  1. Do you all have any ideas and/or advice on how I can help my son with his attention span, listening and skill of following directions? He goes to a classical school. His teacher said that he is incredibly obedient. He just does not do well with listening and following directions. He is not advanced in the area of communication. He was a bit of a late talker. He is now in speech therapy for a mild stutter. He has been evaluated by his speech therapy and there is no delay or signs of ADD/ADHD.
  2. Try Microcenter. They gave the ipad on sale for $450. My husband got a $50 off coupon for ipad or accessories. Got an ipad today for $400 (oh and I had credit for a laptop that fell apart during the accidental warranty period at microcenter). After credit, we paid $180 out of pocket.
  3. I had my membranes sweeped with ds. I went into labor but I did get a maternal infection and infected placenta.
  4. When I lost my baby girl, Faith, my mom and sil bought me a simple silver bracelet that had the initials of my baby girl on the front and the date she went to be with the Lord on the back. It is a nice token to remember my baby girl that I lost at 28 weeks. Not sure about her experience, but it was very traumatic to go through childbirth when giving birth to a stillborn.
  5. Today I went to my Tuesday Bible study. One of the moms stood up and shared about a friend that had a 3 month old. She went grocery shopping with her 3 month old. She had the infant car seat in the top part of the buggy. When the bag boy brought out the grocery cart, he hit a speed bump hard. The infant carseat went flying and the baby hit his head. The baby passed away at the hospital. Just wanted to pass this on. BTW I put the infant carrier on the top part of the buggy with both of my babies. So sad....
  6. Last week I went to the doctor. They did an x-ray and diagnosed me with bronchitis.
  7. I am so sick of being sick. I spent a week in bed with a chest cold, migraine (possibly the flu). Ever since then, I have had a horrible chest cold. Last Friday I went to a minute clinic and they referred me to urgent care since it sounded like I had congestion in my chest (fluid in lungs). They did an x-ray and diagnosed me with bronchitis. I was given a strong antibiotic and cough syrup. I still feel pretty weak and congested. Any advice? Folk/natural remedies?
  8. Ok, is AAR pre-level 1 appropriate for a 3 year old? Just thinking about this for my dd. What are your thoughts? She is 3 years 1 month old to get an idea.
  9. All I hear is negative stuff about ETC online. Anyone like it? Why do you dislike it? Any online or computer alternatives that work?
  10. Right now he is doing A Beka phonics kindergarten at school. I just thought it might be a good supplement. We are on the free trial of Reading Eggs and he is flying through it (Lesson 80 on day 2). He is at a 2nd grade reading level. I would love to help him strengthen his phononemes, diphthongs and help increase fluency.

  12. I am considering buying the math wrap-ups specifically addition and subtraction. Is this a gimmick or is it genius? Should I get the cd that goes along with it? Any advice on when my dc should work on memorizing facts? Is there such a thing as too early?
  13. Only 101 fever. Do you think it is the flu? This early?
  14. I am achy all over. I have had a headache since Friday. I am weak. I also feel like I am coming down with an upper respiratory infection (some coughing). Any natural remedies? Advice? :ack2: Help!
  15. He is reading at about a solid 2nd grade level. He does pretty well with decoding except when he is tired :) I would love for him to move towards fluency. Maybe exposure to diphthongs and more practice with more difficult phonograms.
  16. My 5 year old ds finished TYCR 100 easy lessons last spring. I worked with him a bit on Wesbster's speller and syllabary. I lost interest and so did my son. I am thinking about purchasing HOP: Master Reader. Do they use sight words at this level? That would be a deal breaker. Also do you think he would be ready for this program even though it is meant for 7 yo? Any other suggestions for a fun way to move towards fluency? He loves computer games! :) FYI, he is in a half-day kindergarten class that is using Abeka K.

  18. I am looking for a comprehension skill building workbook. Not just for reading, but for following directions. I am looking for something that is kindergarten- first grade level. :glare: Thanks!
  19. My ds has great conversational skills. He is highly social. He is bright. He just seems like in the classroom setting he needs one on one attention at Math time because there are a lot of specific instructions (Saxon K). Following instructions and comprehension of words that somehow I think he should know (each) are not there.
  20. Thank you! I was already planning on talking to the speech therapist about this. Yes, he was evaluated.
  21. We do spank in our family, but we have achieved obedience without really spanking (except for serious offenses). We are consistent. We ask them to obey all the way, right away and with a happy heart. I have repeated that millions of times. We do a lot of planning sessions before we go places, "I expect that you....if not, you get one warning then we go home without complaint." I am one of those who believes in taking away the child's currency. If they love to play xbox, watch a show a day, paint for free time, that is what I take away one of those for disobedience. These are not rights but priveledges (sp?). The Well-Behaved Child by John Rosemond is a GREAT source for good common sense advice without spanking. The key is consistency to the point that even if you do not want to be consistent you are. You just need to keep in mind the "end game". Having who Children obey their parents, so they can obey God's word, so they can have a good life since they respect authority (boss, police officer, professor etc.) Oh and realize that the world does not revolve around them or owe them anything. A lot of adults still have not figured this out :)
  22. My child is 5.5. He is a very bright little boy who was a late-talker/early reader. He has been in speech therapy (with the school district) for fluency issues (mild stutter). He started school 2 weeks ago at a Classical Christian school. I have noticed that he has issues with following directions. He can do 2-step commands, but his retention of what is asked for him is not the best. Also when I am reading to him, his comprehension level is lacking. His teacher mentioned that during math time (using manipulatives) he needs a lot of one-on-one help with following directions. She said his counting and ability are great but the classroom skill of following directions is lacking (not within normal range, it is not an obedience issue but more of comprehending the directions). A "yellow flag went up" with me when she told me about this. I am concerned that there might be a delay in receptive communication. Do you have any advice on exercises to work on comprehension and direction following? curriculum? blog? advice?
