  1. Cleaning the bathroom. I can't walk away from these burgers in the pan, though, anything could happen! So, while I'm standing here...
  2. Yes, this is how some hive members have discovered household or office mates have made questionable searches on computers. Google is watching!
  3. I watched the 1996 version directed by Trevor Nunn, with Helena Bonham Carter as Olivia. With my young kids, no problems. We had a second version from the library, but never got around to it. There are a lot of versions reviewed on imdb.com I've found that website helpful for previews, they have spoilers and a "parent's guide" section (under the Storyline heading) which is way more reliable than my sketchy memory.
  4. What about increasing exposure to foreign languages? It strikes me as something that might add to her day, widen her knowledge base, and can be adjusted for where she is at (perhaps?) A tutor, or Saturday school? Another thought along those lines might be to add some content in Spanish, I've found math, science and history in Spanish, although I think it would be harder to match the content to her level. I don't have any direct accelerated experience, sorry if I'm off base with my suggestions.
  5. Wow! Let me get you some punch and cookies from the table! Where are the rest of you ask with your fancy party tricks?
  6. My library has a nice series of books called "The Constellation (Ursa Minor - for instance)" Each book is a different author. They are shelved in 292.13, so I think that puts them in the folk-tale section.
  7. How long did it get? I was curious about the limit.
  8. That was one of the things that struck me in Jack London's To Build a Fire. Haha, how cool, and cold, would that be?!
  9. We are using K12, and for my own convenience typing it to the SOTW order that my younger is using. For a more advanced reader you might look at some of the Oxford University Press World in Ancient Times books. My library has some, so check there first! I bought a few used, but the time commitment needed want going to work for us.
  10. It sounds like a neat idea. It won't work for us, but I wanted to send you some vibes of encouragement anyway!
  11. At my kids ages the equivalent would be something like: "Nancy, we are looking forward to our family get-together this afternoon! Have you thought about all the things you need to get done before we sit down for a cup of tea? What is your plan for getting the laundry moved along, cleaning off the kitchen counter, and finally taking that pile of outgrown clothes to Goodwill? You don't have to tell ME your plan, so long as you have one, okay? Well, tell new what you are going to do first, at least."
  12. It is pretty subtle, but keep in mind that WWE does progress to where students are doing their own scribing of narrations and paragraph-long dictation (in theory, not exactly in practice in our house). So if you want to replicate WWE on your own, and there is nothing wrong with that, you may want similar long term goals. Or not. Additionally, I think a lot of people rewrite the copywork to whatever properties or font works for them, so you wouldn't be alone there.
  13. I don't think he is doing the smart thing. Is there a procedure for giving "incomplete"? He could do some of the work this semester and then fill in the holes next semester?
  14. I've wondered this too. I'm thinking our level of sugar consumption, or HFCS specifically. Perhaps it will be all the accidents from people driving their own cars.
  15. Secular? Hard to find. You could go more of the mathy route and try problems from Math Kangaroo. They aren't arithmetic, mostly require a logical approach. You can look at a free set (last year's test, I think) on the Canadian Math Kangaroo site. A less mathy approach might be to try a philosophy for kids approach. I did a deep search for logic options last spring for my current 10 yos without finding the perfect thing. I feel for her. Once you understand how the grid problems work and that there is always a unique solution, the novelty is gone. Same for sudoku. Although after sudoku you could show her ken-ken which has an arithmetic and combinatorics spin. You could also look at logic games in general, there have been a few threads on that. If you want religious content there is a book that I can't remember now. Is it Art of Argument?
  16. I cut up a bunch of old t-shirts to use in place of paper towels most of the time. My other idea is to plan it all out. Plan out meals and snacks. At least then you can see where it is a struggle to stock to the plan. If your downfall is the late afternoon snack you can add more of those into your plan, or more filling one's, or soldier one's, or just allocate grocery money for 2 for 1 bags of chips, or whatever works for you.
  17. That would irk me mightily. However, trying to avoid the situation in the future, in a town filled with family and extended family may make for some very uncomfortable, long-term situations. Honestly, it might be less hassle to just move. Barring that, I would try to share less and respond with a comment about how the topic is not something I'm comfortable discussing. Not an ideal response, I realize. Good luck how ever you decide to handle it.
  18. I think so too. I've booked a few times with vrbo and not had an issue, but I've also seen the same properties listed on other sites. I guess my take away will be to email a few sites at once, when I start planning our spring trip!
  19. I agree with Fifiruth. Think of this as your "starter machine" it will always be handy, even after you have outgrown it. You might see if your library has Consumer Reports, this seems right up their alley.
  20. She did a good, good thing by apologizing. I imagine the boy kept crying because it hurt (and perhaps he was embarrassed). I actually think that despite my instinct to try top "make it right", she shouldn't do anything more. If that is too hard, I might put together a get-well card from the entire team. Injury is one of the risks we all accept when we sign the forms with the small print.
  21. Taking a break would be a crisis in our house. My son is still struggling with the shift we made this year moving library day from Tuesday to Thursday. It has been 6 weeks. In fairness, though, the situation is not the same as or library does not have fines. Books from the "fine library" stay quarantined and are returned immediately upon completion. Along with many strident reminders on my part.
  22. Hitting a wall with parabolas - need advice Stand father back.
  23. I in no way begrudge her charging a fee, but I will say that last spring when I wanted to print some lined paper her website was smart enough to make me turn off ad blocker first. Some kind of internet magic.
  24. For the first book I summarize the important things we talked about and then dc draws a picture on the top half of the page. For books 2 and 3 I made up some worksheets of my own to record each lesson. In book 2 they still requested to room to draw a picture, in book 3 we've moved away from that a bit. They have them all in one binder and it is great for going back to review precedent lessons.
