingly, when I click on the comments to see what people are saying about the post, they don't show up...
  15. If Ferris suspected before that Phillips was a sexual predator, he couldn't come out publicly and say so or he would have been sued. You don't just go around making such allegations about people without some kind of proof.
  16. Both of my STEM guys are actually very talented artists, although the older one would never admit it. :glare: The younger one has had full scholarships to our museum of art drawing and painting classes for years and could easily get into a top art school. He just doesn't want to major in art. As far as arts appreciation classes in college, my DH teaches music appreciation at the college level and loves it. Unlike many music professors, he realizes that the students he is teaching are not music majors, and he is not trying to teach them as though they are. He teaches a lot of history of art/architecture and music by way of telling stories and using power point, DVDs and live concerts, and he knows his subject inside out, backward and forward. One of his goals is to create consumers of the arts -- concert goers, patrons, etc. Let's face it; SOMEBODY has to make enough money to pay for it. ;) His students come out of that class knowing more history than ever, and MANY of them now attend arts events regularly, even enjoying opera.
  17. I have to agree with Juanita. Having been the caregiver for my FIL when he had ALS, I know what they are dealing with. He lived with us for 18 months after his diagnosis, until he died here at home. They just need your love now.
  18. So sad...I've never agreed with everything that Mary Pride promoted, but I will say that I enjoyed her books immensely. They are informative, challenging and, in my case, life-changing. My condolences to the Pride family. Praying for God's comfort during this time.
  19. My kids all took it each year, beginning in 9th grade, as practice for the SAT. As others have said, the only time it counts for National Merit is 11th. The PSAT didn't cost nearly as much to take as the SAT, and it gave my kids the experience of taking a timed, standardized test. It also gave us an idea of what we needed to work on for the next few years.
  20. HL is not opposed to contraceptives -- it is certain (abortifacient) contraceptives that they have a problem with. Taking away a person's income is not the same as (what they consider) taking away the life of a human being.
