If you teach in an elementary school, I have a question
math teacher replied to math teacher's topic in The Chat Board
My purpose for the question is -How common is it for one teacher to have this heavy of a load? 28 IEPs Math 3-5 Reading 3-5 Language 5 An extra Friday program that is student interest, but labor intensive We are an "A" school in our state accountability, very data driven, tech heavy. I get to work most mornings around 6. Some days I don't leave until 6:30. I write around 80 progress reports besides report cards every grading period. I have two paras, but they are only there during the part of the day that I have multi grade levels at one time. The paras teach some of the curriculum but I have to prepare it for them all the way down to working out the math problem solving complete with strategies. The prep work and lesson plans are insane. I have one student that i have to pre-work his tests down to computation. I mark out one answer choice on all their tests except benchmarks. And many more things like this. It all takes time, and my principal wants to know why I spend so much time at the school. I guess I'm just looking for validation or commiseration. -

I see 18 students a day, which is not all that many, but it is 3 grade levels for math and reading. I work a lot of weekends and early mornings. -

I think certification is good, but the education classes are a big waste of time. Very little of my college education, which cost an arm and leg, is useful. I let a principal talk me into taking a Sped position, which I am probably now unable to move out of. Sped teachers are pure gold, but this was never my intention. I am now teaching at a school where I teach 3 grade levels of math and reading. I have 18 students, but have the sped paperwork for 30. The amount of time I spend at school is insane. I have all 3 grade levels of math at one time, as well as 2 grades of reading, so two paras help during that time. However, for the problem solving portion of our math curriculum, I have to work the problems out ahead of time for the para. My fifth graders took a 6 weeks test not long ago, and between the four of them missed all but one of the 30 problems. I was planning to have the para work with them on corrections, but she needs the problems worked out, not just an answer key. I have behavior problems out the roof. I call parents, and nothing changes. I send behavior problems to the office and the principal gives them a talking to. Well, let me tell you, talking doesn't help. I really need to keep working, but I'm just about fed up.

Question for those who shred a lot of stuff-do you find your shredder lasts longer if you break up the shredding over several days. Like shred a certain number of pieces per day? I would love to join you all, but it will have to wait til summer.

I would urge you to have allergy testing. When I keep my allergies under control, I do not get sinus infections-honestly have not had one in years.

My word for the year is Restore. Specifics goals are daily devotions, healthy eating, and exercise. I also love the idea of 52 challenges. I work over a lot in my classroom, but some of the challenges could involve my time there. I am putting things in place so that hopefully I won't spend as much time there next year.
