  1. When the PP said Phillip and Albert I took it that she meant Albert as in Queen Victoria's Albert, not George VI.
  2. This needed to be repeated rather than just liked. My family voted by mail several weeks ago.
  3. I watched all but three episodes over the weekend and loved it. I'm planning to watch the rest tomorrow night instead of watching, um, that other thing that will be on.
  4. I've heard it called the death tax and the inheritance tax. However many people I've come across don't actually know your inheritance has to be pretty big in order for you to be taxed on it.
  5. I've been watching The Crown on Netflix and have a few more episodes to finish up the season. Maybe that's what I should watch, considering Queen Elizabeth's offer to restore the U.S. to British rule.
  6. A non bookish but Doctor Who post - David Tennant was my first doctor and you know what they say - You never forget your first doctor! So yeah, he's my favorite. :) I never watched it growing up. Star Trek (TOS) and Lost in Space were pretty much the extent of my science fiction tv watching. Dh said he watched it on and off with his older brothers. I remember him watching the reboot with the 9th doctor but I didn't pay attention to it then. It wasn't until ds got older and got interested that I actually sat down with my guys and started watching. By then it was the 10th doctor. I did go back and watch the 9th doctor episodes just to get caught up. Matt Smith grew on me and I like him better than Eccleston who was obviously unhappy in his role. I lost interest in the current doctor mostly because dh and ds lost interest, but also partly because I didn't like the writing. At one time Netflix had the old original episodes and ds decided he wanted to try them. We randomly chose one of the black and white episodes. In it there was a girl from the future. She was from - wait for it - the year 2000! Of course she was dressed in the required future outfit, a jumpsuit. Even though it was b&w, we knew the jumpsuit was silver and sparkly. That episode was so laughable that it cured ds of wanting to watch more of those old episodes. I think he eventually went back and watched some of the 80s episodes on his own. Robin, at some point you need to watch The Doctor's Daughter - not because it's a great episode but because of the cool connections. The doctor's daughter really is the doctor's daughter, but she's also the doctor's wife. Confused? The actress who played the doctor's daughter is the daughter of Peter Davidson, who played the 5th doctor. That makes her the doctor's daughter. She also married David Tennant (they met while filming that episode). So she's also the doctor's wife.
  7. Goodness, this thread exploded quickly! If I don't respond now, I'll never catch up. Thanks. I was going to ask if it's okay to read out of order, then I saw that the question was asked and answered. Do you mean A Royal Pain or the Grantchester book? I enjoyed the first one and so far have only listened to this series. It seems like the type of series I'll enjoy more as an audio book than in print. I feel the same way about the Amelia Peabody books too, although that narrator sometimes seems to get her voices mixed up. I'm not far enough into the Grantchester book to say what I think, but so far it looks as though the tv series followed the book fairly closely. I'll let you know more after I finish. I started listening to that last year but it went back to the library - twice. I plan to try again one day. I hope things calm down a bit now so you can get some reading in. Was the surgery you or a family member? Either way, :grouphug: hugs and healing thoughts. Ouch! When I broke my ankle I got one two pins and one plate. It sounds like I got off easy. Take advantage of that bedrest and read while you have that excuse. Sending you well wishes too.
  8. I/we've had dogs named: Cookie Tuffy Lady Bandit Duke Wolf Beau Kiyam (don't ask) Tara Scottie (no, it wasn't a Scottie) Our most recent dog, the one in my avatar that we had to have put down in February, was named Dingo. Ds was 7 when we got him and since it was going to be his dog he got to name him. He was a huge Crocodile Hunter fan and his reasoning was: Steve Irwin is Australian, Dingo is Australian for dog, therefore my dog will be named Dingo. When he got older he asked what we were thinking when we let him name the dog Dingo. It was kind of fun though to sing the B-I-N-G-O song replacing the B with a D. :D I think it's good to have a few name ideas and wait until you find out the dog's personality. Sometimes the name you think you want just doesn't fit the dog once you get to know him/her.
  9. Do you have one(s) you love? I had a set that slid around too much, so I bought new ones. They're tan and impossible to get clean. I have light colored ceramic floors and would prefer not to have dark mats. Light solid or print would be best. Easy to clean is a must. I need two - one for by the sink and one by the stove. I'm looking at these. Does anyone have them? Have any other suggestions? Oh, and I don't want to spend a fortune.
  10. I posted in last week's thread just as this one was being started, so I'm bringing it over here. ______________________________________________________________________________ :grouphug: Jane :grouphug: It's humbling to see the devastation caused by natural disasters - I know from experience too. I'm sure your help on the board is appreciated. Here's hoping you can just disappear into some good books in November. I finished A Royal Pain (Her Royal Spyness #2) on audio book yesterday. Haven't decided what to listen to next. While I'm enjoying my slow journey through both Britain in the late middle ages (Plantagenet fiction and non-fiction) and the American Revolution (Hamilton bio), it's been a while since I read a plain old mystery. Yesterday I downloaded two from my library. Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death (Grantchester Mystery #1) - dh and I enjoyed the tv series on Amazon Prime so I thought I'd try the books. Cover Her Face - I don't know why as a mystery lover, I've never read P.D. James. I always meant to, and now I'll begin. Both seem like quick reads. I like to read before going to sleep but sometimes am too tired to concentrate on one of the meatier books I'm reading. OTOH I can't fall asleep without reading at least a little bit. My mysteries are great for those times.

  12. Chili IS election-y. :D Some years ago I heard about Election Day Chili. Put your favorite chili recipe in the crock pot (after browning the beef) and leave it be. It leaves you free to go stand in line to vote. That was before early voting and vote by mail for most states. I always liked the idea but it's usually too hot here for a cold weather dish like chili. Our election day forecast is high 79, low 62. Not quite chili weather.
  13. I don't think I actually answered the question. No, it doesn't bug me. I use facebook to interact with people. It would probably bug me if it happened the way it does to you, OP. But it doesn't. My fb friends (close ones, not necessarily acquaintances) and family sometimes interact by posting on each others' wall or tagging one another.
  14. This is pretty much the only way I post on someone's wall or they post on mine. Sometimes I'll post something on my wall and tag people. Other times I post directly on a person's wall. It depends on both the thing being posted and the person.
  15. Historical fiction fans - Have any of you read America's First Daughter? If so would you recommend it? I'm considering spending an Audible credit on it.
  16. I don't think this has been posted - History of literature movements reduced to a single sentence each.
  17. OP much of what you've said here is offensive and hurtful to people who have ADHD and to those of us who love them. There's no point in me giving you information. You've been give plenty. You don't want it.
  18. Maybe cranny fell out of fashion because we don't like to think about crannies. Nooks can be cozy comfortable places to sit and eat or read or just rest. Crannies are where socks and dust bunnies hide.
  19. I'm 85% finished with it, and I started it in late September. Of course I've read other books in between so it isn't really taking me that long to read it. Definitely worth reading. Or you could read her mystery The Queen's Man, also from your list. Or any of the Hercule Poirot stories you have listed. And you haven't read the second Captain Lacey yet? That might be my recommendation. You have a lot of good choices on your list - it's hard to pick just one.
  20. In addition to those two we also have Acorn and Amazon. We were Prime members for the shipping for years and still are mainly for that reason, so I can't say if it's worth it just for the streaming shows. Those of you looking at Acorn, keep in mind it's not the kind of British tv that will give you Sherlock and Doctor Who. We love it, but we like a lot of the British (and Canadian) mysteries. We've even enjoyed a few from Australia. I didn't read all of the other thread (just skimmed it) so I don't know if anyone linked to the shows on AcornTV. If not, you can browse here. And they have a 30 day free trial, so you can always give it a try then cancel if it's not for you. ETA: We also have the PBS app on our Roku and use it to watch some of the PBS shows that are on when we aren't able to watch. It's free, but you have to sign up online for a code from your local PBS station (at least with a Roku you do - I don't know if it's required for other streaming devices).
  21. Here too. We stopped hosting 4 years ago when dss took over, but when we hosted we didn't play music. Dss and ddil as hosts don't either. We talk. We eat. We talk some more. We nibble. I don't like background music either, but then I don't find silence to be uncomfortable.
  22. Welcome Penguin! That's the best reason to read a book, imo. :D
  23. When I was going through fertility treatments 20 years ago, I was asked about childhood diseases. Polio and smallpox were the only vaccines available when I was a kid - in my day (she said brandishing her cane) you did have to get the disease to get the immunity. My mother thought I had both measles and rubella (called German measles back then) but the titers I had showed no immunity to rubella. I was required to get the vaccine before beginning any fertility treatment.
