  1. Hi - my son's is in grade 4. He tracks to NWEP of 231 currently. I have started him on MCT program - level 1 and he's liking it. At school, he's good. Issues I have been told and noticed: He tends to read diligently however when writing down the questions, he tends to write them down as fast as possible, effectively making grammar mistakes, too short sentences or vice versa (run-away sentences) or miss critical details. As I work with him to slow down, I want to engage with him via some work book which will guide him. MCT program has practice island but its different. I also have the Mud Trilogy but currently could not figure out how to use it to achieve the above objective. Now - he'll also appear in SAGES-2 Grade 4 exam next year, June. Keeping that into perspective along with BAU work I wanted to tackle both together. Can someone recommend to me any books/worksheets where reading & comprehension is sufficiently challenging and fits also the things they check as part of SAGES-2 Language Arts tests? Somewhere they recommended Reading Detective 1. Using this as an example - what else can be used? Of course, if this book is good - I'll go for it. Oh : 1 have quite a large # of "Action" magazines (old copies).
  2. *** OLD THREAD! *** I resurrected it to update with what we ended up doing; please do add to it if you have ideas about implementing SOTW4! Original Post begins here: I am using SOTW4 with A, and he really struggles with the comprehension questions. We read the encyclopedia selections first for background, and I have begun reading the SOTW4 activity guide questions to him before we read from SOTW4, but that doesn't make much difference; and to help with the reading itself we did the last assignment as paired reading, alternating reading paragraphs aloud to each other, and while he seemed to understand as we read he did not retain the information for the activity guide questions. When he doesn't know the information, I have him try to find it in the text; if he just can't locate it, I have him read aloud the pertinent paragraph in its entirety and then answer. That ALWAYS works. Is it worth sticking with the questions? Is this "normal" -- as in, just fine from a development and learning perspective? In the past I've adopted a practice of breaking the reading up into very short chunks and having A. narrate them, then expanding the length of sections. Maybe this would be best? it's probably my default next step ... TIA for thoughts! ETA -- this child has always had trouble processing history. It just doesn't make much sense to him, he's a STEM-y kind of guy. This is improving with age and experience :) but the comprehension challenges are pretty much limited to the history domain, in other topics he does what I'd expect.
  3. How can I increase reading fluency and comprehension for a 3rd and 4th grader? I just got their test scores back (Stanford 10), and they were not great in that area.

Hi, We have been homeschooling using a mostly read and narrate approach to comprehension, but due to a long illness, a move, and other circumstances the past couple of years I have not been able to do as much reading with my kids. :sad: I am now realizing they are quite behind in their language/reading skills. I have been considering doing a more workbook approach just because I feel they need some intensified lessons to hopefully catch them up. We will continue to read as a family and narrate as much as possible, but I am looking for recommendations for something they could work on independently every day. I wish I had done this two years ago when life became crazy. :cursing: I feel terrible. Anyway, I am leaning toward CLE or Monarch reading and language arts. Is this a good idea? Will it help? Any other suggestions? :confused1: My kids are 13, 11, and 9. My 11 year old is at least two grade levels behind in reading. I use All About Reading with the younger two so I don't need anything that teaches reading, just something to improve comprehension and thinking skills. I am driving myself crazy looking at different choices. I have even considered dropping all of my WTM pieced-together-curriculum and going to an all in one program. Thanks for your help.
  5. Just had my kids take the Woodcock Johnson as an end of year assessment 1) My fifth grader scored at an eighth grade level for decoding/phonics/word attack. BUT she only scored at a low fifth grade level for reading comprehension. That's not so terrible, but I consider her to be very intelligent and the type of kid that would be in a "gifted" program, and I feel that she should be doing better, especially if her phonics score is so high. Other than "have her read more," does anyone have any suggestions how to address and improve this? 2) My seventh grader scored at a tenth grade level in reading comp and phonics/decoding, and an eleventh grade reading vocabulary. BUT she scored at a fourth grade level in "Reading Fluency" (which is where they have to see how many yes or no questions they can read and answer in 3 minutes -- so it's basically a speed thing.) Again, any suggestions how to bring this up? Thanks!
  6. Just wondering what y'all think about these. A. detests WWE: we are in WWE2; he likes the passages, but hates narration and the questions. He gets narration anyhow via our AO readings (pretty much daily); I'm tempted to drop WWE or at least just the comprehension question bits. But it occurs to me this might be one of those things that turns out, down the road, to have been incredibly useful. Thoughts? Do y'all think the questions are central to WWE-ish goals? :bigear:

I have a friend who is running out of options to help her step-brother (whom she is adopting) in school and will likely pull him out after the school year is complete (must wait on the adoption to finalize). He's an 8th grader now, high school age for the fall, but in most subjects is only performing on a 5th grade level; his reading comprehension isn't up to par for a 2nd grader. She is working on getting some better diagnoses for him, but in the meantime is ready to start looking at homeschooling options and is most concerned about Language Arts. Thinking his main problem revolves around comprehension and vocabulary. Suggestions? Re: My friend isn't super comfortable in thinking she can handle homeschooling. I assured her we could find something she'd be comfortable using. Re: Personally, after talking to her today, I'm thinking something with a lot of repetition is going to work best. He doesn't seem to have a very good working memory, and takes several days to think about things and then comes back to them to ask questions.
  8. Today, my son took the Gesell test for private school admission at their half-day kindergarten. The tester did mention to me that I need to work on his comprehension. She said that I need to ask more questions while reading. Currently, we are reading "The Children's Book of Values" (and discussing), Bible, "Peter Pan" (explaining and discussing), Dinosaur book (reading to him since it is an interest and listening to "Little Bear" and Beatrix Potter books in the car. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do? I am new to all of this. I am just not sure what level of comprehension is acceptable for kindergarten readiness. Resources? Articles? Advice? BTW, the K is a Classical Christian school.
