  1. I have no experience but I was thinking you could make a sign about perfect stocking stuffers and/or showing school pride at sports games. People start thinking about these things in the fall. Good luck!
  2. Pass me a Martinelli's sparkling apple juice, please.
  3. I like the above suggestion to go with the 15 year and put away the extra $100. If I was in your position I would do the above. If we ended up in a real pickle I would borrow the money for the college expenses I promised. Not that I would like that, but I'd rather be in a position right now of maybe having to borrow money in case of a problem down the road, rather than automatically spending more money to avoid it.
  4. I'm not fasting for medical reasons. DH has been doing well. DD has taken it upon herself to "fast" until noon everyday. The temps here have been in the 70s during the day and the upper 50s at night so it's been easy in that sense, but the days are long. Iftar is not until after 8:30 right now, after about 16 hours of fasting.
  5. Umm, how do we know you're not a cat? Frankly with the username and the photo I'm getting suspicious. You seem to know a lot about this.
  6. As far as online tutoring, I've never done it. But perhaps you could offer someone (privately or advertised elsewhere) Skype sessions to help with their writing. I think quite a bit can be done via Skype and email or Google Docs. Maybe offer it for very low cost and increase your price as you gain references? Advertise on homeschool blogs or wherever it's allowed?
  7. I'm sorry. :grouphug: Do you have any interest in starting your own teaching web site with homeschool clients over the internet?
  8. Melanie got most of my suggestions but I'll add enchiladas. Fill them, roll them, pour the sauce over the top, and then just bake when you're an hour before dinner. Also in the summer outdoor grilling can be fun. You're still cooking with guests there, but it's more social.
  9. Yes, that addressed my question, thank you. I thought of another question. (Sorry.) Is the goal to create an adult who behaves in this manner wrt using materials, concentration, etc. In an ideal world in which a child had done a full Montessori education for however high it goes, would that adult then not listen to the radio while driving? Or listen to a podcast while doing dishes? Is the idea than an adult is also most benefitted by correctly using materials and concentration? And if so, do you see that in the real world? Do Montessori-educated adults do one thing at a time, try not to entertain themselves simply for entertainment, etc?
  10. I would be unwilling to rely on the idea of her getting married, having children, and staying home. It's becoming more rare for those 3 things happening in the desired order and in a reasonable timeframe. Here's some Pew research from 2011: http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2011/12/14/marriage-rate-declines-and-marriage-age-rises/ Here's another study I've come across: http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/2014/02/11/the-rising-cost-of-not-going-to-college/ Her dream is based on a lot of assumptions. Marriage rates are very low now and she can't make it happen by herself; even if she's willing, many young men are not. What if she or her husband cannot conceive? What if they lose their child? What if he leaves her or dies? What if he loses his job? I think without an AA degree or some sort of trade training, you would be doing her a disservice.
  11. I also don't understand. It seems like other posters chimed in with a stronger position than wonderchica but she's catching the flack. Maybe people should specify who they are replying to. Wonderchica never said anything about servants, writing reviews on Yelp, sending letters, etc.
  12. If there's an age window for this type of interest, how is that reconciled with the multi-age classroom? Or are you saying that the older children were introduced at an optimal time and even though that window has passed for them they still retain enough interest to assist children who are currently in that window?
  13. FYI, Iceland abolished the death penalty in 1928. Try to hold out. ;)
