  1. Just add small amounts and f baking soda. I'm thinking 1/4 teaspoon. Stir it in. It will foam. Let it cook for a while. If the beans aren't softening add a bit more.
  2. Hopping in to respond to Lanny. Universal has a third park but it won't open until May. I think it's a water park.
  3. Anything that builds confidence and skills. Sports. Odyssey of the Mind. Robotics. Physics Circus. How big of a commitment are you wanting?
  4. I've seen really fast results in my thighs by doing HIIT on the stationary bike. I didn't really notice if the effects were elsewhere.
  5. So am I the only one that likes to vary my menus taking the weather into account? Some days are cold and call for stew or chili, some weather requires hot starchy things, etc. For example I spent part of last week in Florida and eating out. I came home wanting salads and grilled meats. But I got home just in time to hit the empty grocery stores before the blizzard. No more salad cravings. Theoretically I can vary things within a weekly plan but lately our weather has been all over the place.
  6. There aren't many restaurants. Those that are there aren't great and may be closed until later in the season. Be prepared to do most of your own cooking other than fast food. If you have bikes bring them! It's nice and flat. In the summer months they close "the loop" to car traffic at certain hours so you can bike on paved roadway, see the wildlife, and not worry about cars. I don't know if they do that off season. The beaches are great for shell collecting.
  7. My DH uses his smart phone like this. He's had one since the 1990's and we call it his external brain. Honestly we'd probably be divorced without it. A note of caution: Neither of my teens, who really, really need the help were capable of using the tools a smart phone provided. First, they can set alarms and whatnot but they don't DO what the alarm is reminding them about. The maturity wasn't there. Second, there are distractions available that have been designed to be addictive. That's tough for any teenager. Currently dd has had her smart phone confiscated and replaced with a flip phone. She's almost 17 and can't handle it. Obviously YMMV but I want to give you a heads up.
  8. I was having this problem. I thought it was related to female hormone imbalance but my doc prescribed me a small dose of T4 only thyroid medicine to take at lunch. I was skeptical but three weeks into it t is helping appreciably!
  9. In the far past beano worked for me. Then I didn't need it after I took probiotics and ate fermented foods for a while. Now I have huge digestion problems (since last April) and have begun taking a supplement once a day with multiple enzymes to aid digestion but also ox bile. It works very well. Now I'm down to half tablets. I think I bought it at Whole Foods. It's called Daily Digestive. I take it on a full stomach at lunch or I get heartburn from it.
  10. Is there a Maker Space near you? Or maybe à college lab?
  11. Most docs recommend it during the time your own hormones are changing. Once in full menopause I think opinions are more mixed. Some of it depends on the risks that run in your family.
  12. We love lady fingers or sponge cake layered with custard, canned peaches, seedless raspberry jam, and blue berries. Then generously sprinkled with cream sherry. Whipped cream in top. Oh my. Now I want to make one. Or rather, eat some.
  13. I have both a pressure cooker and a crockpot. The estimate the church gave us was 40 people plus 15 staff. That's probably a maximum. There will also be ground beef taco meat available for the tacos. The local churches take turns throughout the cold season hosting the hypothermia shelter for a week. So it's not a regular shelter. I am not overly concerned with making too much. I'm sure someone can take it or I can freeze it. Bambam I think I can work with cups of beans rather than pounds. That recipe looks good but I think I'd add fat of some sort to up the calorie count in the cold weather. Maybe just add some olive oil when I'm mashing them.
  14. Good Morning, I know some of you have experience making really large batches of food so I'm hoping you can advise me. I need to make refried beans for 55 for taco night at the hypothermia shelter. I plan to start with dried beans. How many pounds of dried beans do I need? If you have an actual recipe I'd be very grateful if you shared it with me. When making small batches for my family I generally don't use a recipe. Thank you, Sandra
  15. I am a very loud sneezer. I feel that if I "held it back" I'd blow out my eardrums. It's just my normal.
  16. How about a German pancake with raspberry sauce on top?
  17. We have a small one. It's enough to run the deep freezer and fridge if we cycle between them. We originally got it to run air pressure based tools like nail guns when we finished the basement. Whole house generator would be nice but I can't justify it.
  18. Thank you! I'm now trying to find a few of the DVD's in time for next week's party.
  19. Our 4-H club is having their holiday party next week. We usually have pizza, sodas, snacks and a movie. I am struggling to think of a movie that is both appropriate for 4th graders and interesting to high schoolers. Any ideas? Thank you.
  20. This is too late to help you sleep, but as a veteran of the sinus wars I recommend Afrin and Ibuprofin. Afrin shrinks the swollen nasal tissues that it reaches. Ibuprofen shrinks the rest. Afrin can be used up to four nights in a row if you don't use it during the day. After that it becomes physically addictive so you must stop using it. Also hot and spicy soups will loosen the mucous and help you stay hydrated.
  21. Funerals are for the living. I regret not attending my grandmother's funeral. I was a young adult and didn't understand that my attendance was for my Dad. I didn't really have a relationship with my grandmother and so thought I didn't need to go. Go. Just fly on your own and return quickly.
  22. I have a vague memory from looking at town homes and condos in 1991 ish that if the percent of owner-occupied units is below a certain number home insurance rates go up. Your neighbor may be concerned about that. I still think it's not something that individual renters can do anything about.
  23. Your local agricultural extension may have some info for you. The website should have tons.
  24. It really helps with the time problem. When slow cooking you can start dinner in the morning and not worry about it. When time crunched at dinner time you can pressure cook something quickly. An easy favorite Chicken Tortilla Soup. put a cut up chicken in the pot. Cover with water. Add salt. Cook until done. Everyone customizes their own bowl with things like beans, corn, cheese and favorite salsa. Then pour chicken broth over it and add some meat. Top with crumbled tortilla chips.
  25. Actually I was just at B&N last night. They had a great games consultant working. I bought two new games, though they are for 10+. You might want to call your local store and ask when their best games person is working.
