  1. Here is my schedule for 9th grade. I would really love some honest comments...too much...too little....High school is really stressing me out. I feel like I am missing something. We have always homeschooled but planned to send them to private school for high school and it just is not going to happen. So, I know part of my stress is just that our plan is changing. My ds is thrilled to continue to homeschool. Me? I don't know if I can do this. 9th grade schedule for ds Math - Finish Jacobs Algebra and move on to Geometry English - LotLR, 3rd yr AG, Vocab for the College Student Science - Apologia Chemistry Foreign Language - RS Spanish (co-op), inline Latin w/ Memoria PE - HS basketball team, karate, jump rope team History - Notgrass American World View/Philosophy Class (co-op) Extra curricular - Plays guitar for Sunday services Any comments/encouragements?
  2. We are officially going to homeschool for ds for 9th grade. We had seriously debated private school but it is just not going to happen. He has always been at home, but I am panicking now that we have reached high school. I really need to outsource his foreign language. I want to do an online Latin course. He has 3 yrs of RS spanish but not prior Latin. I am looking at Potter's vs. Veritas Press. I am stressing out over this, should I just flip a coin LOL. Seriously, any pros and cons to help me decide?
  3. How do you know if the books on your wishlist are part of the promotion? I went to the list of juvenile books and started scrolling thru them...is this the way to do this?
  4. I do this at least once every year with a small group of friends. We became friends thru MOPS many many years ago. It used to be a challenge to coordinate childcare since we all relied on each other to watch our kids, but we always managed to do it. Now it is a lot easier. I love going. My husband does not mind and is quite used to it. We have been going for almost 10 years. My advice is GO :auto:, invite some people you want to know better.
  5. I made this Chicken Tortilla Soup last month when my husband's family gathered at our house for a late lunch http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Slow-Cooker-Chicken-Tortilla-Soup/Detail.aspx It is REALLY good and supper easy. I had a yummy salad and different bread choices. I borrowed a crock pot from a friend so we had 2 crockpots full. My ds 12 who is picky now requests this.
  6. I searched the local MLS to see what was available and here is a link to a house in Whitwell TN. http://www.chattanoogamls.net/(tt5t1n55afuew0v2h0ynkjfg)/propertyDetails.aspx?mls=1126121 About 40 minutes from Chattanooga. It is warm in the summer but not oppressive. If you have seen the documentary Paper Clips then you may have heard of it. It is where the local middle school did a project on the Holocaust.http://www.paperclipsmovie.com/synopsis.php The area is very picturesque. I don't live there but have driven through on the way to a crafts festival.
  7. How funny! I had several items in mind but as I read each post....reminded me that I liked that too. I have a lot of Pampered Chef and think you pretty much can't go wrong. But here are my top 4: Mandolin cutter - expensive, but if it wears out, I will be buying another one. It makes perfectly sliced EVERYTHING! The Chopper thingy The Garlic Press The Cheese Grater - so much, that I have 2
  8. I can't say that I have dealt with that specific issue, but have had some in-law difficulties. I dealt with it by first being hurt and then confused but knew that I could not change them. I could change my heart on how I looked at it. It was then that I realized I was really mourning "a type of relationship" that never existed nor was it ever likely too. I had a vision of wonderful family memories, shopping trips, conversations that were never to happen. My mil has since passed away and my kids have very fond memories of her love of them and I am happy that is what they know. What I can do about this is to be a different kind of mother-in-law kwim? I am sorry for the pain they cause you. :grouphug:
  9. I have been a member of the PCA for the last 12 years. This best place for understanding the doctrine is going to be at a PCA church. We have relocated to different cities several times, each time going thru a visitors class before joining. This is an excellent place to go and learn and I think most PCA churches do this. Our church welcomes anyone to attend even if the end result is not membership for you. Ours is done over a weekend, Friday night, Saturday (1/2 day) and Sunday morning. I, too, believe that the terms free will and predestination get used or "misused" by some that do not fully understand the theology behind it. Catalinakel did an excellent job in her post. I wish I could say it so clearly.
  10. After reading the thread about laundry smelling from a front loader machine, it made me wonder...how do you clean that big rubber gasket thingy? What chemicals will remove the dirt?
  11. Definitely the Chattanooga Aquarium. The one ticket will get you in to both the salt water aquarium and the fresh water. They are right next to one another. Restaurants within walking distance would be Mellow Mushroom, TGIFs, Sticky Fingers, Big River Grill, Panera, plus lots more. Lupi's Pizza is REALLY good. We love the pizza and the calzones. The walking bridge is great and on the other side is Coolidge Park where there is a really cool fountain area that kids play in and a beautiful indoor carousel, I think$1 a ride? Just as the barns read you must See Rock City. My kids have always loved going. Have a great trip!
  12. Is it too late to get a copy? My ds will be 9th next year. moorerp@comcast.net
  13. Several of my friends drive the Honda van and really like it. The leg room for the driver and leg room in the back seats was the deciding factor for us. My husband is tall and we wanted to make sure we would be comfortable on trips. We ended up choosing the Toyota Sequoia. It did not make your list. We have had it for almost 5 yrs. with no problems and it drives like a dream. Very quiet and smooth. I love it and have no plans to change vehicles. Not great on gas though.
  14. I have painted the cabinets in 4 houses and here are the tricks that I have learned. Latex is easy to work with but the finish is not what I really like, but I am a detail person. Oil paint will give the best finish. Benjamin Moore sells a paint called Satin Impervo. I like the white dove color. It gives a beautiful finish, I use it for all my trim. Wash the cabinets really good. I use a sponge roller to put the paint on and then "lay it off" with a good brush. My most recent re-do was to paint dated oak cabinets. I did not want to have to prime so back to Benjamin Moore. This time I used a paint (oil) and no primer was needed. It is called IronClad. It worked great. The top cabinets are linen white and the bottom are black. Oh, and take the doors off to paint.
  15. I recently was struggling to find the perfect jean. I came across this website. It worked for me. I went right out and bought the jean that was recommended and they fit!!! http://www.zafu.com/
  16. I would make baked cheese grits and a green vegetable of some sort.
  17. A Walk in the Woods - by Bryson. It details his trip on the Appalachian Trail and is very funny.
  18. I make extra mashed potatoes just to have leftovers. My boys love potato cakes, actually better than mashed potatoes. I add salt, pepper, and flour (enough to be able to make patties without them sticking really bad to your hands). Then just fry them up in a pan with a little oil.
  19. I use the canned wide flat green beans add bacon grease (maybe 1-2 tsp), some dried minced onion, salt and pepper and then cook them for as long as it takes to make the rest of the meal, the longer the better. This is nothing special but just good ole southern style beans.
  20. Wow! That's great! I remember going to the playoffs with my high school. So, I say let her take a friend and take them! It is a great memory for me. I like the suggestion of going out to eat during the game if you don't want to be cold.
  21. Just made this one for the 1st time last week. It is rated REALLY HIGH with lots of reviews. It makes 2 loaves and 3 mini but you need 6 bananas. Make sure you add the crumb topping. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Banana-Sour-Cream-Bread/Detail.aspx?prop31=3
  22. We are a 2 dog family, both adopted from a rescue organization. The 1st came house broken and was about 6 months old. The 2nd as a 8 wk puppy. I think 2 dogs is the way to go but I cannot imagine trying to house train 2 at one time or pay for double shots. We had a beagle when we first got married. He was a great dog, lived to be 16. I think a companion would have been good for him. He chewed up furniture, remotes, carpet, even the walls. They need a good bit of exercise. Hope you like howling. All that said I love beagles. He had a great personality. Post some photos of the new pup.
  23. Glad you found it! I will have to give it a try. My MOST favorite recipe is from Paul Prudhomme and is called Chicken Tchoupitoulas. It is out of this world good! Enjoy your fettucine....
