  1. Here is a link to another list that tells which ones require statements of faith etc.
  2. To homeschool here you have to go through a cover school, which to get around Alabama laws have to be under a church. There are some very basic cover schools that are under the direction of their own "church" but have no faith requirements etc.
  3. My K aged son finished the HWT first grade book in December (we skipped the Kindergarten book since he knew all his capital letters and really wanted to learn lower case). Since then we have just been doing copy work on HWT paper. At first we started off with just a few words that had letters that I had to correct him on the day before in some of his other writing. So if he had reversed a b then his words would be - baby, ball, daddy, dinosaur Once he got to the point that he could copy those quickly and correctly we moved on to simple sentences of 3-4 words. Now he is to the point where I let him make up a sentence. So he makes up a silly sentence and I write it for him to copy - Today's sentence was - Why did the chicken go to the bathroom? I'm sure next weeks will be some awful conclusion to his joke.
  4. No school here today either. Today started off badly with all the kids in bad moods, followed by the three bigger ones eating 2/3 of a carton of frozen yogurt while I took a shower, then realizing that I had a ton of errands that had to be done today with 3 sugared up kids. The good things about today were that we impressed a lot of people at Costco while we ate lunch and all 4 kids were well behaved. The ederly man sitting at the table next to us made a comment about how well behaved they were and asked if he could buy them a pack of m&m's from the vending machine. I unfortunately had to tell him no thank you due to the ice cream incident from the morning. Plus my 5 year old spent all of quiet time teaching the 3 year old how to play trouble and then playing hi ho cherry-o with her when she got tired of trouble.
  5. Yes, they have found some Iodine, but it's nothing to worry about. It's 5000 times less than the amount that the FDA has listed as in need of action. Iodine has a half life of 8 days, by the time that the milk is used for anything and then consumed the levels will be almost gone. http://www.cnn.com/2011/HEALTH/03/31/radiation.us/index.html?hpt=T2 From NY TIMES Radioactive materials in liquids are measured in pico-curies per liter, and the sample, taken March 25, showed a reading of 0.8 pico-curies, the agency said. Those numbers, it said, would have to be 5,000 times higher to reach the “intervention level” set by the Food and Drug Administration. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/31/us/31milk.html?_r=1&ref=us
  6. You might want to check out the square foot gardening book. It has a great ideas for planting in a small space and a great soil mix that makes it so you wouldn't have to dig down and don't have to go as deep.

  8. I have better luck with raising my Vit D level with OTC supplements than I have with the prescription Vit D. The prescription is D2 which isn't absorbed as well as D3 which is what you find in the OTC supplements. While pregnant with my last baby I was down around 14, 3 rounds of the prescription pills only got me up into the upper 20s/low 30's. After taking the OTC (4000 IU daily) for about a month I was in the 40's. I have now been taking the OTC supplements for 6 months and am due for another test this month. Hopefully it will be a lot higher.
  9. Looks great! If you do ETC with him just be prepared to do some of the writing for him or have him not do the writing parts. At the beginning of this year we would do alternate ETC and HWT so that my 5 yo wasn't having to do so much writing in one day. He loves ETC so much that he wants to do it everyday. Some days I would do the writing for him. I would just have him spell the words to me and I would write them down. I also did some lessons where I let him use letter stamps to stamp out the words or dot stickers where I wrote the letters on them. The dot stickers were a favorite of his. I just spent an evening writing letters on sheet after sheet of dot stickers and he loves to use those to do his spelling and ETC.
  10. Tell them that you don't want anything to be inventoried as Packed By Owner. Most companies won't insure anything that they list that way. We had some plastic storage totes that they just taped around the wrote PBO on the inventory. Of course those were the ones that missing and they wouldn't insure them. The packers are not happy when you insist this so if you have a bunch of stuff in totes make sure that your estimates include packing those items and then be ready to stand over them to makes sure that those things get packed in their boxes. We also only had stuff go missing when our stuff was put into storage. Our direct move only resulted in one piece going missing but it was found at the house they dropped off before ours and the moving company eventually got it to us. Our move into storage resulted in a lot more damage and 4 large storage totes going MIA (mainly DH's tools :( )
  11. My almost 6 year old (should be Kindy) has been working on ETC since the fall and we just completed book 3. We are starting Book 4 now and I hope to have through book 6 completed by next year at this time. We are also using AAS so most of what we do in ETC is a written review of what we have already done in AAS.
  12. Angela - I loved your posts about RSO. I can't wait to start it next year with my son. I know he is going to love it. My son saw your post about making the blood and can't wait until he gets to do that.

  15. Boscopup - You may want to take your link down. It looks like it is linking directly into your account on their site.
  16. With my K/1st grader I use AAS 1. Our lessons take about 15 minutes three times a week. First day we review cards that he needs review on (not many - takes us about 2 minutes), then we do the new teaching for the lesson. This takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes depending on the rule and how many of the words he already knows, then he spells about half of the words on with the tiles. 2nd day - Review the new rule and then spell the 10 words on paper along with 3 phrases 3rd day - Spell 5 of the additional words given to check that he knows the new rule and then write 5 more phrases. We go through about a step a week, but since he is so young we do about 3-4 steps then take a week to review old words to make sure that he remembers what he has learned.
  17. We have small kids and I wish we would have gone with leather rather than microfiber. Our couch looks HORRIBLE and we have only had it 3 years. I will replace it with leather as soon as we remodel the living room and figure out how big of a couch that we want. I hate the microfiber - It looked good for the first year, but then it went down hill quickly!
  18. I hope the sleet isn't heading north - DH and the kids are having leftovers while I go out for my weekly dinner and coffee with a friend.
  19. Two wasted days here this week. Thankfully I just have a K'er so it's no big deal to have a bad week. Between the baby keeping me up all night, and the 5 year old needing a few attitude problems worked on we haven't done much "school" work this week. Thank goodness for educational computer games and some decent enough weather to throw them out in the yard for awhile.
  20. My happy moment of the day - I got a real smile for the first time from my newest babe!
  21. Yes - My parents always come here for Thanksgiving since we make the drive to their house for Christmas.
  22. My K'er is doing OPGTR, ETC 2 and AAS 1.
