  1. Yes you can have shingles after having chickenpox. I will say that I have never known anyone who had shingles without intense, mind-boggling, horrible pain. I suppose it could.happen, but shingles is the single most painful thing I've ever experienced.
  2. Yup - I have a family member that will reliably be found in the restroom when its time to wash dishes. It's a family joke now - but my earliest memories of extended family dinners is looking for this person and always finding them in the restroom. Her kids are the same way now.
  3. Several months ago there was a thread about what medical care was being because because it couldnt be afforded. Anyone remember that? What struck me was that a LOT of people had insurance but couldn't afford the copays/deductibles. Does this fix.that in anyway? Even if the gov is subsidizing the premiums that doesn't cover the $25 or $50 copays or the $10,000 deductible.
  4. With my reluctant reader I had to (and still have to) work really hard to find good boher her sisters haven't read over and over. My older two are voracious readers and dd3 is much more reluctant. Even though she is reading well now, the 'competition' of reading something her sisters loved will freeze her. I wish I could solve this - but I think its just part of her personality. Something I hope she outgrows soon. The plus is that we've found some good books that aren't ypur typical readers.
  5. Is the FSA amount per family or per person? That doesn't make any sense at all to me to reduce that amount. I've got 3 coming up to braces in the next 2 years and I was looking forward to a little bit of a tax break putting the money in a FSA.
  6. We have a Sony device that has Youtube and we can connect it to the computer- we can stream our Amazon movies or anything else from the computer to the tv. Love it!
  7. BOXER! They are super sweet, easy to train (a little stubborn, but smart), very laid back but fun to play with, super protective. Our cat rules our dog even though he could eat her in a heartbeat if he chose. He never chases animals at my parent's house even though he isn't a farm dog himself. We just tell him no and he listens. I don't know that we'll ever have a different breed. I love my boxer.
  8. I wouldn't worry terribly much about it unless the rash touched your baby directly. I came down with shingles the week before dd3 was born. It was on my ribcage and would touch her when I was nursing. I was told just to keep it covered so she didn't come directly in contact with the rash. She didn't get sick.
  9. DS is supposed to wipe down the baseboards on cleaning day. We have a dog that sheds a lot and th hair all sticks to them for some reason. Anyway, I sat down with him to help and got to looking at my walls. Holy guacamole! About waist high there is a grey streak where we all apparently rub our hands on the walls. And the doorframes at that level! Horrifying! I had never noticed before, but I have a huge pile of magic erasers for cleaning day tomorrow! The kids are going to love me! Under the fridge and stove only get cleaned when we move.
  10. There have been many times when I felt I *should* do something and I didn't want to. I'd love to say I always do the thing I should even when I don't want to, but sometimes I just don't. (Shades of Romans in that statement there!) While there haven't been any catastrophic results I'm certain some of the results are less than ideal, kwim? When I think about what could have been I'm usually able to see where it would have been better if I had just done what I knew was the right thing.
  11. I would do a gift certificate to a Bare Escentuals store - or maybe even ULTA or Sephora. I would imagine you could make an appointment to go in and have someone advise you on what makeup to use, how to apply etc. At Sephora in Dallas they would always do some makeup for my kids while I shopped - just for fun.
  12. one*mom shared this recipe - I'll be starting it this afternoon. Lots of pieces and parts, but I can't wait! Darkest Chocolate Crepe Cake
  13. Thank you! I didn't think I'd ever figure this out and was to embarrassed to ask dh!
  14. For some reason, my enter key isn't working -random! Anyway, I haven't read the whole thread, but just knowing some about Ron Paul - I don't think the statement means homeschooling = libertarian. I think it's just that willingness to not accept that what the gov. offers is the best and the willingness to do something about it that that will lead to hsers making differences in our country. KWIM?
  15. Dd will be 13 in January and will be getting a phone then. She knows that so I bought her a cute little Betsy Johnson phone purse. Other than that I am clueless. She would love some Hollister clothes, but I can in no way justify paying $50 for a hoodie that she'll get tired of in a month. I've considered getting her a gift card to. A consignment store here. That's somewhat better than buying used clothing for Christmas- right? I may get her a poster of her favorite band. Boots maybe. She is the one stressing me out this year.
  16. If there is any way you can - swimming really helped my dd get back to full use of her arm. She didn't spend all of her time worrying about falling and reinjuring herself and even just playing helped her regain strength and flexibility. Her cast came off in August and we spent a lot of time at the pool.
  17. I have a Kirby we bought 10 years ago. I love it. The only maintenance we've had is new belts. Well worth the money and you can easily find them used. Plus it is also a carpet shampooer. Absolutely the best for your money.
  18. My dd broke out in hives with strep throat. That was the only symptom - no sore throat, no fever - just hives. Just another possibility!
  19. Dh and I have gotten two letters stating we have an unclaimed escrow account from a house in 2007. These letters are from lawyers, not the mortgage company we used. It's not an insignificant amount of money and of course, the letters both say they will file the paperwork to have the funds returned for a 1% fee. Surely there's a way we can do this ourselves? Would we just contact the mortgage company? We still have all the paperwork from the sale of the house and all of our info from the mortgage company. Any ideas?
  20. We went to Jekyll Island last spring and it was fantastic. We just did a day trip - we were staying in Savannah- but wish we had longer. Gorgeous!
  21. We make pumpkin butter and apple butter to take as hostess gifts during the holidays.
