Alternative Medicine: ear infections?
warriormom replied to warriormom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yes, my son has very large tonsils like I did. Thank you for the advice about chiropractic care/massage. I might give the oil treatments a try as well. Thanks!- 20 replies

My ds had an ear infection every month from August to March. We went to an ENT, and his hearing is normal. The doctor is not pushing for ear tube surgery but he said it is an option that might work for him. Do you know of any alternatives to ear tube surgery? I am open to alternative medicine. He constantly has fluid in one ear or both. Should I just shake him upside down till the fluid comes out....LOL?:lol:Yes, I am kidding!

Thought this might be a fun thread. Please be sure to list why. If I had to home school on a desert island, I would take.... Here are the rules: You can take 4 read-alouds You can take 3 curricula You can take 2 reference books You can take 1 home school book Oh and enough supplies to work with the above (you do not have to list unless you think it is worth listing) Oh and you can take a flask...just kidding

Was your husband supportive of you when you started homeschooling? Did you have to work on him? When did he decide that homeschooling was right for your family? I would LOVE to hear your story! DH says that he will let me home school "when pigs fly". God has a funny sense of humor. I am checking out of my window every day for my flying pigs:lol:I know when we make a declarative statement, God laughs.

How many languages do you plan to teach?

Spanish is important since DH is Puerto Rican. After that, I would love for them to learn Latin. I would not be opposed to them learning French or Mandarin when they are older. -

Have you ever heard of using fish oil to help children with speech disorders? If you give your child fish oil to help with speech, which fish oil do you use? What dosage? What are your results? I am considering using FO for my DS who has speech disfluency and mild speech delay along with county provided speech therapy.

Today, I went to a Classical Christian school. They mentioned that they might move the kindergarten students away from Abeka to either Spelling to Write and Read or Saxon Phonics. 1. Can you tell me about Spelling to Write and Read and/or Saxon Phonics? 2. What is your experience with SWR and/or Saxon Phonics? Strengths? Weaknesses? 3. Do you have an opinion on why a school would move from Abeka phonics to SWR or Saxon Phonics? 4. How should I prepare my child to learn this material? 5. Comments?

I just like nicknames. I think it really shows the personality of my children. My captain america told me that I needed to have more children since he is going to be a super hero when he grows up. He does not want me to be lonely :tongue_smilie: Princess Pea cries princess whenever I put her in a dress.

Elementary Spanish is great. I would also look at Getting Started with Spanish. I think it is age appropriate.

Have you tried buying it used from ebay.com, vegsource or other used homeschool curriculum websites? -
Did you know that all Disney Junior Shows can be listened to in spanish? My kiddos are watching Mickey Mouse in spanish downstairs. You just need to change your options on your menu guide to listen! http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2010/05/26/disneyabc-television-replacing-soapnet-channel-with-disney-junior/52530:)

What do you think of this potty training method?
warriormom replied to mo2's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I tried everything under the sun. The only thing that worked was taking my son to the potty every 30 minutes for 3 weeks. I read books to him while he went potty. I challenged myself to read over a 100 books to keep my eyes off of the potty training goal. I also used a sticker chart. Evertime he filled up the sticker chart we had a movie night. Finally, we went on a road trip to see family with him in pull ups. He told us EVERYTIME he had to go potty after that with no accidents. Once he was potty trained we bought him a fun toy. He was 3.5 at the time. -
If you want to lose some serious weight or get into shape, buy the old fashioned nordic track ski machines. They are great. Not much that you can break with it. I lost 30 lbs after my first baby on this machine (with diet). You can buy it on craigslist or a thrift store for $35-65. LOL, if it is not used,it makes a great coat rack too :) The best machine is the one you will use regularly.

K Webster's Speller to teach reading, weekly schedule
warriormom replied to ElizabethB's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
1. Should I teach my son the long vowel and short vowel sound of "ba be bi bo.."? If not, why? 2. How do you know whether your child is proficient with the syllabary? Any clues or advice? I review the syllabary with him, and then we play "how do you spell....ba? etc. " Is that what I should be doing? 3. Anything I should look out for? Anything I should guard against using the syllabary?
