  1. From the sample I see that they work on learning how to write an argumentive essay, and do writing assignments from the Notgrass. I see in the table of contents that there are other writing assignments. Can anyone tell me more about the types of writing assignments? Are they mostly from Notgrass?
  2. We are using Core 4 and core 100. This is our first Sonlight year, and we really like it.
  3. My son is 14 and he said there is a lot of violence- some graphic. Another thing he mentioned is there is a part when one of the Japanese kidnaps a friend cuts off his friends p*n*s, and puts it into his mouth. They find him that way. You don't know that at first, just that he disappears, they find him later. Then his friend has dreams about it, and wakes up talking about cutting off Japs ____ and doing the same. There is language too. So there is poo in the brownies, but it is realistic, and a good historical account. Sorry for the disorganization, wanted to chime in, but in a hurry.
  4. :iagree: I was really shocked by some of the titles that were here. I live a sheltered life.
  5. Some of us believe that a hand out doesn't help. I know there are the few that work hard and still struggle- but in my life I have seen way too many people being lazy and abusing the system. They can have an expensive phone, cigarettes, and alcohol and drugs, yet are on government assistance. No thank you. I would love to see limits on the kinds of food you can buy on food stamps- the basics and fresh fruit and veggies. No chips, soda, and T bones. Anyways, just my thoughts.
  6. We love our rat. He makes a very good pet. We also have a friend that has 2 female rats, and they LOVE theirs as well. Rats are great pets. I don't think they need to be together all the time, I think sharing playing space, and sleeping in different quarters at night would be ok.
  7. I used and loved it with my first born. It was time consuming though. When it came time to teach the next child, I researched and discovered a program called Reading Made Easy. I LOVE it. I taught all 3 of my girls with it, and 2 other children. It teaches reading without killing the joy. It teaches phonics without memorizing a list of rules. I highly recommend it to everyone, because it is a lesser known program.
  8. My all time favorite learn to read program is Reading Made Easy by Valerie Bendt. She teaches them to read without killing the love of reading. It is wonderful! ;)
  9. NO WAY! I too was a victim. I would even make sure dd locks her room at night, or sleeps with you (on the floor) while he is there. WAY too much can happen, from inappropriate conversation to .......
  10. We have been using WriteShop this year and LOVE it! It is my favorite and I ahve used all the others you mentioned as well! :D
  11. If you scroll down you will see several related threads listed at the bottom of this one. That is where I found them, but I will post all the links here too. http://www.avenuesofthemind.com/historicaltimelines.htm http://www.learningthroughhistory.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=H&Product_Code=HT-04 http://www.winterpromise.net/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=660 http://www.rainbowresource.com/pictures/042770/1279170417-1995031 http://addacentury.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1 Hope this helps!
  12. Thanks! I found several options. :D
  13. Does anyone know where I can buy timeline stickers? Preferably in color? I just want colorful stickers we can put on our timeline to make it easier. Anyone know if these exist?
  14. We have both and use both. We use Fallacy Detective orally as a family, then my son uses Art of Argument on his own. It goes a little deeper. Here are a few other threads discussing the two: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101758 http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=176642 http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101759 http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86987 http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22392
  15. My purchases would be whatever SOTW I needed for that year, and math. For math I bought MM for cheap at the co op, but as someone else mentioned Saxon can be found for cheap. Grammar, language arts would be taught as it comes up naturally, or if I could I would splurge for Advanced Language Lessons that is coming out in the fall. The MP3's on this site a very helpful as well. All of that would keep you at about $100. There are enough free books online, and of course your library that you will be fine there. There are even free unit studies at http://www.homeschoolshare.com and of course you may want to send in a request to the book samritan ministry. They may be able to help fill in the gaps.
  16. We are west of Fort worth- Weatherford area.
  17. We will be. We are using the upper level program for the first time with my 6th and 8th graders, my 3rd grader is using the book c. I am looking forward to the beta testing. zit does not follow our schedule either, but we are just going with it. Edited to add that the daught er who would be testing it is in the 5th grade.
  18. Tried it, it was ok. It is still phonics, no matter how "fun" you try to make it, you are still learning rules. My favorite reading program is "Reading Made Easy" by Valerie Bendt. I have taught 3 of mine, and 4 others to read with this program. LOVE it! It really keeps the love of reading in while teaching the "how".
  19. I do not have time to read all the other replies, but we LOVE Reading Made Easy by Valerie Bendt. She makes it simple and retains the LOVE of reading. Very important to me. It has worked on 3 of my own children and 2 children I tutor using it. No curriculum hopping for me! :001_smile:
  20. I chose to use Writeshop as well. A little more laid out than TWSS, and no dvd's with Andrew that the kids HATED. I am using evel c for my almost 8 year old, and Writeshop 1 for my older children.
