  1. My DH is a high school teacher and this is how the students refer to each other. They are high 5ing and just living it up. It drives my DH batty as all it is going to take is for one Caucasian to use the word and the class will erupt into a riot. With 35 students in a class, it is hard to tell who is saying what. Some days he is just :willy_nilly: dealing with all the different references.
  2. Well, I happily raise my hand and say I am a mean mom. I serve meals (such as you described) and if someone doesn't eat it, they know that another meal will be served at the appropriate time. I have made it abundantly clear that I am not a short order cook. We don't snack here so I'm no help with that question, but if it were me, I would say that since lunch wasn't eaten, no snack. :nopity:
  3. Have you tried to run through some Affresh or some other front loading cleaning stuff? I think Tide makes some now. http://www.tide.com/en-US/product/tide-washing-machine-cleaner.jspx Here is the Affresh - http://www.affresh.com/#/home and one made by Clorox - http://www.clorox.com/products/clorox-washing-machine-cleaner/
  4. We live NW of ATL and the wind was unbelievable. We had a number of schools who opened their gyms so that people living in trailer parks could have a safe place to spend the night. Except for lots of limbs, we came through unscathed. Here is another detailed article about the destruction in Ringold - http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_199938.asp ETA: The damage was so severe in Ringold that the schools have been shut down for Thursday and Friday.
  5. Not particularly, but WWE certainly would. Also, SOTW is broken down into sections that have specific questions in the Activity Guide. When we were really working on comprehension, I would have DS listen to the SOTW CD and stop it at different sections so he only had to answer two or three questions and then continue. At the end of the selection, I would review all the comprehension questions. Going from the part to whole really helped him.
  6. Curriculum is bought by May 1. School year calendar is set as soon as our county releases the official calendar (DH is a PS teacher). Everything is scheduled through HST+. HST+ keeps me accountable and DS on track. I get my materials that need to have the spines cut off and spiral bound off to Staples. All copies are made and organized. Unit studies (by Amanda Bennett) are chosen, copied, and spiral bound. Discovery Streaming content is organized. SOTW supplemental reading is researched so I know what our library carries and then I make sure to organize those books so they go on reserve at least 10 days before we hit a chapter. I am one of those people who do not want to be sitting down on Sunday night trying to plan the next week. It just doesn't work for me. I think it is a hold over from my public school teaching days when we had to hand in lesson plans a month in advance. DS is also very organized and likes to see how things are laid out well in advance.
  7. There are some really cute ones here - http://www.classyannouncements.com/birth-wording-ideas.aspx
  8. We use Knock Out and Muggins by Muggins Math (http://www.mugginsmath.com/). All our son's friends love to play both these games.
  9. Much more rigorous to the point that I'm not even sure some of my IRL friends are even teaching anything (and I don't mean unschooling).
  10. I usually go by Goodwill every Friday morning just to make a quick swing through the books. Today, I found the complete set (all 10 books) of Joy Hakim's A History of Us. I actually squealed when I realized all 10 books were there :001_smile:. When I checked out, the cashier said I look really happy. I told her that the books were used by home schoolers and she charged me the price of a child's paperback instead of the price of an adult paperback. On top of that, it had the sticker color of the week on the spine! So my total investment in that curriculum - drum roll please - $3.75! I just love Goodwill!!1
  11. We are finishing WWE2 now. The evaluation page states "the student should be able to take one long sentence (12-15 words) or two short sentences from dictation, after 2 repetitions." They should also be able to summarize a 5-6 paragraph selection in a two to three sentence narration. My DS could not do those things when we started WWE2, but he is very confident in doing them now. My WWE3 is at Staples being spiral bound so I cannot look at it, but my understanding is that the dictation/narration really ramps up A LOT.
  12. Has anyone ever used the First in Math On Line program? It is a supplemental math program. A friend of mine told me her son uses it as a supplement to his public school math program.
  13. We eat rice daily here. DS is Chinese and loves his rice. We eat sticky white rice as well as a blend of sweet brown rice/sticky rice that I discovered at our local Asian market. We love rice mixed with stir fry vegetables that I get in a can at Aldi. Season with a little sesame oil and :drool5: . Inexpensive and very filling. Rice in chicken broth with vegetables is also a hit. Plain rice with soy sauce is always a hit (but we have to watch DS as he puts WAY too much soy sauce on his rice). He would eat soy sauce by the spoonful if we let him :ack2: .
  14. We took Amtrak from Seattle to San Francisco with a stop over in Portland. It was wonderful.
  15. Drink Zip-Fizz. (http://www.zipfizz.com/) It has really helped me. It tastes great, too.
  16. I spent .99 and used this book - Free Children's Books and Young Adult Books for Kindle: Linked List of Over 1,000 Free Classics For Boys, Girls and Teens (Free Kindle eBooks) [Kindle Edition] Best .99 I've spent in a long time.
  17. I homeschool an only. He has no problems with social interactions as he is involved daily in TKD and three times a week with outside enrichment classes. He doesn't mind being an only and has learned how to use his imagination when playing to have loads of fun. He has even expressed that he wouldn't want a sibling as he enjoys the one-on-one time with us.:001_smile: The benefits that DS gets by being an only are many. He gets to travel around the USA and abroad (something we couldn't afford if there was more than just him). Same goes with private lessons for piano and Mandarin as well as tons of field trips to places near us. If he wants to follow a rabbit trail, it is easily accommodated as I don't have to worry about siblings being bored, etc. The downside: he cannot blame his behavior/actions on anyone except himself. He also gets away with next to nothing as we are right there to see what is going on without the distraction of siblings. He once did something inappropriate and we knew it almost as it was happening. He actually asked us, "Do you know what I'm going to do before I even do it?" Well, son, yes. We have already raised your brother and sister (in their 30s) and have been around the block a time or two. :001_smile:
  18. I live in ATL and my entire house is ceramic tile (except for the steps going upstairs.) I love it. I have a very neutral tan color with tan grout. No worries about spills or accidents from the dog. DS's friends love it because, though they must take off their shoes when in the house, never fret over dirty/wet clothes when playing on the floor. The only thing I would do different next time is add the radiant heat in the floor. We just couldn't afford it when we tiled this house. So we wear slippers inside and things are great. I was born in FL and have lived there off and on my adult life so I became accustomed to an entire house with tile.
  19. :iagree: DS ran into his aunt at Wally World yesterday and when she questioned him about some things, he replied with his usual yes and no ma'am. She even made the compliment about how nice his manners were. I do think so much of it is regional, but I know that DS would have an incredibly difficult time not saying the ma'ams and sirs to someone who found it disrespectful.
  20. I feel fortunate that DH's first job is only 2 miles from home, but his second is 20 miles. I am out a lot with DS for TKD, piano, co-op, etc. Plus, we live in Atlanta and anyone who lives in ATL knows that everything takes at least 30-45 minutes to get to. My heart misses a beat when I wake up to the morning radio stating gas went up 9 cents overnight. But wait - I thought it just went up 6 cents overnight a couple of nights ago :svengo: I drive a Sienna and my last fill - up was yesterday and was just over the $60 mark. :w00t:
  21. :iagree: Same here, It is automatic. DS's TKD studio also stresses it. The students must always respond with a yes ma'am or yes sir or lots of push ups and jumping jacks can result as a consequence for forgetting.
