  1. OP: I have nothing to add to this other than thank you. In our modern, quasi-tribal world, I think you've willingly stepped into a minefield. Thank you for valuing the people who raised you and for sharing your experiences with those who have opened their homes and hearts to children from other places. Finances prevented us from adopting from across the world (we are American), but I refuse to think of those who do as evil interlopers. Truly, thank you for sharing your thoughts. Edited to add: How I wish we could truly evaluate one another as individuals!
  2. It may be the dog's age. Look into canine development and fear phases. HTH.
  3. On the other hand, I can, after several years home, put my law school training in the Socratic method to good use! I agree with the PPs: stick with it. It may be new, but it is a skill that can be developed.
  4. :iagree: This. We hike regularly. Our Buddy HATES the leash; how is a poor dog to guard the pack in such a ridiculous formation??? He much prefers when we are on our own property and he can circle the group properly, as God intended. (BTW, we have no dominance issues-he's a lamb [well, with us and introduced guests]). And if he bolts after a deer, he returns on a whistle. The GSD is the best darn family dog ever!)
  5. Me, too. I only have one DD, but I share the results and discuss them with her. This year, I went over her scores for the past three years to show how I use the scores to track her development over time. Likewise, I used them to highlight areas of improvement (ie, "Do you really think that the basic math questions were a problem area, or do you think that maybe you thought they were really easy and didn't pay attention?" For the 974th time. Sigh.) My DD looks forward to testing time, though, because she gets to do the OLSAT on the last day and it's so much fun (seriously.) For us, the scores are a useful tool to share. I suspect, like so many things, it depends on the child.
  6. Excuse me, but could you please get cracking? My DD's history schedule isn't going to plan itself and you don't expect ME to do it, do you? :toetap05: :tongue_smilie: (On a serious note, thank you so much for your generosity!)
  7. :iagree: This is excellent advice. (For reference, I have a limited background in estates as an attorney.) Best wishes to you during this challenging time. :grouphug: Edited to add: Depending upon the state in which you live, the checklist you seek may be on the state's court's website.
  8. Woodland Mist: We have experience with separate levels of Saxon. For background, I posted above in #8. That covers my summary. (All other readers, especially the die hard Saxon types, please also note my caveat above.) We tried Saxon in 3rd grade and nearly died. Both I and DD hated it. She was in a BM Christian school last year and used Saxon 7/6 and 8/7. She still hated it. Hated, HATED, HATED it. Again, to repeat my caveat above (and hopefully to forestall the abuse): Saxon is a great program for many kids. BUT, it depends on the child. My child thrives with a mastery approach; Math Mammoth was her friend. So, know your student and consider taking advantage of the samples. HTH.
  9. It's is AWESOME when a stuffed buffalo accompanies an almost-twelve year old everywhere she goes. Especially since said buffalo is highly creative and stars in videos of his exploits. Which is really nice when mama is not on the trip. : ) It is less than awesome when the stuffed buffalo HIDES during a sleepover and mama has to go and retrieve him from the friend's house at 9 o'clock at night. Thank goodness for understanding friend-parents!
  10. I would not attend a bible study if I knew that the group had a scriptural view with which I strongly disagreed. If I were invited (and have had similar issues), I would just say "No, thank you. But thank you for thinking of me."
  11. Has anyone used this? If so, how did it work for you? Over what time frame did you use it? I am considering this for 7th and 8th and would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

  13. Ah, memories! We moved from a triple-digit summer kind of place a few years back. Now we're in a heat wave...y'know, it might get up to 90 degrees again today. I'm not missing the prior abode. I'll think hard about the ICE we had to deal with last winter and try to send cool thoughts southward!
  14. Being a perfect parent, I will share with you the answer to your challenge: Duct tape. And wine. Lots of wine. But especially the duct tape. (Although I must confess that I pretty much think that duct tape is the answer to just about any problem. :001_smile: ) :grouphug: On your extremely awful very bad day!
  15. Bodies of kidnapped teenagers found. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/06/30/bodies-israeli-kidnapped-teens-found-government-confirms/
  16. Caveat: Saxon is an excellent program that works well for many students. But...it does not work well for all. It uses a spiral-incremental approach, which could also be described as "dribs and drabs," say, by my DD. It does NOT work for her. In fact, it makes her utterly insane. She requires a mastery approach and the more conceptual the better. You might want to take advantage of samples. Let your DC take a look and get their input as to what works.
  17. I, too, began homeschooling through a charter. Our teaching advisor steered us away from TT for the same reason. A friend allowed her DD to use TT for, I believe, two years. A school math placement test prior to a brief BM schooling experience sent them to Saxon upon the child's return home. I know that TT does work for some families, but I would approach it with caution. I think that it would be important to know the student's long-term math goals and be sure that TT would meet those goals. Edit: The friend's child mentioned above was at the 7th grade/pre-algebra stage at the time of the placement test.
  18. Me, too. I had to search "Mardel." Looks fabulous.
