  1. Have you read The Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon? I couldn't get into it, but it's often recommended here.
  2. I have an island and really like it. I am wondering about your triangle though. It looks a little unwieldy to me.
  3. I just checked my old posts. Looks like one week is the cutoff.
  4. Or it could mean he read many articles on those themes. From the rest of the article it seems to me he's pretty well informed on Kohn's writings.
  5. :iagree: The difficulty is finding the line everyone is comfortable with. I also wonder if many of these girls are just very naive and don't fully understand how they appear to boys, when they really are just trying to look pretty.
  6. The issue of modest clothing is discussed frequently here. Several posters have commented on the fact that girls can dress modestly and still be very provocative in manner. I don't think we've discussed that issue at all. I'm really interested in how parents address that. It's easy to make rules about clothing, but much more difficult to have "rules" about behavior. What if they seem to enjoy being thought of as a s*x object by boys? I see girls around here on a daily basis that are acting very provocatively, yet they aren't dressed inappropriately. These are girls with caring, involved parents, so it's not as if they are being raised by tramps.
  7. I interpreted that very differently.
  8. I like what Daniel Willingham has to say about Alfie Kohn. Alfie Kohn Is Bad for You and Dangerous For Your Children I much prefer the writings and ideology of ED Hirsch and Daniel Willingham.
  9. I've never had much luck with them. I used Craigslist for the first time last week, and made $150 in 48 hours by selling a TV, armoire, and ottoman. I was a little uncomfortable having people come to the house so made appointments for when dh would be around. It was way easier than a garage sale, or loading up a truck to take it to Goodwill.
  10. I wonder what foods they included here. If this is all we ate, it would cost over $30 a day per person. I spend a lot on food, but not THAT much.
  11. You might have broken it. Go get an xray. :grouphug:
  12. I'm glad this is working for you, but the study didn't actually say anything about fried foods. They did find that higher fat intake for the first meal of the day had a positive effect on metabolic parameters and decreased overeating later in the day in mice. It may or may not be applicable to people, but that hasn't been tested yet. I don't think they specified exactly what types of fats they used, but they didn't specifically test fried foods. If I were to change my diet based on this study, I'd increase the amounts of healthy fats at breakfast- olive oil, nuts, peanut butter, omega-3s. Here's an article: :auto:
  13. I recently read Under the Dome, and it made me want to read some of his other stuff. I read The Stand years ago and loved it. What do you consider his best books? Thanks.
  14. This is what I was taught too. But I always wondered when and why they stopped being created. Are numbers of fat cells genetically determined, or is it determined by childhood eating habits? No one could ever answer that. I also wonder how we know we don't create more fat cells. It's quite possibly true, but I always question these pearls of conventional wisdom, because they often turn out not to be true. Just musing.
  15. There's also the issue of danger. Lots of normal, healthy women with normal, healthy babies have died in childbirth, so I disagree with the assumption that it's not dangerous.
  16. I disagree with #1. Birth for most women hurts. You don't really need another example.
  17. I believe that we're actually safer now than in the past. But I also think that it's possible that this is a result of parents supervising their children more closely now.
