  1. :iagree: I let my kids know when their behavior is VERY important and they have never let me down. Funerals, weddings, adult parties (well not ADULT parties, you know what I mean), nursing homes, etc... I really can take my dc anywhere, even the ones I babysat. But they are far from perfect.
  2. :iagree: Can I just say AMEN!!??  :smilielol5:
  3. We love FIAR here! We love How to Make and Apple pie here too, but our favorite has been Makeway for Ducklings, or maybe Rag Coat, or Papa Piccolo, or Night of the moonjellies, or A Pair of red clogs, or Ping,or Peter rabbit, or, or...... How can we choose just one! We even made a FIAR quilt for each of the girls!
  4. My favorite homeschooling book: Teaching the Trivium by Harvey and Laurie Bluedorn Parenting book- Don't Make Me Count to Three by Ginger Plowman marriage book- Created to be His Helpmeet by Debbie Pearl LOVE these books!
  5. When someone asked me this question- and I only have 4- I said "Yes sir and we really enjoy it! " He turned so red!
  6. Our church did a musical called Acorns to Oaks and it had a really cool Acorns to Oaks song and my children loved it so much, we named ourselves Acorns to Oaks Academy and we have our own theme song... "He's changing this acorn into a mighty oak- He's making me holy, He's teaching me to grow. Learning to trust and obey, I'm getting stronger each day..." and of course there is more, but I don't want to type it all out. :tongue_smilie:
  7. I do not let my dc spend the night away from us. As a compromise for church camp I run sibling camp so I can have my younger dc with me, and the 2 older ones attend all the activities until it is time for sleep, then they come bunk with me. Church camp or not, I have to answer to God for these children He blessed me with and I just "know" that they are not to spend the night away. 90% of molestation happens by someone you trust. :scared:
  8. Do you use the same wheat type for quick breads and yeast bread? I am trying to place my first order on a grain mill and bosch and just wondering what grains I need.
  9. Sonlight has the new preschool core A that has quite a few fairy tales. http://www.sonlight.com/cp-a.html
  10. I would not do SOTW or any other history program for k. Here is what I would do. I would either buy a Sonlight core or go to http://www.homeschoolshare.com and pick 34-36 weeks worth of books to do a unit study on. The units are free, written by homeschool moms- all you would have to do is print the pages. There are lapbooks to go along with some of them also. They have an amazon link right there so you can look to see how much the book is going to cost. Add it up and see if this might work for you.
  11. We school year round. We just finished our year, and will start a new one in May. We also take a break in the fall. In Texas it is really too hot NOT to school in the summer.
  12. When we begin doing foster care (in classes now) we will have to keep ours high and locked.
  13. My favorite bean burritos taste like Taco Bell's. Open a can of ranch style beans and dump into cast iron skillet (for some reason it tastes better if done in cast iron, but I am sure any kind will do). Mash. Add double amount of pintos (already cooked) and mash. Add garlic powder and creole season to taste. add some cheese and let it melt. It is so yummy! Also Chicken and rice casserole: Dump 1 large can of cream of chicken soup, 1 can diced tomatoes, chicken (whole pieces, shredded, cubed, doesn't matter) and 3c water into crockpot. Season to taste. Venus de milo soup place about 1 lb of meat- I use chicken, link sausage, breakfast sausage, haburger meat, steak in small pieces- whatever I have on hand. Add a can (28oz) of crush tomatoes, a 15oz can tomato sauce, 5c water, and a can or bag of mixed vegetables. Cook all day on low, then add rice about a cup 30 minutes before it is time to eat. Serve this with some yummy homemade bread from the bread machine! Sausage stew 1lb sausage with 1c chopped onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 cans kidney beans _or dried and add extra water- 2qts, water with 4-6 chicken bouillon cubes- cook all day- add rice when you get home- let cook 30 minutes. Salsa soup Take a 26oz jar of born and blackbean salsa. Add in 3 chicken or beef bouillon cubes- and 6c water, You can add chicken, hamburger, sausage or leave the meat out if you wish. 14. I buy a bag of chicken leg quarters and boil and debone them. The I freeze the meat into individual bags. I use this in place of chicken breast is most casserole recipes, or for soups, enchiladas, etc... We drink water, tea or sometimes koolaide -rarely though. Hillbilly housewife has a few good tips and recipes. A big pot of pinto beans can go a long ways- beans and rice with cornbread, mash for refried beans for bean burritos. Hunt, we get great organic meat just by hunting- wild hogs, deer, turkey, rabbit, etc.. Make a pot of chicken and rice casserole and then use leftovers for chicken soup. Do not eat much cereal- rare for convenience foods, but I will make a meal and freeze it so when we have one of those days I can still have a quick dinner without the need of a restaurant. We spend about $400 a month, but that includes dog food, cleaning supplies, and extra stuff- that is a Walmart budget, not necessarily a food budget.
  15. We just watched this today. I will have to look for the extras though, because I did not notice them. We do Five in a row too and we just did a Beatrix Potter week before rowing Peter Rabbit. :D I let all my children watch it from the 4yo- 11yo- I am usually pretty picky about what I allow them to see too.
  16. Hey whats wrong with that??? :D Just kidding, but I thought that comment was cute.
  17. I would combine SOTW and MOH with the schedule listed in Paula's archives and throw in some extra books when you can. Easy, less expensive, and did I mention easy? :D My kids are close to yours and this is what I plan on doing.
  18. We use Teaching the Trivium as our main guide. That really fits our educational goals and the way we want our trip to be! ;) I continually refer back to it. http://www.triviumpursuit.com
  19. It has been snowing all day here. We are in the Springtown area and we have about 6 inches of actual snow. The most I have ever seen.
