Help with Math for DS 10th grader
TheApprentice replied to a topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Is he against working via the computer? Derek Owens has math courses thru Calculus and the classes are self-paced. You can purchase the Algebra course, but the remaining courses are distant learning. Currently it is $58/month. But the student watches the videos, turns in the assignments and gets a grade. Derek Owens keeps a running transcript, and if you/student has questions, you e-mail him. He usually returns the e-mail within a day or two. My son has used it for 3 courses with great success. Worth checking out if he doesn't mind learning on the computer. -
My ds read it in 9th grade. I would think middle school would be too young, even for an advanced reader, which my son is as well. Aside from the little amount of sex depicted, the topic is pretty heavy to comprehend.

Tomorrow is suppose to be our first day.

We too are starting tomorrow. The boys are not ready at all. We won't be doing everything, and hopefully we'll be done by noon (8:00am start time). -
New at homeschooling...3 children...desperately need help!
TheApprentice replied to Blessed5x's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Welcome. :seeya: For Language Arts, I would recommend checking out Writing With Ease and First Language Lessons. Offered by Peace Hill Press. For History, Peace Hill Press also has Story of the World. Volume 1 is Ancients. I would suggest buying the book and activity guide, not the tests. For those ages, you don't need the tests. These are products recommend in the WTM and you can do them with probably all three of the children. You can also get SOTW via audio. If Saxon is what you are comfortable with, go with it. I would just start with the main subjects (3R's) and then add on as you become more comfortable. If you do a search "Kindergarten thread", "2nd grade" and "3rd grade", you will get ideas from what others are using, and then take some time and research. Don't feel like you need to do it all at once. :001_smile: -

My middle ds will be using Lightning Literature (7th grade) this fall. In the TM, they offer a weekly schedule. I asked my son if he was comfortable planning his daily schedule based on the weekly schedule, and he said no. So this is something I'll need to work on in the 1st semester, because by the time he gets to 8th grade, it will be something he needs to do. I have no problem giving my 5th grade son a daily planner, but he often works ahead (We use a weekly planner that shows what is to be expected the entire week). They both check the work off the planner as it gets completed. My high schooler works from a syllabus, and his weekly/daily planning is his total responsibility. As long as I can get my younger 2 at this point by high school, what we currently do is fine.

We used McGruffy for K and 1st. It's fun, easy to implement, not overwhelming for the child, and it use's games/manipulatives to help solidify the topics. While it may look too easy, it was extremely effective for my ds at the time who had no problems moving to MM in the 2nd grade. I felt this program was great for the kindergarten age/attention span.

Great family park. Clean. The kid rides/exhibits are interspersed with the adult rides, so the family can stay together. It's not too large/overwhelming. The water park can get a bit crowded, but it's still well manned, and the wait isn't too long. We didn't go this year, but have been the 3 previous years. I would definitely recommend going.

Close, next Monday, the 5th. I'm finishing up some planning details, but I can see change in our future.

TC - Chemistry videos w/ Spectrum
TheApprentice replied to Blossom'sGirl's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We'll probably go with Khan Academy videos to supplement, but only if needed. Ds's load is big, and if he's not understanding Spectrum's explanations, we'll turn to Khan Academy, otherwise I'll not have him do one more thing. -
Another Irasshai ?

Elegantlion, what Japanese/English dictionary did you use? If you didn't use one, has one been suggested to you?

how many push-ups can you do in 90 seconds? On your knees or toes. That is our challenge in my boot camp class tonight. The goal: 100. I'm not even close.

9th grade curriculum feedback
TheApprentice replied to StinkyDaddy's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
We've used Derek Owens in the past as well, but if your son is interested in engineering, I'm not sure he should be taking Physical Science. That's more of a middle school course. My son took DO's Physics course in the 9th grade, and since it's Algebra based (as opposed to Calculus), he did really well. Your son could take Algebra and Physics concurrently and do well. So your science track would look something like: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, then an advanced science. You don't have any literature listed. We are using Excellence in Literature: American Literature this year, but you could also check out The WTM's (book) on the literature suggestions for this age. Latin is fine, but most colleges want to see a living language on the transcript covered a minimum of 2 years. As an elective, your son could enroll in AoPS's intro. to programming. My son did it this past spring semester and really enjoyed it. JMHO. :001_smile: I'm sure you'll get other suggestions. -
You can do full body workouts if you want, just make sure you have a days rest in-between. In the past, I've done whole body workouts on M, W, and F; Cardio on T, Th, Sun., and yoga Saturday. Currently, my routine is: chest/back/shoulders on Monday; arms on Tuesday; legs on Thursday. Some form of core/abs daily. Cardio is done on Tuesday, Thur. and Sunday (spin class, kick boxing, elliptical); Yoga on Saturday. I have to change it up, otherwise it becomes boring.

:crying: :grouphug: It's a very hard decision to make, but one that can be very humane. I've been there, twice.

A bit of a silly question about exercise . . .
TheApprentice replied to MomOfOneFunOne's topic in The Chat Board
That's being physically active. According to the instructor in the Coursera class I'm taking, exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and performed with the goal of improving health and fitness. All physical activity is NOT exercise; but all exercise IS physical activity. -
well that is how we have always played it
TheApprentice replied to Melissa in Australia's topic in The Chat Board
We've always followed that rule. It's in the instructions for the game, and of course I have to read through the rules first.
