  1. When the power is out all over the neighborhood, the stars are amazing. I remember sitting outside after a hurricane took out our electricity, gazing at the stars. Absolutely beautiful!
  2. I see she's a published author! Is she majoring in writing?
  3. I think it depends on the student. I've heard that at least part of Advanced Math should be completed before taking the SAT, but my daughter took it after Algebra 2 and scored 750 in math. My other daughter scored 640. Personally, I think there is enough geometry in Algebra 2 to get a decent score.
  4. Hopefully, the books I borrow from the library have not been in someone's bathroom. Besides, with 7 people in the family I don't want to encourage dilly-dallying.:)
  5. It's been 2 1/2 years, and I still worry. I think the accident made him a little more careful, though.
  6. You've gotten lots of good advice here. One thing I might add: find someone (husband, close friend, etc.) to whom you can be accountable. Let them give you a kick in the pants once in a while!:001_smile: When my husband was working on his PhD, there were many times he felt like quitting or wouldn't know how to proceed. I wouldn't let him give up! It was a victory for both of us when he got that degree!
  7. :iagree:Absolutely! I was going to suggest instant rice, but someone else already mentioned it. Another suggestion: get as much laundry done ahead of time as you can. At least your family will have clean clothes!:001_smile: I live in South Florida, and we go through the "routine" alot. I always make cinnamon rolls when there's a hurricane coming. My kids call them hurricane rolls, and they always look forward to them. They actually have fond memories of the storms we've gone through.:001_huh:
  8. Good for her!:001_smile: You must be proud!
  9. It sounds like you are providing plenty of opportunities for your kids to meet others. They'll be fine. There are many socially awkward children in public schools, and there are many social butterflies that homeschool. Kids are all different, even within the same family. One of my kids was voted most friendly in her college class after being homeschooled all her life. On the other hand, I have one who is terribly shy. And the others are somewhere in between. I usually just mention all those outside activities the kids do, and the subject gets dropped. People who express this concern are simply uninformed.
  10. :iagree:We did school work right up until I was in labor. But I agree that it would be nice to relax and enjoy your time with the other children now. I think your plan sounds like a good one!
  11. I think the usual evolution of words like homeschool is that they begin as two words, progress to hyphenated words, and end up as one word. Since homeschooling (or at least the name "homeschooling") is relatively new, we see it written all three ways. I've been homeschooling over 20 years, so I write it "homeschool.":)
  12. Brag on!:001_smile: I'm happy for you and your son.
  13. Every single dr's office I have been in (in South FL) has had a rediculous wait time. The worst was when I took my 86 yr. old FIL, who has ALS, to see his primary care physician and we waited an hour before we realized the dr. wasn't even there! He was so uncomfortable sitting in his wheelchair that we just left. We were really ticked off. It is extremely difficult to take FIL anywhere, and the receptionists didn't say a word about the absence of the doctor!
  14. I usually try to read the whole thread befor posting, but sometimes I just don't have time at the moment to read all the posts, and if I wait another day or two, the thread will be too old. We're homeschoolers... we should all understand BUSY. It can be annoying, as Kelli said. I'll try to do better
  15. Yes, I have had that happen a few times. I thought I had a splinter or a piece of broken glass in my foot, and when I examined it, it was a cat hair!
  16. Thanks, ladies, for the tips! I'll have to dust off my crock pot and try some new things. Maybe it's just me, but everything I've ever eaten from a crock pot seems to have an odd taste. I guess I'll try some new recipes.
  17. :grouphug: Thank God he is ok. 1.5 hours? If it were me I would drive there and give him a hug and check on him myself. He's probably very upset over the whole thing right now. My son messed his car up when he was 18 when he hit a palm tree. He didn't get hurt, but it taught him to be more careful. I was just so thankful that he was alright, especially after seeing the car.
  18. It's been a while since we did Abeka Biology, but I think we did a section (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.) each day and did the labs as they fit in with what the kids were learning. It wasn't that complicated, and it seemed to work out over the course of the year.
  19. Do you have a teacher's guide? I think they give you a day by day schedule.
  20. I don't remember the particulars, but I know that because my daughter was under 18 at the time that the school wanted a GED for admissions, she would have been required to attend classes before taking the test. This, of course, would have been in a class of students who may have been drop-outs! And, as I recall, it would have cost something like $75. There was just no way we were going to just go along with it.
  21. I didn't read all of the posts, but was that video made after the little girl died?? If so, it is very disturbing that the Pearls don't seem sad about it at all (even if they weren't responsible).
  22. I would list it as a 9th grade course. If it's a high school level course, I put it on the transcript, even if they took the course before 9th grade (especially, as a previous poster mentioned, with something like biology, which is a standard high school course. You don't want people looking at the transcript and thinking your child never took biology.).
