  1. Sounds like it's tough for many. He's definitely going to have to step outside the box. For the jobs he applied for online, he did go to those businesses in person first and was told to apply on-line. So frustrating.
  2. how did he/she obtain it? I have taken ds around town applying for jobs, and all have said to apply on-line. He fills out the application, but then nothing. We have not gotten a single call to ask for an interview. Ds is 16 and wants a part-time job. Apparently, it's still "who you know" and he doesn't have an "in" anywhere? I need to think outside the box because this way isn't working. Any ideas? :confused1: :bigear:
  3. Thanks. That helps a lot. I'm not sure ds wants to take the AP test. I was actually considering as you did, more for the advanced learning/honors course.
  4. If your dc has used this, what is your experience with it? I can't seem to have any luck looking up old threads on the topic. I'm considering this for ds in the fall. Are there any labs? Does it use a text?
  5. I had a question about our subscription the other day, so I sent an email. I got a call from John Zimmerman this morning. My son is learning a lot from this curriculum, but now I like it even more because of the great personal customer service. :hurray: It's such a breath of fresh air to experience great customer service.
  6. My son quit Boy Scouts. No regrets. I was a little upset, like you, but my son was fine and he never looked back.
  7. I liked the article. It seems that individual's are picking out little specific examples to make their point (here and the comments at the end of the blog). To me, he was just suggesting that women, in general, and society as a whole, need to stop undermining each other. He wasn't trying to argue about how "hard" or "busy" it is to being a SAHM, He was just simply stating that it is "Just" endeavor. What's the point in making distinctions, like one life choice is: better, more important, more fulfilling, etc... This mommy war is quite exhausting.
  8. All my boys do all the problems. Youngest ds uses MM5, middle ds uses Tablet Class Pre-Algebra/Algebra, oldest ds uses Saxon Advanced Math.
  9. Gecko's are not really hands-on type of pet. They move extremely fast, and are difficult to catch. My neighbor had a gecko that escaped, her husband was out of town, and she asked my husband to come help her catch. It got caught, but it was very difficult. I've taken care of it a few times their family was on vacation, and just opening the catch to change the water can be risky. They are basically just pets to look at and admire.
  10. A lot of the material I use have suggested schedules. The ones that don't, I usually count the pages in the book (or what I want to cover in the book) and divide it by the number of days in our school year. For example, with MM5, some days we cover 2 pages and other days we cover 3 pages. This pace will allow us to complete the curriculum. With Lightning Literature, they offer a weekly schedule, and I break it down to bite size pieces for ds, still getting what is suggested to have completed in that week done.
  11. So, based on both responses, it really isn't recommended to go to JA from MM5. Thanks for the suggestions.
  12. My youngest ds will be finishing MM5 this year. Would Jousting with Armadillos be something we could transition to, or should I continue on with MM6? He does ok with MM5, I'm just not sure the approach is working as well with him as did my middle ds, so I'm looking for a change.
  13. These are what's up for consideration: Math - Jousting with Armadillos or MM6 Science - Elemental Science: Earth Science Logic stage/Chemistry Grammar Stage History - Famous Men of Rome or Ancient Times with Beautiful Feet Language - LLATL or a combination of Hake Grammar, Various Literature I choose and Write Smith (or Jump in) Spelling - Soaring with Spelling Latin - First Form Latin 1(again) Logic - Orbiting with Logic
  14. I too would suggest looking into TabletClass. My son is currently using it for Pre-Algebra, having 1 more section to complete, and he's doing really well with it. The material is pretty advanced for this level, but ds is not have much of a problem. The problem sets for completion are not overmuch at all, and the solutions are well explained. I have experience with Derek Owens as well. My older son used this program, and he too did really well. You can purchase the pre-algebra course (the remaining math courses are distant learning). The videos by Derek Owens are very well explained and easy to follow. Other options to consider: Kinetic Books Math (no teacher manual) Thinkwell Art of Problem Solviing Jousting Armadillos (3 book set)
  15. I'm in the planning stages for the fall. My word, does time fly. Anyway, I need a list of books that are not fluff, but not overly much. For example, the Memoria Press study guide list suggested for 6th grade are too difficult for my ds at this time, especially, The Hobbit and Treasure Island. So, I'm wanting to put together a solid list of 8-10 books that are interesting and more on his reading level, for example, Tuck Everlasting and The Bridge to Teribithia.
  16. My oldest son is 16, and he's turning out to be a nice young man. He too, still plays videos too much, but he's doing well in school, no girlfriend, no drugs or drinking, looking for a job, and doesn't mind hanging with his mom, still. But I was doing some college research yesterday, and realizing that in 2 years, he will be out. I'm right there with you. :(
  17. I've been on this forum and the college forum for the past two years and lurking on College Confidential for a while that I've gained a bit of cynicism, and I just getting started. :glare: So yeah, I'm not really buying what they're selling. I just need to help my son realize that all of these schools don't really "want" you. It's a business.
  18. and he's just a sophomore. So my questions are: Have any of the mailings been schools you would have never considered and now are on your short list? Do you some how make a spreadsheet to organize it all so that it doesn't become overwhelming, or do you just chuck it? Do you do the weeding out, or do you let your dc do it?
  19. Uhh, No. It is not your husband's responsibility to shut "C" up.
  20. Thanks for the feedback. I don't want to push math, I just want to follow a logical path. Having him do College Alg. then Pre-Cal. followed by Cal. I and II in his senior year sounds like a great idea. Definitely something to consider.
  21. Good suggestion about the summer course. He will start his first course next week (Computer Programming). So he will have some experience with college pace, just not in math.
  22. So the way Saxon Advanced Math is set up, you complete lessons 1-90 the first year and call it Geometry/Advanced Algebra. The second year, you go back to lesson 60, repeat those lessons and then complete lessons 1-25 in the Pre-Calculus book and call that year "Pre-Calculus". So here is where I am. DS is using Art Reed videos, but he says he feels he needs more live instruction in math for the next 2 years (he's in 10th grade). I was considering having him take pre-calculus at the Community College in the fall (he's taken the placement tests and would be eligible). Would college level pre-calculus be the next step here, or should he take College level algebra?
  23. Mine felt like severe menstrual cramps and lower back pain. It was that way for all 3 labors.
  24. Being new to homeschooling can be daunting, and so I understand you wanting to keep it simple with 3 dc (and adding 1 in the near future). My advice early is to do what works for your family, not so much what is "popular". So if CLE Math works for your children, I'd use it. If Saxon works for your family, I'd use it. My oldest ds, doing 10th grade level work, is currently using Saxon Advanced Math. He's doing really well, and did extremely well on the math portion on the PSAT. An option for you to considering would be Derek Owen's classes (distant learning), especially for your older dc because it goes through high school and it's very independent. The biggest take away from my post is to do what works for YOU and your children.
